Budding splits the colony
Multi-queen species - Argentine ants and several house ants among them - react to a repellent by splitting. A queen and a few hundred workers relocate, and one colony becomes two.

What we cover in Clyde, and how quickly we can get there.
Our Greater Parramatta & Cumberland technicians cover Clyde and the rest of 2142 as a matter of course - it is only about 17.7 km west of the city. We run Clyde on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
The Clyde addresses we attend cluster around Auburn Park and Primewest Auburn Megamall. Granville Place Shopping Centre is another part of the suburb we are called to often.
We work under the City of Parramatta and Cumberland area here, and Rosehill, Granville and Harris Park are all on the same route, which matters when ant problems are moving between adjoining properties. Most of the housing here shares a wall, a roof void or a sub-floor with something else, so we check what adjoins the property rather than treating it in isolation.
The ant calls we take from Clyde are mostly older semis with a paved rear courtyard and a sub-floor that no longer dries out. If yours is one of them, mention it when you ring 1300 313 373 - it changes what the technician brings.
We cover the remainder of 2142 as well, from Clyde station through to Granville station.
You get a confirmed time, not a window. We plan the 2142 run the day before, and if Rosehill or Granville is on the same round there is often an earlier slot going.
Several of the species we treat around Clyde are polydomous - one colony spread across many nests. Treating the nest you found leaves the rest of it working, which is why we look for the extent before we choose a product.
Indoor nests sit in wall cavities, behind splashbacks, under baths and in roof insulation. Finding them is most of the work on a Clyde job.
Ants will defend aphids and scale from predators because that honeydew is their sugar supply. Deal with the scale on the plants near the house and the ant pressure drops with it.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

A small black ant with a glossy body, and the one most often in Sydney kitchens. It nests in wall cavities, the roof void and garden edges, trails along skirtings and cabling, and feeds readily on sweet bait.

Minute brown ants with larger-headed soldiers among them. Fine sand in paving joints, at slab edges and in grout is the tell. Because a colony holds many nests, oil-based granular baits are the right approach.

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

Large and mostly nocturnal, nesting in soil, hollow trees and damp or softened timber. They rarely damage structure here, though a nest inside a wall is a reliable sign of moisture that needs attention.

An Elite photo of ants emerging from mortar. The route runs through weep holes and cracked joints straight into the wall cavity, which is the usual home for a black house ant colony.

An Elite job photo: gel placed directly on an active trail. Leave it be - the ants feeding there are the ones delivering it to the colony.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
Ants entering from the external wall point to a cavity or garden-edge nest. Finding that entry is the first step.
Fine soil pushed up along paving, driveways and slab joints is the classic sign of coastal brown ants nesting underneath.
Warmth is what draws them into switches and electrical fittings. Never spray into a power point - tell us instead and we will treat it safely.
Swarms of winged ants in spring and summer are mating flights. Seen indoors, they can mean a mature colony inside the building.
Ant trails at the shower, vanity or toilet usually come down to moisture - either damp in the wall or a slow leak they are drinking from.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in lawns and garden beds. Their stings hurt and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

The difference matters. Retail sprays are repellent - ants sense them and avoid the treated area. Non-repellent products cannot be detected, so foragers cross them, pick up the active and take it back to the nest.
A colony only takes bait if it wants that food at that moment. Ants switch between sugar and protein as their brood needs change, so we test preferences and change baits when needed.
It takes days for bait to move through a colony. Spraying the trail the day after our visit kills the very ants delivering it - our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We identify the ant and follow trails back to entry points and nests in walls, paving, garden edges and roof spaces.
A test with small amounts of each bait type - sweet, protein, oil-based - tells us what the colony wants at this point in its cycle.
Gel is placed on the trails themselves - along window frames and skirting boards - and positioned out of reach of children and pets.
A non-repellent band around the footings, weep holes, door frames and paths catches ants as they come in.
Coastal brown ant nests under paving and along lawn edges get granular bait or direct treatment.
Written summary, instructions on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty covering the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Mostly sweet liquids and honeydew, with protein demand during brood rearing | Gel bait along the trail, plus non-repellent treatment to weep holes and door frames | Daily detergent wiping of trails - it moves the foraging rather than stopping it |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oils | Oil-based granular bait on paving and lawn edges | Pouring boiling water or insecticide into one pile while dozens of nests remain |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Insects and nectar, always outside | The nest itself is treated directly, in lawn or garden bed | Hand-digging a nest, which reliably ends in stings |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies wake up and start raising new brood, so protein demand rises | First trails indoors, sand piles reappearing in paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging peaks, and warm humid spells trigger mating flights | Swarms of winged ants, and heavy trails following storms or heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor activity slows, but nests in heated walls keep going | Ants around heaters, hot water units and kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Nests under paving are sheltered, warm and almost impossible to flood out. They need bait placed at the active entrances, not a hose.
Winter does not kill the colony, it just slows it. The nest under a Clyde path in July is the same nest that produces the trail in October.
Mulch against the wall, a shrub touching the eaves and a damp garden bed along the footings all put ants within reach of the building. In Clyde we routinely find the colony is in the garden, not the house.
Finding the nest is the job - following the trail to it, not treating the visible end of it.
Sweet, protein or oil-based, picked to suit the ant and the point in the season.
Nothing repellent, because that causes budding. Non-repellent products get carried home instead.

Same-day attendance is usually available. Our Greater Parramatta & Cumberland technicians cover Clyde daily, and you get a confirmed arrival time when you book.
Older inner suburbs combine shared structure with ageing drainage, and ants exploit both. Rear courtyards that have been paved over make it worse by trapping damp against the walls.
Mostly terrace and semi. We look at the party wall, the sub-floor and the roof space, because those are the routes between houses.

Usually between one and two hours on site. Bigger properties and heavier infestations take more, and that is included in the quote rather than added afterwards.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. A return visit inside that period does not cost you anything.
