Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.
Ant Control in Arcadia 2159 — local technicians, fixed prices and a written report. Ant treatment starts from $89.
Real, verified feedback from people we've helped — straight from Google.
Local technicians, fixed prices and a written report for every job in Arcadia.
Our Upper North Shore technicians cover Arcadia and the rest of 2159 as a matter of course - it is only about 31.2 km north-west of the city. We cover Arcadia on scheduled runs through the Upper North Shore, and we will give you a firm time rather than a window.
Around Arcadia we are most often working near Fagan Park.
We work under the Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby area here, and Fiddletown, Galston and Middle Dural are all on the same route, which matters when ant problems are moving between adjoining properties. Bush edges keep re-supplying the problem, which is why we treat the boundary rather than only the interior.
Arcadia jobs tend to be houses backing onto a reserve, where the pressure is constant from outside. Let us know which when you ring and we will plan the visit around it.
Wherever you are in 2159, you are inside the area our technicians cover.
The 2159 run is set the day before and you are given an arrival time. Where Fiddletown and Galston fall on the same round, we can usually bring the visit forward.
After heavy rain the opposite happens - flooded nests push colonies up and inside. Both extremes send ants into Arcadia houses for different reasons.
Ant control is colony control. Everything else - sprays, powders, wiping the bench - is managing symptoms, and around Arcadia that is why the same trail comes back every spring.
Many ants get most of their sugar from honeydew - the secretion of aphids and scale insects they actively protect on garden plants. A Arcadia garden with a scale problem is feeding the ant colony that then comes indoors.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

Dull brown, small, and noticeable for the thickness and speed of its trails. Multi-queen nests connect to neighbouring ones, which is how an infestation covers several properties. Repellents make it markedly worse.

Large ants, often active at night, that nest in soil, hollow trees and softened or damp timber. Unlike the notorious overseas species they are rarely a structural pest, but a nest in a wall often points to a leak worth fixing.

An Elite photo of ants emerging from mortar. The route runs through weep holes and cracked joints straight into the wall cavity, which is the usual home for a black house ant colony.

From an Elite job - gel bait set down on a live trail. The ants feed and carry it back to the nest, which is why we ask you not to wipe or spray that trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
Ants entering from the external wall point to a cavity or garden-edge nest. Finding that entry is the first step.
Fine sand pushed up through paving, driveway and slab joints is coastal brown ants underneath, almost without exception.
A nest in a power point or appliance is about warmth. Spraying into electrical fittings is dangerous - tell us and we will treat it the right way.
Winged ants swarming in the warmer months are reproductives on a mating flight. Indoors, that can indicate an established colony within the structure.
Trails in the bathroom point to water in the wall or a slow leak the ants have found.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in lawns and garden beds. Their stings hurt and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.
Supermarket sprays are repellent: ants detect them and walk around them. Professional non-repellent products are not detected, so foragers walk through, pick up the active and carry it back to nest mates.
Bait is only taken if it matches what the colony wants right now. Their preference moves between sugar and protein as the brood changes, so we test and switch baits accordingly.
Results come over days as the bait spreads. Spray the trail the next morning and you have killed the ants that were carrying it home. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We identify the ant and follow trails back to entry points and nests in walls, paving, garden edges and roof spaces.
Before committing, we offer a little of each bait type and let the colony tell us which one it is on.
We run gel along the active trails, window frames and skirting, keeping every placement out of reach of children and animals.
The perimeter gets a non-repellent product - foundation, weep holes, door frames, paths - which intercepts ants before they are inside.
For nests beneath pavers and in lawn edges - typically coastal brown ants - we use granular bait or treat the nest directly.
Written summary, instructions on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty covering the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Mostly sweet liquids and honeydew, with protein demand during brood rearing | Gel bait along the trail, plus non-repellent treatment to weep holes and door frames | Daily detergent wiping of trails - it moves the foraging rather than stopping it |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein rather than sugars | Granular bait with an oil base, spread on paving and at the lawn edge | Boiling water down one hole - there are dozens of other nests |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Insects and nectar outdoors | Direct nest treatment in lawns and garden beds | Digging into the nest by hand and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies wake up and start raising new brood, so protein demand rises | First trails indoors, sand piles reappearing in paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak foraging, mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants, heavy trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outside activity drops away, though nests in warm wall cavities carry on | Ants near heaters, hot water units and in the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
If a trail runs up a shrub rather than into the house, the colony is farming aphids or scale for honeydew. Treating indoors will not stop it; the plant has to be dealt with too.
Fine soil pushed up along paving joints, path edges and garden edging is excavation - there is a nest directly beneath. Around Arcadia that is coastal brown ants more often than not.
Ants in the cavity of a Arcadia house will appear at power points, architraves and ceiling roses - anywhere the cavity opens into the room.
Trails are traced to the colony, not just sprayed where you saw them.
Sweet, protein or oil-based, picked to suit the ant and the point in the season.
Sprays that scatter a colony are avoided entirely in favour of non-repellents the ants deliver themselves.

We cover it on scheduled runs, so a day's notice gets you the best slot. Arcadia sits roughly 31.2 km north-west of the CBD, inside our Upper North Shore run, so we book a time and keep to it.
The bush is a permanent reservoir. Treating inside does little here unless the boundary and the perimeter are dealt with, because re-entry is the real issue.
Homes with sub-floors, roof voids and bush at the boundary - all three get inspected.
We do all of those. A good share of the Arcadia jobs we run are tenanted or strata properties, so the written record comes as standard.
It is, applied properly. We put product into cracks, voids and stations rather than across open surfaces, and we will tell you what to stay off and for how long before we leave.
Most of the time you can carry on as normal. If a particular area needs to be empty we will flag it when we arrive and it is rarely more than a couple of hours.
An hour to two hours covers most jobs. The size of the building and the extent of the problem are what change it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. Call us if activity picks up again and we will arrange the return visit.
Yes. As well as Arcadia we cover Fiddletown, Galston, Middle Dural and Glenorie on the same runs, so a job that crosses a boundary can be handled in one visit.
