Budding splits the colony
Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.

Where Carlton sits, who covers it and what it costs.
If you are in Carlton or anywhere else in 2218, you are in our St George & Bayside patch, 13.6 km south-west of the CBD. We run Carlton on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
Around Carlton we work the pockets near Stell Reserve, Young Place Reserve and Westfield Hurstville most often, so the van is rarely far away when a job comes in.
We work under the Georges River and Bayside area here, and Allawah, Beverley Park and Kogarah are all on the same route, which matters when ant problems are moving between adjoining properties. Salt air and sandy ground keep sub-floors damp here, and damp is what sustains a population.
The ant calls we take from Carlton are mostly unit blocks a street or two back from the water, plus the odd beachfront cafe. If yours is one of them, mention it when you ring 1300 313 373 - it changes what the technician brings.
Beyond that we are regularly around Beverley Park Golf Club, and out as far as Carlton station. If you are anywhere in 2218, you are inside the area we run.
Bookings for 2218 are confirmed the day before with a set arrival time, not an all-day window. Jobs at Allawah and Beverley Park often share the same run, which is how earlier slots come up.
Indoor nests sit in wall cavities, behind splashbacks, under baths and in roof insulation. Finding them is most of the work on a Carlton job.
The reason the trail returns to the same spot in a Carlton kitchen is that it is marked chemically. Wiping it buys hours. Treating the colony that maintains it is the only thing that ends it.
People expect a single nest. Coastal brown ants and Argentine ants run dozens of connected nests across a property and beyond it, so the question is never just where it is but how far it goes.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Shiny, black and small - Sydney's most common indoor ant. Trails follow skirting boards, window frames and power cables back to nests in wall voids, roof spaces or garden edges. Sweet baits work well on it.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

Fast-moving, small and dull brown, in thick trails. Its nests are multi-queen and interconnected with neighbouring nests, so it spreads across properties - and repellent sprays accelerate exactly that.

Big ants, usually out after dark, nesting in soil, hollow trees and timber that has gone soft or damp. They are not the structural threat their overseas relatives are, but finding one in a wall usually means there is a leak behind it.

From an Elite job - a nest coming out of a mortar joint. Cracked mortar and weep holes open directly into the wall cavity, and that cavity is where a lot of black house ant colonies sit.

An Elite photo of gel bait on an active trail. The whole point is letting them feed and take it home, so the trail must be left alone once we have treated it.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
Fine sand pushed up through paving, driveway and slab joints is coastal brown ants underneath, almost without exception.
They go into switches and appliances for the warmth. Keep insecticide out of power points and tell us, so it can be treated safely.
Those spring and summer swarms of winged ants are mating flights. If they are coming out inside the house, there may be a mature colony in the building.
When trails appear around the shower, vanity or toilet, moisture is the reason - often a slow leak the colony is drinking from.
Lawns and garden beds are where bull ants and jumper ants nest. Their stings are painful and can trigger severe allergic reactions.

Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.
Repellent means detectable, and detectable means avoided. Non-repellent products let foragers walk through and transfer the active to the rest of the nest.
A colony's appetite shifts between sugar and protein with the brood cycle. Bait only works when it matches, which is why we test preferences on site.
Results come over days as the bait spreads. Spray the trail the next morning and you have killed the ants that were carrying it home. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
First the species, then the trails - followed back to where they enter and to nests in the wall, under paving, at garden edges or in the roof space.
A test with small amounts of each bait type - sweet, protein, oil-based - tells us what the colony wants at this point in its cycle.
Gel is placed on the trails themselves - along window frames and skirting boards - and positioned out of reach of children and pets.
The perimeter gets a non-repellent product - foundation, weep holes, door frames, paths - which intercepts ants before they are inside.
Coastal brown ant nests under paving and along lawn edges get granular bait or direct treatment.
The job ends with a written summary, advice on what to avoid spraying, and a 6-month warranty.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugars and honeydew, turning to protein while brood is being raised | Sweet gel on the trails themselves, with a non-repellent at weep holes and frames | Cleaning the trail off every day, which just sends them foraging somewhere else |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein rather than sugars | Granular bait with an oil base, spread on paving and at the lawn edge | Boiling water down one hole - there are dozens of other nests |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, mostly at night | Night-time trail inspection, bait near the nest, fix moisture in timber | Treating only in daylight when the ants are not active |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Insects and nectar outdoors | Direct nest treatment in lawns and garden beds | Digging into the nest by hand and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak foraging, mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants, heavy trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outside activity drops away, though nests in warm wall cavities carry on | Ants near heaters, hot water units and in the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Nests under paving are sheltered, warm and almost impossible to flood out. They need bait placed at the active entrances, not a hose.
A branch touching the roof is a bridge. Mulch banked against brickwork is harbourage. Most of what brings ants inside a Carlton home is in the garden immediately around it.
If a trail runs up a shrub rather than into the house, the colony is farming aphids or scale for honeydew. Treating indoors will not stop it; the plant has to be dealt with too.
We follow the trail back to the colony rather than treating the spot where you noticed it.
Which bait we use depends on the ant and the season: sweet, protein or oil-based.
We use non-repellents the foragers carry back, not sprays that split the colony up.
General treatments come with 6 months. Ants back within that window means we come back too.

At roughly 13.6 km south-west of the city, Carlton is on a route we run regularly. Same-day attendance is usually available. You will be given a time, not a window.
Being near the water means humidity that never really drops. Sub-floors stay moist, lower levels stay cool and damp, and ants do well in both.
Apartments near the beach and houses behind them. Either way the sub-floor and the lower level are the parts that matter.
We do all of those. A good share of the Carlton jobs we run are tenanted or strata properties, so the written record comes as standard.
Yes, when it is applied properly. We use registered products at label rates and tell you which areas to keep clear and for how long. Mention pets, fish tanks or allergies when you book.
Usually not. Most of the work is done with you in the house, and where a room does need to be clear it is for a short period we will tell you about on arrival.
Allow one to two hours for a typical Carlton property. Larger homes, or ones where the problem has spread, take longer and we will say so when we quote.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. Call us if activity picks up again and we will arrange the return visit.
Yes. As well as Carlton we cover Allawah, Beverley Park, Kogarah and Kogarah Bay on the same runs, so a job that crosses a boundary can be handled in one visit.
