Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

What we cover in Camperdown, and how quickly we can get there.
Camperdown sits about 3.8 km south-west of the CBD in the Inner West, and postcode 2050 is one we are in most weeks. Our technicians are through Camperdown most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
Around Camperdown we work the pockets near Newtown station, Camperdown Park and University Sports & Aquatic Centre most often, so the van is rarely far away when a job comes in.
The suburb sits in the Inner West, Burwood, Strathfield and Canada Bay area. Forest Lodge, Newtown and Annandale are all covered on the same day, so a problem that has spread across a boundary can be handled in one visit. Terraces, semis and converted blocks share cavities and risers, which is why a single-unit treatment often does not hold on its own.
Around Camperdown the pattern is fairly consistent: terraces and semis where the problem has come through a shared wall. Tell us which it is on the phone and we will come prepared for it.
The rest of 2050 is covered too, including the pockets around Jack Floyd Reserve and Broadway Shopping Centre.
We confirm your slot the day before and arrive at a stated time. Forest Lodge and Newtown sit on the same run, so earlier appointments in 2050 come up regularly.
The reason the trail returns to the same spot in a Camperdown kitchen is that it is marked chemically. Wiping it buys hours. Treating the colony that maintains it is the only thing that ends it.
Some ants want protein, some want sugar, and the wrong bait gets ignored completely. Identifying what is trailing through a Camperdown kitchen is the difference between a result and a wasted visit.
Many ants get most of their sugar from honeydew - the secretion of aphids and scale insects they actively protect on garden plants. A Camperdown garden with a scale problem is feeding the ant colony that then comes indoors.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Shiny, black and small - Sydney's most common indoor ant. Trails follow skirting boards, window frames and power cables back to nests in wall voids, roof spaces or garden edges. Sweet baits work well on it.

Minute brown ants with larger-headed soldiers among them. Fine sand in paving joints, at slab edges and in grout is the tell. Because a colony holds many nests, oil-based granular baits are the right approach.

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

Big ants, usually out after dark, nesting in soil, hollow trees and timber that has gone soft or damp. They are not the structural threat their overseas relatives are, but finding one in a wall usually means there is a leak behind it.

Photo from an Elite job: an ant nest emerging from a mortar joint. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead straight into the wall cavity, which is where many black house ant colonies live.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail coming in from the external wall normally means a nest in the cavity or at the garden edge, and that entry point is where the tracing begins.
That fine sandy soil appearing between pavers, along the driveway and at slab joints is the classic coastal brown ant sign - they are nesting below.
Electrical fittings and switches stay warm, which is why ants nest in them. Do not spray into them; let us know and we will handle it properly.
Mating flights produce the winged swarms you see in spring and summer. Finding them indoors suggests a mature colony inside rather than outside.
Trails around the shower, vanity or toilet often mean moisture in the wall or a colony drinking from a slow leak.
These are the bull ants and jumper ants nesting in lawns and beds - a painful sting, and a risk of serious allergic reaction for some.

Supermarket sprays are repellent: ants detect them and walk around them. Professional non-repellent products are not detected, so foragers walk through, pick up the active and carry it back to nest mates.
A colony only takes bait if it wants that food at that moment. Ants switch between sugar and protein as their brood needs change, so we test preferences and change baits when needed.
Results come over days as the bait spreads. Spray the trail the next morning and you have killed the ants that were carrying it home. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Identification comes first. Then we trace the trails to the entry points and the nests themselves, whether those are in walls, paving, garden edges or the roof.
Sweet, protein and oil-based baits are offered in small amounts so the colony shows us its current preference.
Gel bait goes along trails, window frames and skirting where ants travel, out of reach of children and pets.
Outside, a non-repellent goes around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths, so ants coming in pick it up on the way.
Granular bait, or direct nest treatment, for the coastal brown ant nests under paving and at lawn edges.
The job ends with a written summary, advice on what to avoid spraying, and a 6-month warranty.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sweet liquids and honeydew; protein while the colony is raising young | Gel bait placed on trails, non-repellent applied at weep holes and window frames | Wiping trails clean daily, so the colony simply forages on a different route |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oil | Oil-based granular bait applied to paving and lawn edges | Pouring insecticide into one pile and assuming that was the colony |
| Argentine ant | Sugar for the most part, with periodic protein demand | Slow baits and a non-repellent applied along the property line | Using a repellent barrier spray - it divides the multi-queen colony |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, foraging after dark | Inspecting trails at night, baiting close to the nest, and fixing damp timber | Working only in daylight hours, when these ants are not out |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies wake up and start raising new brood, so protein demand rises | First trails indoors, sand piles reappearing in paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | The busiest foraging period, with mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants on the wing, and thick trails after a storm or a hot spell |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies peak in size and stock up for the cooler months | Trails into the pantry and around pet bowls |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Little happening outdoors, but a nest in a heated wall stays active | Activity around heaters, the hot water unit and kitchen areas |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Nests under paving are sheltered, warm and almost impossible to flood out. They need bait placed at the active entrances, not a hose.
The garden is usually the source. Shrubs touching the walls, mulch up against the footings and irrigated beds give a colony everything it needs within a metre of your kitchen.
If a trail runs up a shrub rather than into the house, the colony is farming aphids or scale for honeydew. Treating indoors will not stop it; the plant has to be dealt with too.
Finding the nest is the job - following the trail to it, not treating the visible end of it.
Sweet, protein or oil-based baits chosen for the ant and the season.
We use non-repellents the foragers carry back, not sprays that split the colony up.
A general ant treatment carries 6 months of cover - if they return inside it, so do we.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. We quote on the property rather than the postcode, so a unit in Camperdown and a large house are priced differently. The figure is fixed before any work starts. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. Camperdown sits roughly 3.8 km south-west of the CBD, inside our Inner West run, so we book a time and keep to it.
Older inner suburbs combine shared structure with ageing drainage, and ants exploit both. Rear courtyards that have been paved over make it worse by trapping damp against the walls.
Older joined housing. The treatment takes account of shared walls, continuous sub-floors and roof voids that run between properties.
