Most spiders around a Sydney home are harmless and even useful. The ones that matter are the redbacks tucked under the barbecue and pool fence, the black house spiders webbing every window frame, and, on the northern and western bushland fringe, funnel-webs sheltering under rockeries, logs and the house itself.
A spider treatment works differently from a cockroach or ant treatment. Spiders do not eat bait, so we rely on removing webs and egg sacs, applying a residual product to the surfaces spiders walk and rest on, and treating the sheltered, damp ground where funnel-webs dig in. Hunting spiders such as huntsmen and white-tails touch treated surfaces less, which is why honest expectations matter.

Two of these warrant real care. The rest are mostly a nuisance, but they are why webs reappear.
Glossy black, 2 to 4 cm, living in silk-lined burrows in cool, sheltered ground under rocks, logs and houses. Males wander in summer and autumn looking for females. A bite is a medical emergency.
The female is black with a red stripe on the back and builds untidy webs in dry, sheltered spots: under outdoor chairs, letterboxes, pot rims, pool fences and sheds. Bites can cause severe pain and need medical advice.
Dark and stocky, with lacy, funnel-shaped webs in window frames, brick gaps and eaves. It is timid, but its webs collect dust and return quickly without treatment.
A slim, dark roaming hunter with a pale tip on the abdomen. It wanders indoors at night hunting other spiders, sometimes into bedding and clothes. Bites are painful but a large study found no ulcers.
Large, flat and fast, living under bark, in wall cavities and behind curtains. Alarming in a car or bedroom, but shy. It hunts rather than webbing, so fewer huntsmen tend to return once the insects they eat are controlled.

If you are not sure what bit you and it was a large black spider, assume funnel-web and call 000. A pest treatment reduces spider numbers; it cannot guarantee a funnel-web will never wander in.

Yes, for web-building spiders such as black house spiders and redbacks, which rest on treated surfaces, and web removal stops egg sacs hatching. It is less reliable for roaming hunters like huntsmen and white-tails, and no spray stops every wandering male funnel-web. Treatment lowers numbers and bite risk; it does not make a yard spider-proof.
Call 000 straight away. Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage as you would for a snake bite, starting over the bite and covering the limb, then splint it and keep the person as still as possible. Antivenom is available, and the Australian Museum notes no deaths since it was introduced.
No. Healthdirect advises against pressure bandages for redback bites, because the venom moves slowly and pressure makes the pain worse. Wash the bite, apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth, and see a doctor or go to hospital if pain is severe or you feel unwell.
The evidence says no. A study of 130 bites where the white-tailed spider was caught and identified, involving Australian Museum researchers, found no ulcers. Bites were painful and often red and itchy. Any wound that worsens should still be seen by a doctor.
Spiders are active year-round, but numbers and sightings rise from spring into autumn. Funnel-web males wander mostly in summer and autumn, especially after rain. Many families book a treatment in late spring, before the warm months when kids and pets spend more time outside.
Yes, when applied to label. Products go on external walls, eaves and specific ground zones, not play areas or pet bedding. Keep children and pets away until treated surfaces are dry, usually a few hours, and your technician confirms the time on the day.
Some new webs are normal. Spiders from neighbouring yards and bushland move in, and they need to contact the treated surface. Most web-builders die after settling on it. If webs keep rebuilding at the same level after a few weeks, call us under the warranty.
Fit door seals and brush strips, keep shoes and clothes off the floor, and check shoes left outside. Move rubbish, timber and pot plants away from walls, wear gloves when gardening, and check the pool with a net before swimming. Ground treatment beside the house helps too.
If one is inside, keep everyone and pets away and call us. Do not try to handle it by hand. The Australian Reptile Park runs a program collecting funnel-webs for antivenom and publishes guidance on safely catching them, but only confident adults should consider it.
