Where Whalan sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Whalan is part of the Blacktown & Mount Druitt, 39 km or so west of the GPO, and 2770 is a postcode we know well. We cover Whalan on scheduled runs through the Blacktown & Mount Druitt, and we will give you a firm time rather than a window.
A good share of our Whalan work is in the streets around Westfield Mt Druitt and Bloxham Park.
The suburb sits in the Blacktown City area. Emerton, Tregear and Mount Druitt are all covered on the same day, so a problem that has spread across a boundary can be handled in one visit. Estate blocks are compact with narrow side passages, so access and the perimeter are where most of the work happens.
Whalan jobs tend to be newer homes on small blocks where next door has the same problem. Let us know which when you ring and we will plan the visit around it.
All of 2770 falls inside the area we service.
You get a confirmed time, not a window. We plan the 2770 run the day before, and if Emerton or Tregear is on the same round there is often an earlier slot going.
A silk-lined hole in damp shaded soil needs care, not a shovel. Around Whalan we treat ground harbourage specifically rather than assuming a perimeter spray covers it.
Heavy rain pushes ground-dwelling spiders up and into garages, laundries and under-house areas around Whalan. That is when the calls spike.
Redbacks want dry, sheltered, undisturbed spots - the underside of outdoor furniture, pot rims, letterboxes, the shed, the meter box. Around Whalan that is where we concentrate rather than on the house walls.
Two of these warrant real care. The rest are mostly a nuisance, but they are why webs reappear.

A 2 to 4 cm glossy black spider that burrows into cool shaded ground - under rocks, logs, houses - lining the burrow with silk. Wandering males appear in summer and autumn, and a bite is a medical emergency.

The female is black with a red stripe on the back and builds untidy webs in dry, sheltered spots: under outdoor chairs, letterboxes, pot rims, pool fences and sheds. Bites can cause severe pain and need medical advice.

This is the dark stocky one with lacy funnel webs in window frames, brickwork gaps and eaves. It avoids people, but the webs collect dust and reappear fast without treatment.

A slender dark roaming hunter, pale at the tip of the abdomen. Active indoors at night hunting other spiders, sometimes in bedding and clothes. Bites hurt; a large study found no ulceration.

Flat, large and fast, under bark and in wall cavities and behind curtains. Alarming to come across indoors or in a car, but harmless in temperament. A hunter rather than a web-builder, so prey control reduces the numbers.

| Spider | Risk | First aid | Get help |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney funnel-web | Potentially life-threatening venom that acts on the nervous system | Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage as for a snake bite, keep the person still | Call 000 immediately |
| Mouse spider | Uncommon bites, but some have caused serious effects similar to funnel-web | Treat any bite from a big black spider as a funnel-web bite: pressure immobilisation | Call 000 immediately |
| Redback | Pain that can turn severe, with sweating and general illness; antivenom exists | Do NOT apply a pressure bandage. Wash the bite, then apply a cold pack in cloth | Seek medical care if pain is severe or symptoms develop |
| White-tailed spider | Painful bite, redness and itch; no ulcers in a study of 130 confirmed bites | Wash the area and use a cold pack | See a doctor if symptoms worsen or persist |
| Black house spider, huntsman and others | Normally local pain with some swelling | Wash it and apply a cold pack | See a doctor if you feel unwell or symptoms persist |
If you are not sure what bit you and it was a large black spider, assume funnel-web and call 000. A pest treatment reduces spider numbers; it cannot guarantee a funnel-web will never wander in.

Per the Australian Museum, it is summer and autumn when male funnel-webs leave the burrow in search of females, and that is when most people come across one.
Humid nights after rain bring more wandering males. They shelter in shoes left outside, laundry on the floor, garages and gaps under doors.
They fall into pools while wandering and survive hours underwater. Use the skimmer net and never reach in with your hand.
Central Coast in the north, the Georges River in the south, and west to roughly Baulkham Hills - mostly bushy, sheltered suburbs.
Outside first, because that is where most spiders live and breed.
Walking the property with you, we check eaves, window frames, fences, rockeries, retaining walls, subfloor vents and garden margins.
We clear the webs and egg sacs from eaves, pergolas, outdoor furniture and garages so new spiderlings do not emerge into the treated area.
Residual product is applied where spiders actually rest: the external walls, the eaves, window and door frames, and the weep holes.
If funnel-webs are a risk on the property, the sheltered ground beside the house gets treated - rockeries, retaining walls, sleepers, subfloor edges.
Corners, skirting boards and wardrobes get spot treatment if required, and the roof void and subfloor are dusted where accessible.
Web builders settling onto the surfaces we treat: black house spiders, redbacks and daddy long-legs in the garage.
The hunting species - huntsmen, white-tails - cross fewer treated surfaces. Controlling what they eat is what lowers their numbers gradually.
Nobody can promise a wandering male funnel-web will never cross the yard on a humid night. Treatment reduces harbourage near the house - first aid and sensible habits do the rest.
Garden orb weavers stringing webs over paths are harmless. We clear the ones near doors and walkways and leave others, which helps control flying insects.
Simple habits that matter most in funnel-web and redback country.
| Season | What spiders are doing | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Sept to Nov) | Egg sacs open and web numbers climb on eaves and fences | Treat early and remove webs before the young scatter |
| Summer (Dec to Feb) | Funnel-web males on the move, redbacks active around outdoor seating | Check the pool and shoes, look over outdoor areas, maintain door seals |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Funnel-web males are still on the move, especially after wet weather | Stay alert on humid nights and keep gloves on in the garden |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor web activity falls and huntsmen come indoors and into cars | Good timing to seal gaps ahead of spring |
We go through the specific risks on a Whalan property with you - where redbacks are likely, whether the block is in funnel-web country - so the advice fits the house rather than being general.
Sheds, cubby houses and under-deck storage are the places people forget and the places spiders prefer.
We treat the fence line and the first few metres of garden on a bush-backed Whalan block, because that is the crossing point.
We tell you what we found and what each species means for the people living there.
We treat the ground harbourage beside the house as well as the eaves.
Clear, honest advice on the limits of treatment, including wandering males.
General spider treatments come with 6 months of cover, and webs returning means we do too.

We cover it on scheduled runs, so a day's notice gets you the best slot. We are about 39 km west of the city here, and Whalan is covered by the Blacktown & Mount Druitt team.
The ground here was cleared and rebuilt recently, which displaced whatever lived in it, and the blocks are close enough that spiders move between them along the fence lines.
Modern detached homes on compact lots, usually slab on ground, so the perimeter and the entry points do most of the work.

Usually between one and two hours on site. Bigger properties and heavier infestations take more, and that is included in the quote rather than added afterwards.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. That is the point of the warranty - you do not pay twice for the same problem.
