Bed bugs are flat, reddish-brown insects up to about 6 mm long that hide in mattress seams, bed frames, bedside tables and skirting boards, and come out to feed while you sleep. They are not a sign of a dirty home. They travel in luggage, second-hand furniture and clothing, which is why Sydney calls come from new apartments, share houses, hotels and short-stay rentals alike.
They are one of the hardest household pests to clear in a single visit. Eggs are about 1 mm long, glued into crevices and much harder to kill than the adults, and bed bugs can go months between meals. A treatment that looks successful can be undone by eggs hatching a week or two later. That is why every bed bug job we do includes a preparation plan and a planned follow-up.

Use a torch and a card edge. Look before you move anything, so bugs are not spread to other rooms.
Lift the corners and run along the seams, labels and piping. Look for live bugs, pale eggs and pale cast skins.
Clusters of small brown-black spots that smear like ink are bed bug droppings. Tiny blood spots on sheets are another sign.
Check joints, screw holes and the back of the headboard, especially slatted and upholstered bases.

Tell your agent or landlord in writing as soon as you find bed bugs, and do not move furniture out or throw a mattress onto the street, which spreads them. It sounds wrong, but sleeping in the treated bed draws surviving and newly hatched bugs across treated surfaces. Moving out lets them wait.
Take clean clothes from sealed bags as needed. Do not return stored items to drawers until after the follow-up visit.
Some bites in the first couple of weeks are common as eggs hatch. Note the dates and where on the body, so we can judge progress.

Almost always more than one. Eggs are harder to kill than adults, so our program includes a planned follow-up visit timed to catch nymphs that hatch after the first treatment. Heavy infestations, cluttered rooms or bugs that have spread to other rooms can need further visits.
Usually it is not necessary and it rarely solves the problem, because bed bugs also live in the bed frame, furniture and room crevices. Carrying an infested mattress through a building can spread them. If you do dispose of one, wrap it in plastic first and mark it as infested.
It is better not to. Moving to the couch or a spare room often carries bed bugs with you and spreads the infestation. Keep sleeping in your treated bed so bugs come out, cross treated surfaces and die. Your technician will tell you when the room is ready to use.
Bag items in the room before carrying them to the laundry. Healthdirect advises washing in water hotter than 60 degrees and drying on high heat for at least 30 minutes. Keep clean items sealed in fresh bags until the treatment and follow-up are finished.
Healthdirect says bed bugs are not known to spread disease. Bites can be very itchy, scratching can lead to skin infection, and some people react more strongly than others. Rarely, reactions can be severe. See a doctor or pharmacist for advice about bites, especially if they become infected.
Each has a place. Heat kills all stages it reaches, including eggs, and leaves no residue on bedding, but it does not protect against bugs that return later. Residual chemical treatment keeps working in cracks and crevices for longer. We usually combine them, based on what the inspection finds.

Cleanliness makes little difference; they only need a sleeping person to feed on, which is why spotless hotel rooms can have them too.
Check mattress seams, headboards and bedside furniture at every changeover, hot-wash linen and dry on high heat, and consider protective mattress encasements. Keep luggage racks away from beds. If a guest reports bites, block the calendar and book an inspection before the next stay.
