Where Oatlands sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Our Greater Parramatta & Cumberland technicians cover Oatlands and the rest of 2117 as a matter of course - it is only about 18.7 km north-west of the city. We run Oatlands on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
Our Oatlands work takes in the streets by Walter Brown Park and Collett Park, through to Rangihou Reserve at the other end.
The suburb sits in the City of Parramatta and Cumberland area. Telopea, Dundas and Kingsdene are all covered on the same day, so a problem that has spread across a boundary can be handled in one visit. Terraces, semis and converted blocks share cavities and risers, which is why a single-unit treatment often does not hold on its own.
Around Oatlands the pattern is fairly consistent: older semis with a paved rear courtyard and a sub-floor that no longer dries out. Tell us which it is on the phone and we will come prepared for it.
Stewart Street Reserve and Dundas station are on the same round, which means every part of 2117 is within our area.
The 2117 run is set the day before and you are given an arrival time. Where Telopea and Dundas fall on the same round, we can usually bring the visit forward.
The Greater Parramatta & Cumberland pattern is a build-up from September, heaviest through January and February, easing by April. Treating before the build-up is far more effective.
We place product where people and animals do not go, and tell you what to keep clear of and for how long - usually a couple of hours on treated surfaces. Mention pets, chickens or fish tanks when booking a Oatlands job.
Funnel-webs live in burrows in moist, shaded ground - garden beds, under rocks, in rockeries and beneath logs. Spraying the eaves of a Oatlands house does nothing about the spider people are actually worried about.
Two of these warrant real care. The rest are mostly a nuisance, but they are why webs reappear.

A 2 to 4 cm glossy black spider that burrows into cool shaded ground - under rocks, logs, houses - lining the burrow with silk. Wandering males appear in summer and autumn, and a bite is a medical emergency.

Black with a red stripe down the back, the female builds a ragged web somewhere dry and sheltered, such as under outdoor furniture, in a letterbox, under a pot rim, on a pool fence or in a shed. Severe pain is possible and medical advice is needed.

Dark, stocky, and responsible for the lacy funnel webs in window frames, brick gaps and eaves. Timid - though the webs gather dust and rebuild rapidly if untreated.

Slim and dark with a pale-tipped abdomen, this one hunts rather than webs. It comes indoors at night after other spiders, sometimes into bedding and clothing. Bites hurt, but a large study found no ulcers.

Large, flat and fast, living under bark, in wall cavities and behind curtains. Alarming in a car or bedroom, but shy. It hunts rather than webbing, so fewer huntsmen tend to return once the insects they eat are controlled.

| Spider | Risk | First aid | Get help |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney funnel-web | Life-threatening venom acting on the nervous system | Use a pressure immobilisation bandage as for snake bite; the person must stay still | Call 000 immediately |
| Mouse spider | Uncommon bites, but some have caused serious effects similar to funnel-web | Treat any bite from a big black spider as a funnel-web bite: pressure immobilisation | Call 000 immediately |
| Redback | Increasingly severe pain, sweating and feeling unwell; antivenom exists | Do NOT apply a pressure bandage. Wash the area, then a cloth-wrapped cold pack | Seek medical care if pain is severe or symptoms develop |
| White-tailed spider | Painful with redness and itching; a 130-bite study recorded no ulcers | Wash it and put on a cold pack | See a doctor if symptoms worsen or persist |
| Black house spider, huntsman and others | Usually local pain and swelling | Wash the area and use a cold pack | See a doctor if you feel unwell or symptoms persist |
If you are not sure what bit you and it was a large black spider, assume funnel-web and call 000. A pest treatment reduces spider numbers; it cannot guarantee a funnel-web will never wander in.

Male funnel-webs abandon their burrows chiefly in summer and autumn to look for females, says the Australian Museum. That is the season people meet them.
More males wander on humid nights following rain, sheltering in shoes left outdoors, laundry on the floor, garages and the gaps beneath doors.
Wandering males end up in pools and can live for many hours under the water. The skimmer net, always - never your hand.
The species ranges from the Central Coast south to the Georges River and west to about Baulkham Hills, favouring bushy sheltered suburbs.
Outside first, because that is where most spiders live and breed.
We walk the property together, going over the eaves, window frames, fencing, rockeries, retaining walls, subfloor vents and the edges of garden beds.
We clear the webs and egg sacs from eaves, pergolas, outdoor furniture and garages so new spiderlings do not emerge into the treated area.
Residual product is applied where spiders actually rest: the external walls, the eaves, window and door frames, and the weep holes.
Where the property carries funnel-web risk, we treat the cool sheltered ground against the house: rockeries, retaining walls, sleepers, subfloor edges.
Inside, corners, skirting and wardrobes get spot treatment only where it is needed, and we dust the roof void and subfloor wherever access allows.

Hunting spiders such as huntsmen and white-tails contact less of the treated area. Reducing their prey is the lever that works over time.
That no wandering male funnel-web will ever cross the yard on a humid night. Treatment reduces harbourage near the house; first aid knowledge and sensible habits still matter.
Those orb weavers across the garden path are harmless. We take down webs by doors and walkways, but leaving some in the garden helps with flying insects.
Simple habits that matter most in funnel-web and redback country.
| Season | What spiders are doing | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Sept to Nov) | Egg sacs are hatching and webs multiply across eaves and fences | Treat and clear the webs before the spiderlings disperse |
| Summer (Dec to Feb) | Male funnel-webs are wandering and redbacks are busy around outdoor furniture | Check pools, shoes and outdoor areas, and keep door seals in good order |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Male funnel-webs are still wandering, particularly after rain | Be careful on humid nights and keep gardening gloves on |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Fewer webs outside, and huntsmen move indoors and into cars | The right time for pest-proofing gaps ahead of spring |
Indoor sightings are usually a proofing issue rather than an infestation. Gaps under doors, unscreened vents and wall penetrations account for most of what we find inside.
The practical advice for a Oatlands family is the dull kind that works: shoes shaken out, gloves for the garden, a pressure immobilisation bandage in the kit, and 000 and 13 11 26 saved in the phone.
Funnel-webs regularly end up in pools and survive hours underwater. Do not assume one floating in a Oatlands pool is dead.
We tell you what we found and what each species means for the people living there.
Beyond the eaves: the ground harbourage alongside the house is treated as well.

Get a Free QuoteSpider treatment starts from $89. Two things move it: how big the place is, and how far it has already spread. We work that out on the phone or on site and tell you the figure before anything starts in Oatlands. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. Oatlands sits roughly 18.7 km north-west of the CBD, inside our Greater Parramatta & Cumberland run, so we book a time and keep to it.
Terraces and semis share walls, roof voids and sub-floors, so spiders move between houses without ever going outside. That is the single biggest factor here.
Mostly terrace and semi. We look at the party wall, the sub-floor and the roof space, because those are the routes between houses.
Yes. We work in houses, units, strata blocks, rentals and commercial premises across Oatlands 2117, and we provide the written report agents and strata managers ask for.
It is, provided the instructions are followed. We will tell you what to keep clear of and for how long before we leave. Let us know about children, pets or fish tanks when you book.
In the great majority of jobs, no. If one area needs to be left for an hour or two we say so before we start rather than after.
Allow an hour to two hours for most properties. A bigger building, or one where the problem has spread, takes longer - and we would rather tell you that when quoting than rush it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. So if they turn up again within the warranty, ring us and we will attend.
We do. Oatlands and Telopea, Dundas, Kingsdene and North Parramatta are all on the same route, which helps if you own more than one property in the area.
