Flea Control That Stops the Next Hatch
The fleas biting your ankles are only the adults, and they are the smallest part of the problem. Most of a flea population lives in the carpet, the pet's bed, under furniture and in shaded parts of the yard as eggs, larvae and cocooned pupae. Treating the pet alone, or spraying the carpet once, leaves all of those to keep hatching.
Cat fleas are the dominant flea on both dogs and cats in NSW, and they are the species behind almost every flea call we get in Sydney. Their eggs drop off the animal wherever it sleeps. The larvae hide from light deep in carpet pile and feed on flea droppings, then spin sticky cocoons that shield them from insecticide until a person or pet walks by.
Our treatment combines an adult insecticide with an insect growth regulator, which stops eggs and larvae developing into biting adults. We treat inside and out in one visit, and ask that pets are treated by your vet in the same week so the cycle is broken on the animal and in the home at the same time.

FLEA SPECIES
Which Fleas Turn Up in Sydney
Knowing the flea tells us where it came from. If there are no pets in the house, the source is usually wildlife or rodents.
Cat Flea
By far the most common flea in Sydney homes. Despite the name it lives happily on dogs, cats and possums, and bites people readily when hungry adults emerge in a house.
Dog Flea
Closely related to the cat flea and treated the same way. Studies of NSW pets found cat fleas on dogs far more often, so a dog with fleas usually has cat fleas.
Rat Flea
Carried by rats and mice in roof voids and subfloors. Bites in a home without pets are a reason to check for rodents, because the fleas move to people when rodents die or leave.
Bird Flea
Arrives with pigeons, mynas and other birds nesting in eaves, gutters and roof spaces, then moves indoors once the nest is abandoned. The nest has to go too.
Human Flea
Uncommon in Sydney homes today. It is more likely around older sheds, animal enclosures and places where larger animals have sheltered, and is treated the same way.
Sticktight Flea
Attaches firmly around the eyes, comb and ears of backyard chickens, and sometimes pets. Treating the coop and talking to a vet about the birds is part of the fix.

Find the Source
We ask about pets, wildlife and recent moves, check where animals sleep, and look for signs of rodents or bird nests if there are no pets.

Indoor Treatment
Carpets, rugs, floorboard gaps, under beds and furniture, pet sleeping areas and car-parking spaces pets use are treated.

Growth Regulator
An insect growth regulator is applied with the adult product so eggs and larvae in the carpet cannot mature into biting fleas.

Yard & Subfloor
Shaded soil, under decks, kennels, along fence lines and the subfloor where pets or wildlife rest are treated. Sunny lawn is less important.

Vacuuming Plan & Advice
You get a vacuuming and washing plan for the next two weeks and advice to coordinate with your vet.

Flea Treatment Preparation Checklist
Preparation matters more for fleas than for almost any other pest. Please work through this list.
- Book every dog and cat in for vet-recommended flea treatment the same week
- Vacuum all carpets, rugs, floorboards and couch cushions
- Empty the vacuum bag or canister into a sealed bag in the outside bin
- Wash pet bedding, throw rugs and blankets in hot water
- Pick up toys, shoes and clothes from all floors
- Clear items from under beds so we can treat underneath
- Mow the lawn and move pet kennels and beds off the grass
- Cover fish tanks and move birds, rabbits and reptiles out
- Plan for people and pets to stay out until floors are dry
- Unlock gates and the subfloor so we can reach pet resting spots

Week two
Numbers should drop clearly. Keep vacuuming, keep washing pet bedding, and make sure every pet stays on its vet flea product.

Fleas in Sydney Rentals and Pet-Friendly Homes
Flea calls in Sydney climb from spring into late summer, when warm, humid weather speeds up the life cycle. Flea treatment starts from $89. The fixed price depends on the floor area, how much carpet and rug there is, whether the yard, decks and subfloor need treating, and how heavy the infestation is. We confirm the price and any warranty terms in writing before we start.
Why am I still seeing fleas after treatment?
This is normal for up to a couple of weeks. Pupae in their cocoons are protected from insecticide, so new adults keep emerging after we leave. They land on treated surfaces and die. Keep vacuuming daily to trigger emergence, and call us if bites are not easing after about two weeks.
Do I need to treat my pets at the same time?
Yes. Your pets need a flea product recommended by your vet in the same week as the property treatment. Treating only the house leaves fleas breeding on the animal, and treating only the animal leaves eggs, larvae and pupae in the home. We treat the property, not the pets.
Why do I have fleas when I have no pets?
Fleas can come from a previous tenant's pets, possums in the roof, rats or mice, or birds nesting in the eaves. Cocooned fleas can wait for months in an empty property. We look for the source, because if wildlife or rodents remain, fleas will keep returning.
How should I prepare for a flea treatment?
Vacuum all floors, including under furniture and along edges, then empty the vacuum outside. Wash pet bedding hot, clear items off floors and from under beds, mow the lawn, and book pets in with the vet. Pets and people should be out while treated areas dry.
Can I vacuum after the flea treatment?
Yes, and you should, once surfaces are dry. Vacuuming lifts eggs and larvae and the vibration makes cocooned fleas emerge onto the treated carpet. Vacuum daily for about two weeks and empty the canister or bag outside. Avoid steam cleaning or shampooing carpets for a couple of weeks.
Is flea treatment safe for pets and children?
Yes, when used to label. We use APVMA-registered products and ask that children and pets stay out of treated rooms until surfaces are dry, generally a few hours. Tell us about pet birds, fish, reptiles or rabbits so we can plan around them.
Do I need a flea treatment at the end of a lease?
Many NSW residential leases include a clause about pest treatment where pets were kept, and agents often ask for a receipt. Check your lease. We provide a dated service summary for your records and can combine flea treatment with general pest control.
How long does a flea treatment take?
Most houses and apartments take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on floor area and whether the yard and subfloor are included. You will need to stay out until surfaces are dry, and your technician will confirm the re-entry time before leaving, so plan a short outing with the pets.
Can fleas live in the yard?
Yes, in shaded, moist areas: under decks and houses, beside kennels, along fence lines and in garden beds where pets or wildlife rest. Hot, sunny lawn is much less suitable for larvae. We concentrate yard treatment on the shaded spots where animals actually lie down.
