Where Mascot sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Mascot sits about 6.9 km south of the CBD in the Inner South & City Fringe, and postcode 2020 is one we are in most weeks. Our technicians are through Mascot most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
The Mascot addresses we attend cluster around Robey Street Reserve and The Lakes Golf Course. Mascot station is another part of the suburb we are called to often.
Mascot is in the City of Sydney and Bayside area, and we cover Rosebery, Eastlakes and Botany on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your spider problem has come from next door. Terraces, semis and converted blocks share cavities and risers, which is why a single-unit treatment often does not hold on its own.
Most Mascot bookings come in as terraces and semis where the problem has come through a shared wall. Say which one applies when you call 1300 313 373 and the technician will have the right products on the van.
The whole of 2020 is on our regular run.
The 2020 run is set the day before and you are given an arrival time. Where Rosebery and Eastlakes fall on the same round, we can usually bring the visit forward.
We brush down egg sacs as part of every job because leaving them means a hatch into treated ground a few weeks later. Spring is when this matters most.
A Mascot property bordering reserve has continuous pressure from the bush. The treatment is a managed perimeter rather than a one-off, because the supply does not stop.
A spider builds where the food is. A sudden increase in webs around a Mascot house usually means the insect population has risen - outdoor lighting, a flowering garden, standing water after rain - and that is the thing worth changing.
Two of these warrant real care. The rest are mostly a nuisance, but they are why webs reappear.

Glossy black and 2 to 4 cm long. It digs silk-lined burrows in cool, sheltered ground under rocks, logs and houses, and the males wander in summer and autumn to find females. A bite is a medical emergency.

The female is black with a red back stripe and webs untidily in dry sheltered places: under chairs, in letterboxes, beneath pot rims, on pool fences, in sheds. A bite may cause severe pain and warrants medical advice.

This is the dark stocky one with lacy funnel webs in window frames, brickwork gaps and eaves. It avoids people, but the webs collect dust and reappear fast without treatment.

Slim, dark, with a pale spot at the end of the abdomen. A roaming hunter that comes inside at night after other spiders, sometimes into bedding and clothing. Bites are painful but a large study found no ulcers.

Flat, large and fast, under bark and in wall cavities and behind curtains. Alarming to come across indoors or in a car, but harmless in temperament. A hunter rather than a web-builder, so prey control reduces the numbers.

A huntsman found on an Elite exterior inspection in Sydney. We work through eaves, window heads, meter boxes and garden edges before anything is applied.

| Spider | Risk | First aid | Get help |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney funnel-web | Among the most dangerous spiders in the world; the venom acts on the nervous system | Pressure immobilisation bandage, as for a snake bite, and keep the person completely still | Call 000 immediately |
| Mouse spider | Rarely bites, though serious funnel-web-type effects have been recorded | Treat a bite from any big black spider as funnel-web: pressure immobilisation bandage | Call 000 immediately |
| Redback | Pain that often becomes severe, with sweating and feeling unwell; antivenom exists | Do NOT apply a pressure bandage. Clean the area, then use a cold pack wrapped in cloth | Seek medical care if pain is severe or symptoms develop |
| White-tailed spider | Painful with redness and itching; a 130-bite study recorded no ulcers | Wash it and put on a cold pack | See a doctor if symptoms worsen or persist |
| Black house spider, huntsman and others | Usually nothing beyond local pain and swelling | Wash the bite and apply a cold pack | See a doctor if you feel unwell or symptoms persist |
If you are not sure what bit you and it was a large black spider, assume funnel-web and call 000. A pest treatment reduces spider numbers; it cannot guarantee a funnel-web will never wander in.

The Australian Museum records male funnel-webs leaving their burrows mainly through summer and autumn to find females - the period when encounters peak.
More males wander on humid nights following rain, sheltering in shoes left outdoors, laundry on the floor, garages and the gaps beneath doors.
Wandering males fall into backyard pools and can survive for many hours underwater. Always use the skimmer net, never your hand.
You find the Sydney funnel-web between the Central Coast and the Georges River, west to roughly Baulkham Hills, mainly in bushy, sheltered suburbs.
Outside first, because that is where most spiders live and breed.
The walk-round covers eaves, window frames, fencing, rockeries, retaining walls, subfloor vents and the garden edges - with you there to see it.
We brush the eaves, pergola, outdoor furniture and garage clear of webs and egg sacs before treating, which stops a hatch landing in the treatment.
Residual product covers external walls, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes and the spots spiders rest in.
Funnel-web risk brings the ground into scope - the sheltered strip beside the house, rockeries, retaining walls, sleepers and subfloor edges.
Inside the house it is spot treatment where required - corners, skirting, wardrobes - plus dusting of the roof void and subfloor where accessible.
The web-builders that rest on treated walls, eaves and frames: black house spiders, redbacks and garage daddy long-legs.
Huntsmen and white-tails hunt rather than web, so they touch less of the treatment. Controlling their prey is what reduces them over time.
That no wandering male funnel-web crosses the yard on a humid night. Harbourage near the house is reduced, but first aid knowledge and good habits remain important.
Garden orb weavers do no harm even when a web crosses the path. Webs near doors and walkways come down; the others stay and control flying insects.
Simple habits that matter most in funnel-web and redback country.
| Season | What spiders are doing | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Sept to Nov) | Egg sacs open and webbing spreads over eaves and fences | Treat and clear webs before the spiderlings disperse |
| Summer (Dec to Feb) | Male funnel-webs are wandering and redbacks are busy around outdoor furniture | Check pools, shoes and outdoor areas, and keep door seals in good order |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Funnel-webs keep wandering, particularly following rain | Be alert on humid nights and keep the gardening gloves on |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor webs become scarce while huntsmen shelter indoors and in cars | A good window for proofing gaps before spring |
Most spiders found indoors in Mascot homes came in by accident - under a door, through a vent, or on something carried in. They are not establishing; they are lost, which is why door seals do more than spraying skirting boards.
The practical advice for a Mascot family is the dull kind that works: shoes shaken out, gloves for the garden, a pressure immobilisation bandage in the kit, and 000 and 13 11 26 saved in the phone.
Activity climbs through spring and peaks in the warm, humid months. Funnel-web wandering is worst after heavy summer rain, which is also when Mascot households find them indoors.
We name the species we find and explain their significance for your household.
Ground harbourage beside the house, not just the eaves you can see.
Honest about the limits, particularly where wandering funnel-web males are concerned.
Covered for 6 months on a general treatment - if the webs come back, we come back.

Get a Free QuoteSpider treatment starts from $89. Two things move it: how big the place is, and how far it has already spread. We work that out on the phone or on site and tell you the figure before anything starts in Mascot. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
At roughly 6.9 km south of the city, Mascot is on a route we run regularly. Same-day attendance is usually available. You will be given a time, not a window.
The housing stock is old and joined together. A shared wall cavity or a continuous sub-floor lets spiders travel from one property to the next, which is why your neighbour matters.
Terraces, semis and converted blocks, which share structure - so we check what adjoins the property rather than treating it as a standalone building.
Yes. We work in houses, units, strata blocks, rentals and commercial premises across Mascot 2020, and we provide the written report agents and strata managers ask for.
It is, provided the instructions are followed. We will tell you what to keep clear of and for how long before we leave. Let us know about children, pets or fish tanks when you book.
Usually not. Most of the work is done with you in the house, and where a room does need to be clear it is for a short period we will tell you about on arrival.
Usually between one and two hours on site. Bigger properties and heavier infestations take more, and that is included in the quote rather than added afterwards.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. If activity continues past the expected period, call us and we will come back.
We do. Mascot and Rosebery, Eastlakes, Botany and Beaconsfield are all on the same route, which helps if you own more than one property in the area.
