Roof tiles & ridge caps
Cracked or slipped tiles and crumbling ridge pointing open straight into the roof void. We identify them and seal minor gaps, and recommend a roofer where tiles need replacing or re-pointing.
Physical pest proofing for Sydney homes and businesses: we find and seal the gaps rats, mice, cockroaches and birds use, so pests stay out and treatments last longer.
Real, verified feedback from people we've helped — straight from Google.
Baiting and spraying deal with the pests already inside. Pest proofing deals with the next ones. If a rat can still squeeze under a garage door or through a gap where the air conditioning pipe enters the wall, a new rat will simply replace the one you removed.
Our proofing work starts with a detailed inspection of the building envelope: rooflines, eaves, vents, weep holes, doors and every pipe, cable and conduit that passes through a wall or floor. We look for gnaw marks, rub marks, droppings and runways that show exactly which gaps are in use, then seal them with materials pests can't chew through.
You get a written list of every entry point found, what we sealed, and anything that needs a builder, roofer or electrician.
Rodents can compress their bodies to fit any gap their head fits through, which is why tiny openings matter.
| Pest | Commonly cited entry gap | Typical entry points |
|---|---|---|
| House mouse | Around 6 to 8 mm. Health Victoria notes mice can squeeze into gaps as small as 8 mm, and exclusion guides commonly advise sealing anything over about 6 mm. | Under doors, weep holes, gaps around pipes and cables, garage door corners |
| Rats | Around 12 mm is the commonly quoted size for exclusion work | Roof tiles and ridge caps, broken vents, drain pipes, gaps at slab edges |
| Cockroaches | Very narrow cracks and gaps | Pipe penetrations, cracked tiles, gaps behind splashbacks, door thresholds |
| Possums | Loose tiles, gaps at fascia and eaves, open vents | Rooflines, where trees touch the roof, broken eave linings |
| Birds | Openings at eaves, gutters, roof sheeting and solar panels | Under solar panels, box gutters, ledges, exhaust vents |
| Wasps & bees | Small holes into wall and roof cavities | Weep holes, gaps at window frames, vents |
Gap figures are general guidance and vary with the age and size of the animal. We seal anything that shows signs of use.
Expanding foam and silicone alone won't stop a rodent. We match the material to the gap and the pest.
Stainless or steel wool packed into small gaps and held in place with sealant, so rodents can't pull it out or chew through.
Galvanised or stainless mesh over vents, subfloor openings and larger gaps where airflow must be kept.
Brush strips and door sweeps on external, garage and roller doors to close the gap along the bottom.
Purpose-made guards that keep brick weep holes draining and ventilating while blocking mice, insects and wasps.
Collars and escutcheons around plumbing, gas and air conditioning pipes where they pass through walls.
Mesh under solar panels, spikes and wire on ledges, and netting to close off roosting areas.

Most rodent and possum problems in Sydney homes start at the top of the house.
Cracked or slipped tiles and crumbling ridge pointing open straight into the roof void. We identify them and seal minor gaps, and recommend a roofer where tiles need replacing or re-pointing.
Gaps where eave linings meet the fascia or brickwork, and at the ends of gutters, are favourite rat and possum entries. Overhanging branches give them a bridge to reach these points.
Broken terracotta vents and missing vent covers let rodents into subfloors and wall cavities. They are covered with mesh so ventilation is kept, since subfloors need airflow.
Exhaust fans, flues, skylights and solar panel mounts can leave gaps in roof sheeting. Solar panels in particular create sheltered spaces for pigeons.
Inspection and mapping come first, so every seal goes where pests are actually getting in.
We inspect the roofline, eaves, walls, vents, doors and subfloor, plus the roof void where it's safe to enter.
Each gap is recorded with photos, the pest signs found and the recommended fix.
You receive a fixed price for the proofing we can do, and a list of any trade repairs needed.
Gaps sealed with steel wool and sealant, mesh, brush seals, guards and collars matched to each opening.
Activity is reviewed afterwards, and any new gaps pests try are sealed as part of the follow-up.
The corners at the bottom of garage doors often leave a gap a mouse can use. Brush seals and side seals close them without stopping the door working.
Split system pipes, hot water units and gas lines are often run through a roughly cut hole that is never sealed. We close the gap around the pipe with gnaw-resistant material and a cover plate.
Gaps behind the dishwasher, under the sink and behind the vanity connect to wall cavities. Sealing them helps with both rodents and cockroaches.
Gaps at slab edges, broken subfloor vents and open access hatches let rats into the underfloor space, where they nest out of sight.
Some proofing is an easy weekend job. Some is worth handing over.
| Job | DIY-friendly? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fit a door sweep or brush seal | Yes | Low risk, basic tools, easy to check the result |
| Trim branches away from the roof | Usually | Large trees near power lines need an arborist |
| Seal small gaps inside cupboards | Yes | Use steel wool with sealant for rodent gaps |
| Fit weep hole guards | Yes, at ground level | Make sure guards keep the weep hole open |
| Seal rooflines, eaves and ridge gaps | No | Working at height, and gaps are hard to find without experience |
| Close entries used by possums or birds | No | Protected wildlife may be trapped inside, and NSW rules apply |
| Find where rats are getting in | Rarely | Active entries are identified by rub marks, gnawing and runways |
Walk around your building with this list. Anything you tick is worth a closer look.
Federation and Victorian terraces in Paddington, Glebe and the Inner West have shared roof spaces, old terracotta vents and decades of settling that open gaps. Brick veneer homes across the suburbs rely on weep holes that mice and cockroaches use. Newer homes in the Hills and South West often have gaps around air conditioning and solar installations, and bushland suburbs on the North Shore and Northern Beaches see more possums testing the roofline.
Houses built before 1980 may contain loose-fill asbestos insulation in the roof, which NSW Government says can only be identified by testing, so tell us if your home has been tested or is on the register before any roof work. Pests already inside? Book rodent control first, and after a long infestation ask about pest disinfection.

Get a Free QuotePest proofing, also called exclusion, is sealing the gaps and openings that pests use to get into a building. It includes sealing pipe penetrations, covering vents with mesh, fitting door brush seals and weep hole guards, and closing gaps at rooflines and eaves. It works alongside treatment rather than replacing it.
Smaller than most people expect. Health Victoria says mice can squeeze into gaps as small as 8 mm, and many exclusion guides recommend sealing any gap over about 6 mm. Rats need a little more room, commonly quoted at around 12 mm. Young animals can use even smaller gaps.
Expanding foam on its own isn't a reliable rodent barrier, because rats and mice can chew through it. For rodent gaps we use steel wool or mesh combined with sealant, or metal cover plates. Foam can have a place for insects and draughts, but not as the only barrier.
Weep holes let moisture drain from and air circulate within brick cavity walls, so they should never be filled with mortar or sealant. Purpose-made weep hole guards keep them open while stopping mice, cockroaches and wasps from getting in. We match the guard to the brick and hole size.
Yes, but carefully. Possums are protected native animals in NSW, so we first make sure no possum is still inside the roof before any entry is closed. Removal and release are handled under NSW rules through our possum service, then the entry points are sealed.
Pest proofing is quoted after an inspection, because the price depends on how many entry points there are, their height and access, the materials needed and whether bird proofing or roof work is involved. You get a fixed written quote and a list of any repairs that need another trade.
Usually both, in the right order. Treating first reduces the pests already inside, and proofing stops more coming in. For rodents, sealing every entry while animals are still inside can trap them in the walls, so proofing is timed with the treatment.
You can handle simple jobs like fitting door seals, trimming branches, clearing gutters and sealing small visible gaps. Finding every active entry point, working at height and sealing rooflines safely is where professional help pays off, especially when pests keep returning.
Yes. We install mesh under solar panels, spikes and wire on ledges, and netting to close off roosting and nesting areas, most often for pigeons. Native birds are protected in NSW, so we identify the species before deciding on the approach.
Warranty terms for proofing work depend on the job and are confirmed in writing with your quote. Proofing can be affected by later building work, storm damage or new gaps pests create, so we recommend a check if activity returns.
