A fly problem is almost always a breeding problem. House flies lay eggs in bins, compost and animal waste; blowflies in anything dead; drain flies in the slimy film lining a floor waste; vinegar flies in the fermenting residue under a bar mat. Spray the adults and a fresh generation hatches from the same spot within days.
So our first job is detective work. The species tells us what the larvae are feeding on, and the pattern of where flies gather points us to the source: a forgotten grease trap, a dead rat in the ceiling, a split bin liner under the sink or a drain nobody has scrubbed. Once the source is found and removed, adult control actually lasts.
For homes, that usually means one visit to find and treat the source and knock down adults. For cafes, restaurants and food manufacturers, it means a program: drain treatment, correctly placed light traps, proofing advice and service records that sit in your food safety file.

Grey with four dark stripes on the thorax. Breeds in moist rotting organic matter such as bin waste, compost and pet or animal droppings, and walks from there straight onto food and benches.
Large, metallic green or blue and loud. Larvae feed on dead animals and meat scraps. A sudden cluster at one window inside often means a dead rodent, bird or possum in the roof or a wall.
The small fly that lands on your face at a summer barbecue. It breeds in animal dung, often well away from your home, so the focus is screens, doors and outdoor comfort rather than a yard treatment.
Small, fuzzy and moth-like, resting on bathroom walls. Larvae live in the gelatinous film inside drains, floor wastes and grease traps. Scrubbing that film away is the real cure.

Standard 3.2.2 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code requires food businesses to take all practicable measures to prevent pests entering the premises, and to eradicate and prevent pest harbourage. It recognises an occasional fly may get in; a breeding population is a different matter.

A sudden cluster of big, shiny flies indoors usually means something has died nearby, often a rat, mouse, bird or possum in the roof void, wall cavity or subfloor. The larvae feed on the carcass and emerge as adults. The carcass has to be found and removed, then the rodent or wildlife problem addressed.
Drain flies breed in the slimy film inside drains, so insect spray on the walls will not stop them. The film needs to be scrubbed out with a stiff drain brush, then treated. Check every floor waste, shower and rarely used sink. Persistent drain flies can mean a broken or leaking pipe.
Very fast in warm weather. House flies can go from egg to adult in about a week to 10 days in summer, and eggs can hatch within hours. That is why flies seem to appear from nowhere during a Sydney heatwave, and why removing the breeding site matters more than spraying adults.
Yes, when they are done properly. We do not spray food preparation surfaces. Residual products go on resting surfaces such as frames, eaves and bin enclosures, drain products go into drains, and light traps are positioned so insects are not caught above food areas. All products are APVMA-registered.
They are a useful part of a program, especially for catching flies that get through doors and for monitoring numbers, but they do not stop breeding. Placement matters: away from food preparation, not competing with bright windows, and serviced regularly. They work best alongside drain cleaning, screens and hygiene.
Bins that are not sealed or washed, compost that is too wet, dog droppings, rotting fruit under trees and grass clippings left in piles are the usual attractants. Bush flies also blow in from surrounding areas in summer. Fixing waste and pet areas has more effect than any spray.
Those are vinegar flies, which breed in fermenting fruit and sugary residue. Throw out overripe fruit, rinse recycling, clean under the kettle and coffee machine, and wash mop heads. In bars and cafes, check drip trays, drink lines and floor wastes under the bar.
Flies that breed in waste and droppings can carry germs onto food and surfaces they land on. That is why food businesses have to control them under the Food Standards Code. At home, cover food, keep bins sealed and clean benches before preparing meals.
