Pigeon work is quoted after inspection because it is installation work and depends on access, height and the length of ledge involved. A residential balcony is a small job. Netting a warehouse roof structure or proofing a multi-storey facade requires height access and is priced accordingly. You receive a fixed written quote covering removal, sanitising and proofing before anything starts.
Are pigeons protected in New South Wales?
Feral pigeons are an introduced species and are not protected in the way native birds are, so we have far more scope in how we manage them. Native birds, including ibis, magpies and lorikeets, are protected under the Biodiversity Conservation Act. Because the rules differ, we always confirm the species on site before recommending anything.
Why did the plastic owl and reflective tape stop working?
Because pigeons habituate very quickly. Visual deterrents rely on a bird believing there is a threat, and once nothing bad happens for a week or two the birds simply ignore them. Site-faithful pigeons will nest directly beside a decoy owl. Only physical exclusion - spikes, wire or netting - changes the outcome permanently.
Is the guano dangerous to clean up myself?
We would strongly advise against it. Dried guano releases spores that cause respiratory infections including psittacosis and histoplasmosis, and disturbing it with a broom or blower is the worst thing you can do. Our technicians use appropriate respiratory protection and disposal procedures, then disinfect the area and treat the mites left behind.
Will netting or spikes look bad on my building?
Not when specified properly. Modern UV-stabilised netting is fine gauge and reads as almost invisible from street level, and stainless spikes sit below the sight line on most parapets. For heritage facades and prominent frontages we usually recommend post-and-wire, which is the least visible option. We will talk you through the appearance before you commit.
How long does the proofing last?
Good quality netting and stainless spikes, installed correctly, last ten years or more. What shortens their life is poor fixing, undersized net or the wrong material for a coastal site. We use marine-grade fixings near the coast, and our installation carries a workmanship warranty confirmed in writing with your quote.
