Budding splits the colony
Where a species has many queens, a repellent spray causes budding rather than death. Part of the colony, queen included, moves elsewhere, and you have doubled the problem.

What we cover in Berrilee, and how quickly we can get there.
Postcode 2159 covers Berrilee and the streets immediately around it. At about 30 km north of the CBD it falls in the Upper North Shore, where we have vans out daily. We cover Berrilee on scheduled runs through the Upper North Shore, and we will give you a firm time rather than a window.
Berowra Marketplace is the part of Berrilee we attend most often.
Berrilee is in the Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby area, and we cover Berowra Waters, Berowra Heights and Fiddletown on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your ant problem has come from next door. With bushland close by there is constant pressure from outside, so the perimeter and the fence line get as much attention as the house.
Most Berrilee bookings come in as properties where the fence line matters as much as the kitchen. Say which one applies when you call 1300 313 373 and the technician will have the right products on the van.
The whole of 2159 is on our regular run.
Bookings for 2159 are confirmed the day before with a set arrival time, not an all-day window. Jobs at Berowra Waters and Berowra Heights often share the same run, which is how earlier slots come up.
Many ants get most of their sugar from honeydew - the secretion of aphids and scale insects they actively protect on garden plants. A Berrilee garden with a scale problem is feeding the ant colony that then comes indoors.
In a dry spell ants move indoors looking for moisture, which is why a spotless Berrilee kitchen still gets trails in January. The sink, the pet bowl and the shower recess are the attractions.
The reason the trail returns to the same spot in a Berrilee kitchen is that it is marked chemically. Wiping it buys hours. Treating the colony that maintains it is the only thing that ends it.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

Dull brown, small, and noticeable for the thickness and speed of its trails. Multi-queen nests connect to neighbouring ones, which is how an infestation covers several properties. Repellents make it markedly worse.

Large and mostly nocturnal, nesting in soil, hollow trees and damp or softened timber. They rarely damage structure here, though a nest inside a wall is a reliable sign of moisture that needs attention.

Photo from an Elite job: an ant nest emerging from a mortar joint. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead straight into the wall cavity, which is where many black house ant colonies live.

Photo from an Elite job: gel bait placed along an active trail. The ants are left to feed and carry the bait home, so we ask customers not to wipe or spray the trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
When they come in from the outside wall, the nest is usually in the cavity or just outside in the garden. We work back from the entry point.
Fine sand pushed up through paving, driveway and slab joints is coastal brown ants underneath, almost without exception.
Warmth is what draws them into switches and electrical fittings. Never spray into a power point - tell us instead and we will treat it safely.
Winged ants swarming in the warmer months are reproductives on a mating flight. Indoors, that can indicate an established colony within the structure.
When trails appear around the shower, vanity or toilet, moisture is the reason - often a slow leak the colony is drinking from.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in lawns and garden beds. Their stings hurt and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

The difference matters. Retail sprays are repellent - ants sense them and avoid the treated area. Non-repellent products cannot be detected, so foragers cross them, pick up the active and take it back to the nest.
Ants will ignore bait that does not suit their current needs. Because they alternate between sugar and protein depending on the brood, we test preference rather than assume.
Give it days, not hours. Bait has to be carried through the colony, and spraying the trail afterwards destroys the couriers doing that work. Our blog covers budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Identification comes first. Then we trace the trails to the entry points and the nests themselves, whether those are in walls, paving, garden edges or the roof.
Before committing, we offer a little of each bait type and let the colony tell us which one it is on.
Indoor placements are gel on the trail - skirting, window frames, travel routes - sited away from children and pets.
A non-repellent treatment around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths intercepts ants coming in.
Granular bait, or direct nest treatment, for the coastal brown ant nests under paving and at lawn edges.
Written summary, instructions on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty covering the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugary liquids and honeydew, plus protein when raising brood | Sweet gel bait on trails, non-repellent perimeter at weep holes and frames | Wiping trails with detergent daily, which keeps the colony foraging elsewhere |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein | Granular oil-based bait across the paving and along lawn edges | Treating one sand pile with boiling water or insecticide when there are dozens more |
| Argentine ant | Chiefly sugars, with protein at intervals | Slow-release baits plus a non-repellent treatment along the property line | Repellent sprays at the boundary, which make a multi-queen colony bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Nocturnal, on sweet foods and insects | Trails inspected at night, bait placed near the nest, timber moisture fixed | Only ever treating during the day, when there is nothing to see |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | The colony restarts and begins brood production, raising its protein needs | First trails inside, and sandy soil showing up in paving joints |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak activity, with swarming flights triggered by warm humid conditions | Flying ants, and trails that thicken noticeably after storms and heat |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Full colony size, and foraging to build stores before it cools | Pantry trails, and ants on the pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Quiet outside, but colonies in warm wall cavities keep working | Ants around the heater, the hot water unit and the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Honeydew is a sugar supply the colony will defend. We point out the plant on a Berrilee job because otherwise the trail simply re-establishes.
Brick cavities are dry, warm and undisturbed, which makes them ideal nesting. The weep hole is the doorway and it is usually where we start on a Berrilee job.
After sustained rain in Berrilee we get a run of calls, and the cause is consistent: shallow nests waterlogged, the colony moved into a wall cavity or subfloor to dry out.
The trail gets traced to its source. Spraying where you saw ants achieves very little.
Sweet, protein or oil-based, picked to suit the ant and the point in the season.
We use non-repellents the foragers carry back, not sprays that split the colony up.
General treatments come with 6 months. Ants back within that window means we come back too.
