Budding splits the colony
A repellent does not kill a multi-queen colony, it divides it. A queen and several hundred workers shift to a new site, leaving you with two nests instead of one.

Where Cabramatta sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Our South West Sydney technicians cover Cabramatta and the rest of 2166 as a matter of course - it is only about 25.2 km west of the city. We cover Cabramatta on scheduled runs through the South West Sydney, and we will give you a firm time rather than a window.
Around Cabramatta we work the pockets near BKK Shopping Centre, Cabramatta Plaza and Cabramatta station most often, so the van is rarely far away when a job comes in.
The suburb sits in the Liverpool, Fairfield and Cumberland area. Canley Vale, Canley Heights and Warwick Farm are all covered on the same day, so a problem that has spread across a boundary can be handled in one visit. On a newer estate the houses are near-identical and tightly spaced, which means a problem in one tends to turn up in the ones either side.
Around Cabramatta the pattern is fairly consistent: newer homes on small blocks where next door has the same problem. Tell us which it is on the phone and we will come prepared for it.
Beyond that we are regularly around Canley Vale station, and out as far as Cabravale Park. If you are anywhere in 2166, you are inside the area we run.
We confirm your slot the day before and arrive at a stated time. Canley Vale and Canley Heights sit on the same run, so earlier appointments in 2166 come up regularly.
After heavy rain the opposite happens - flooded nests push colonies up and inside. Both extremes send ants into Cabramatta houses for different reasons.
People expect a single nest. Coastal brown ants and Argentine ants run dozens of connected nests across a property and beyond it, so the question is never just where it is but how far it goes.
Many ants get most of their sugar from honeydew - the secretion of aphids and scale insects they actively protect on garden plants. A Cabramatta garden with a scale problem is feeding the ant colony that then comes indoors.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

The small glossy black one you find in the kitchen. It runs along skirtings, window frames and cabling, nesting in wall cavities, roof voids and the edges of garden beds, and it takes sweet bait without much persuading.

Tiny and brown, with a distinct large-headed soldier. The sign is loose sand appearing between pavers, along the slab edge and in grout lines. Many nests to a colony, which is why we use oil-based granular baits.

Small and flat brown in colour, running in dense fast trails. Because nests hold many queens and join with those next door, the infestation is usually bigger than one property. Never spray a repellent on it.

Large ants that come out at night and nest in soil, hollow trees or damp timber. Unlike the overseas carpenter ants they seldom threaten structure - but a nest in a wall tells you there is moisture there.

An Elite job photo showing a nest in masonry. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead into the wall cavity - the spot black house ants most often choose.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
Ants arriving from the outside wall usually nest in the cavity or garden edge. The entry point is where we start tracing.
If fine soil keeps appearing in the paving joints and along the drive, coastal brown ants are nesting beneath it.
A nest in a power point or appliance is about warmth. Spraying into electrical fittings is dangerous - tell us and we will treat it the right way.
Swarms of winged ants in spring and summer are mating flights. Seen indoors, they can mean a mature colony inside the building.
When trails appear around the shower, vanity or toilet, moisture is the reason - often a slow leak the colony is drinking from.
Lawns and garden beds are where bull ants and jumper ants nest. Their stings are painful and can trigger severe allergic reactions.

A repellent does not kill a multi-queen colony, it divides it. A queen and several hundred workers shift to a new site, leaving you with two nests instead of one.
Supermarket sprays are repellent: ants detect them and walk around them. Professional non-repellent products are not detected, so foragers walk through, pick up the active and carry it back to nest mates.
A colony's appetite shifts between sugar and protein with the brood cycle. Bait only works when it matches, which is why we test preferences on site.
A bait program works over days. The worst thing you can do is spray the trail once we have gone - those ants are the delivery system. See our blog on budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Identification comes first. Then we trace the trails to the entry points and the nests themselves, whether those are in walls, paving, garden edges or the roof.
Sweet, protein and oil-based baits are offered in small amounts so the colony shows us its current preference.
Inside, gel bait follows the trails: window frames, skirting, the routes they already use, always placed where children and pets cannot get to it.
Outside, a non-repellent goes around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths, so ants coming in pick it up on the way.
Coastal brown ant nests under paving and along lawn edges get granular bait or direct treatment.
The job ends with a written summary, advice on what to avoid spraying, and a 6-month warranty.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugars and honeydew, turning to protein while brood is being raised | Sweet gel on the trails themselves, with a non-repellent at weep holes and frames | Cleaning the trail off every day, which just sends them foraging somewhere else |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oily foods | Oil-based granular bait over paving and lawn margins | Attacking a single visible nest while the rest of the colony's nests carry on |
| Argentine ant | Sugar for the most part, with periodic protein demand | Slow baits and a non-repellent applied along the property line | Using a repellent barrier spray - it divides the multi-queen colony |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, mostly at night | Night-time trail inspection, bait near the nest, fix moisture in timber | Treating only in daylight when the ants are not active |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Outdoor feeders on insects and nectar | Direct treatment of the nest in the lawn or garden bed | Opening the nest up by hand and being stung for it |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies wake up and start raising new brood, so protein demand rises | First trails indoors, sand piles reappearing in paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak foraging, mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants, heavy trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | The colony is at its largest and laying in stores before winter | Trails running into pantries and to pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor foraging slows right down while nests in heated walls continue | Ants showing up by heaters, hot water services and in kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
A single trail across a Cabramatta prep bench during an inspection is enough to cause a problem. The program is built to prevent that rather than react to it.
A column of ants going in and out of a weep hole means they are nesting in the cavity, not the garden. Treating the garden bed in that case does nothing at all for a Cabramatta home.
If a trail runs up a shrub rather than into the house, the colony is farming aphids or scale for honeydew. Treating indoors will not stop it; the plant has to be dealt with too.
Trails lead somewhere, so we follow them to the colony instead of spraying the sighting.
Baits are matched to the species and the season rather than used as a default.
Nothing repellent, because that causes budding. Non-repellent products get carried home instead.
