Budding splits the colony
A repellent does not kill a multi-queen colony, it divides it. A queen and several hundred workers shift to a new site, leaving you with two nests instead of one.

We treat ants right across 2041. Birchgrove is roughly 3.2 km north-west of the city, which puts it well inside the Inner West run our technicians work. Our technicians are through Birchgrove most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
Around Birchgrove we work the pockets near Greenwich Baths, Birkenhead Point Outlet Centre and Ballast Point Reserve most often, so the van is rarely far away when a job comes in.
Under Inner West, Burwood, Strathfield and Canada Bay, we cover Birchgrove and Balmain, Balmain East and Woolwich alike. The building stock is close-packed, so we look at what the property adjoins before deciding where product goes.
Most Birchgrove bookings come in as older semis with a paved rear courtyard and a sub-floor that no longer dries out. Say which one applies when you call 1300 313 373 and the technician will have the right products on the van.
Wherever you are in 2041, you are inside the area our technicians cover.
The 2041 run is set the day before and you are given an arrival time. Where Balmain and Balmain East fall on the same round, we can usually bring the visit forward.
Ant control is colony control. Everything else - sprays, powders, wiping the bench - is managing symptoms, and around Birchgrove that is why the same trail comes back every spring.
Some species excavate soft, damp timber rather than eat it. Finding them in a Birchgrove window frame or bathroom wall usually means moisture has been getting into that timber for a while.
People assume a trail means something was left out. Around Birchgrove it is just as likely to be the bathroom, because water is the scarcer resource in summer.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

The small glossy black one you find in the kitchen. It runs along skirtings, window frames and cabling, nesting in wall cavities, roof voids and the edges of garden beds, and it takes sweet bait without much persuading.

Minute brown ants with larger-headed soldiers among them. Fine sand in paving joints, at slab edges and in grout is the tell. Because a colony holds many nests, oil-based granular baits are the right approach.

Fast-moving, small and dull brown, in thick trails. Its nests are multi-queen and interconnected with neighbouring nests, so it spreads across properties - and repellent sprays accelerate exactly that.

Large ants that come out at night and nest in soil, hollow trees or damp timber. Unlike the overseas carpenter ants they seldom threaten structure - but a nest in a wall tells you there is moisture there.

Photo from an Elite job: an ant nest emerging from a mortar joint. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead straight into the wall cavity, which is where many black house ant colonies live.

An Elite photo of gel bait on an active trail. The whole point is letting them feed and take it home, so the trail must be left alone once we have treated it.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
Ants entering from the external wall point to a cavity or garden-edge nest. Finding that entry is the first step.
If fine soil keeps appearing in the paving joints and along the drive, coastal brown ants are nesting beneath it.
Electrical fittings and switches stay warm, which is why ants nest in them. Do not spray into them; let us know and we will handle it properly.
Mating flights produce the winged swarms you see in spring and summer. Finding them indoors suggests a mature colony inside rather than outside.
Trails around the shower, vanity or toilet often mean moisture in the wall or a colony drinking from a slow leak.
Bull and jumper ants live in lawn and garden-bed nests. The sting hurts, and for some people it brings on a serious allergic reaction.

A repellent does not kill a multi-queen colony, it divides it. A queen and several hundred workers shift to a new site, leaving you with two nests instead of one.
The difference matters. Retail sprays are repellent - ants sense them and avoid the treated area. Non-repellent products cannot be detected, so foragers cross them, pick up the active and take it back to the nest.
Ants will ignore bait that does not suit their current needs. Because they alternate between sugar and protein depending on the brood, we test preference rather than assume.
A bait program works over days. The worst thing you can do is spray the trail once we have gone - those ants are the delivery system. See our blog on budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
First the species, then the trails - followed back to where they enter and to nests in the wall, under paving, at garden edges or in the roof space.
Before committing, we offer a little of each bait type and let the colony tell us which one it is on.
Gel bait goes along trails, window frames and skirting where ants travel, out of reach of children and pets.
The perimeter gets a non-repellent product - foundation, weep holes, door frames, paths - which intercepts ants before they are inside.
Under-paver and lawn-edge nests are handled with granular bait, or treated directly where that is better.
The job ends with a written summary, advice on what to avoid spraying, and a 6-month warranty.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sweet liquids and honeydew; protein while the colony is raising young | Gel bait placed on trails, non-repellent applied at weep holes and window frames | Wiping trails clean daily, so the colony simply forages on a different route |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oils | Oil-based granular bait on paving and lawn edges | Pouring boiling water or insecticide into one pile while dozens of nests remain |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, foraging after dark | Inspecting trails at night, baiting close to the nest, and fixing damp timber | Working only in daylight hours, when these ants are not out |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects, outdoors | Treating the nest directly where it sits in lawn or garden bed | Digging the nest out by hand, which is how people get stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak foraging, mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants, heavy trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Little happening outdoors, but a nest in a heated wall stays active | Activity around heaters, the hot water unit and kitchen areas |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
If a trail runs up a shrub rather than into the house, the colony is farming aphids or scale for honeydew. Treating indoors will not stop it; the plant has to be dealt with too.
We are around Greenwich Baths most weeks and cover every street in 2041, including the ones off the main roads.
After sustained rain in Birchgrove we get a run of calls, and the cause is consistent: shallow nests waterlogged, the colony moved into a wall cavity or subfloor to dry out.
Trails lead somewhere, so we follow them to the colony instead of spraying the sighting.
Baits are matched to the species and the season rather than used as a default.
Non-repellent products only - they are taken back to the nest rather than scattering it.
Six months of warranty on a general ant treatment, and a return visit if they come back inside it.

Terraces and semis share walls, roof voids and sub-floors, so ants move between houses without ever going outside. That is the single biggest factor here.
Older joined housing. The treatment takes account of shared walls, continuous sub-floors and roof voids that run between properties.
