Feral Pigeon Control That Breaks the Roosting Habit
Feral pigeons descend from domesticated rock doves, and they have kept the rock dove's taste for cliff ledges. In Sydney, the cliffs are balconies, window sills, air conditioner cages, box gutters and warehouse rafters. Pigeons return to a good roost day after day, can breed through much of the year and raise their young in the same spot. Once a flock settles, it doesn't drift away on its own.
The feral pigeon is an introduced species and isn't protected in NSW the way native birds are. That gives more options, but the lasting answer is still physical. Scaring devices stop working once the birds realise they are harmless. What works is removing nests and droppings safely, sanitising the area, and fitting netting, spikes or wire so the ledge can't be used again.

Why one balcony isn't enough
Pigeons pushed off one balcony often move to the next one along. Where a whole facade is affected, a building-wide approach through the owners corporation usually works better.

Feral pigeons are most at home where there are ledges, shelter and food: apartment towers in Parramatta, Chatswood and around the CBD, shopping strips with awnings and takeaway outlets, rail corridors, and industrial areas with warehouses and loading docks in suburbs like Alexandria, Silverwater and Wetherill Park. Older buildings with deep sandstone ledges are popular too.
Even though pigeons aren't protected, exclusion is generally the most effective long-term answer, because removing birds alone leaves the roost open for new ones to move in. If droppings have got into a roof void, ask about pest disinfection, and if spilt feed is drawing rats, see rodent control.

Are feral pigeons protected in NSW?
Feral pigeons are an introduced species and aren't protected the way native birds are under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016. Some native pigeons and doves also live around Sydney and are protected, so we confirm the species before recommending anything.
Is pigeon poo dangerous?
It can be. Dried bird droppings can carry organisms such as Cryptococcus and Chlamydia psittaci, and the main risk is breathing in dust when droppings are disturbed. NSW Health advises wearing a P2 respirator and gloves and dampening droppings before cleaning. Large build-ups are best removed professionally.
Can I pressure wash pigeon droppings off my balcony?
It's best not to. Pressure washers, dry sweeping and leaf blowers throw droppings into the air as dust or spray. Dampen the droppings first, wear gloves and a P2 respirator, scrape and bag them, then clean the surface. For heavy build-ups, have it done professionally.
Why did the fake owl stop working?
Pigeons learn quickly. A decoy owl, hawk or reflector only works while birds believe it is a threat. Once they see it never moves, they ignore it, and some will roost right beside it. Netting, spikes and wire physically stop them landing, which is why they last.
Do I need strata approval for balcony netting?
Often. Netting or spikes fixed to the building's exterior may need owners corporation approval under your scheme's by-laws, especially where they change the appearance or affect common property. Check with your strata manager first. We can supply a written scope, photos and product details for the committee.
Will netting trap pigeons inside?
Not when it is installed properly. Before closing off an area, we check that no birds, eggs or chicks remain, and we check again after installation. If a bird ever gets in through damage to the net, the net needs repairing and the bird needs letting out.
How long does pigeon proofing last?
It depends on the materials, the installation and the conditions on site. Good UV-stabilised netting and stainless steel spikes are made for long outdoor use, and coastal sites need corrosion-resistant fixings. Warranty terms are confirmed in writing with your quote.
Can you get rid of pigeons in a warehouse?
Yes. Warehouse pigeon control usually means netting under the roof trusses, proofing gaps in the building and dealing with open doors and food spills that attract birds. For food businesses, keeping birds out is also part of meeting the Food Standards Code, and we provide written documentation.
Should I stop feeding pigeons?
Yes. Feeding keeps a flock near your building and helps it breed. Spilt pet food, bird seed, overflowing bins and scraps around balconies or loading docks have the same effect. Removing food won't fix a roosting problem on its own, but it makes proofing far more effective.
