Textile pest treatments start from $89 for a standard home with a fixed quote confirmed before work begins. Pricing depends on how many wardrobes, rooms and storage areas are involved, and whether wool carpet, rugs and upholstery also need treating. Homes with extensive stored textiles or several affected rooms take longer and are quoted on inspection.
How do I tell clothes moths from pantry moths?
By where they are and how they behave. Pantry moths are found in the kitchen, are coppery at the wing tips and fly readily toward lights. Clothes moths are smaller, plain gold, live in wardrobes and dark storage, and tend to run or scuttle rather than fly. They also need completely different treatment, so identifying correctly matters.
Why is only the wool damaged?
Because textile pests digest keratin, the protein in wool, silk, cashmere, feathers and fur. Polyester, nylon and acrylic have no nutritional value to them at all. Blends get damaged in proportion to their natural fibre content. It is the single most useful diagnostic sign, and it is why one shelf can be devastated while the next is fine.
What should I do with the affected clothing?
Launder anything washable at 60 degrees, or dry-clean it, since heat kills every life stage including the eggs. Items that cannot be washed can be sealed in a bag and frozen for a week. Do not put cleaned garments back into an untreated wardrobe, because they will simply be re-infested from the structure itself.
Do mothballs and cedar actually work?
Not really, and it is worth saying plainly. Cedar loses its effectiveness within a year or so and never kills larvae already present. Mothballs only work in a genuinely airtight container at concentrations most people find unpleasant, and they are a poisoning risk around children. Airtight storage of cleaned garments is far more effective than either.
