Budding splits the colony
Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.

Where Cranebrook sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Postcode 2749 covers Cranebrook and the streets immediately around it. At about 48.7 km west of the CBD it falls in the Penrith & the Outer West, where we have vans out daily. We travel out to Cranebrook on planned runs through the Penrith & the Outer West, so booking a day ahead gets you the best slot.
A lot of our Cranebrook jobs are in the streets around Jordan Springs Shopping Centre and Owens Park, and we are out near Wianamatta Nature Reserve regularly enough that the technician usually knows the access before they arrive.
The suburb sits in the Penrith City and Hawkesbury area. Jordan Springs, Cambridge Gardens and Werrington Downs are all covered on the same day, so a problem that has spread across a boundary can be handled in one visit. Bigger properties mean sheds, stables and stacked timber to check as well as the house.
The bulk of our Cranebrook work is acreage properties with outbuildings that need checking alongside the house. Mention the detail when you call 1300 313 373 - it decides how long we need on site.
Every part of 2749 is covered as standard.
You get a confirmed time, not a window. We plan the 2749 run the day before, and if Jordan Springs or Cambridge Gardens is on the same round there is often an earlier slot going.
People expect a single nest. Coastal brown ants and Argentine ants run dozens of connected nests across a property and beyond it, so the question is never just where it is but how far it goes.
Coastal brown ants, black house ants and odorous house ants all behave differently and all turn up around Cranebrook. We identify before we bait rather than putting down a general-purpose product and hoping.
If trails appear in winter, or in a first-floor bathroom with no outdoor route, the nest is probably inside the building.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Very small brown ants, with soldiers that have noticeably bigger heads. You spot them by the fine sandy soil pushed up through paving joints, slab edges and grout. The colonies are big and multi-nested, so oil-based granular bait is the tool.

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

Big ants, usually out after dark, nesting in soil, hollow trees and timber that has gone soft or damp. They are not the structural threat their overseas relatives are, but finding one in a wall usually means there is a leak behind it.

An Elite job photo showing a nest in masonry. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead into the wall cavity - the spot black house ants most often choose.

Photo from an Elite job: gel bait placed along an active trail. The ants are left to feed and carry the bait home, so we ask customers not to wipe or spray the trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
When they come in from the outside wall, the nest is usually in the cavity or just outside in the garden. We work back from the entry point.
If fine soil keeps appearing in the paving joints and along the drive, coastal brown ants are nesting beneath it.
A nest in a power point or appliance is about warmth. Spraying into electrical fittings is dangerous - tell us and we will treat it the right way.
Those spring and summer swarms of winged ants are mating flights. If they are coming out inside the house, there may be a mature colony in the building.
Bathroom trails around the shower, basin or toilet normally mean water: damp in the wall cavity, or a slow leak supplying the colony.
Bull and jumper ants live in lawn and garden-bed nests. The sting hurts, and for some people it brings on a serious allergic reaction.

Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.
Ants can detect a supermarket spray and will simply route around it. A professional non-repellent is undetectable, so they walk through it and carry the active home to the colony.
Bait is only taken if it matches what the colony wants right now. Their preference moves between sugar and protein as the brood changes, so we test and switch baits accordingly.
Give it days, not hours. Bait has to be carried through the colony, and spraying the trail afterwards destroys the couriers doing that work. Our blog covers budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We work out which ant it is and follow the trails back, which is what locates nests in wall cavities, under paving, along garden edges and in roof spaces.
Sweet, protein and oil-based baits are offered in small amounts so the colony shows us its current preference.
Indoor placements are gel on the trail - skirting, window frames, travel routes - sited away from children and pets.
The perimeter gets a non-repellent product - foundation, weep holes, door frames, paths - which intercepts ants before they are inside.
Under-paver and lawn-edge nests are handled with granular bait, or treated directly where that is better.
You receive the job summary in writing, guidance on what to leave alone, and 6 months of warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Mostly sweet liquids and honeydew, with protein demand during brood rearing | Gel bait along the trail, plus non-repellent treatment to weep holes and door frames | Daily detergent wiping of trails - it moves the foraging rather than stopping it |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oil | Oil-based granular bait applied to paving and lawn edges | Pouring insecticide into one pile and assuming that was the colony |
| Argentine ant | Chiefly sugars, with protein at intervals | Slow-release baits plus a non-repellent treatment along the property line | Repellent sprays at the boundary, which make a multi-queen colony bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Nocturnal, on sweet foods and insects | Trails inspected at night, bait placed near the nest, timber moisture fixed | Only ever treating during the day, when there is nothing to see |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Outdoor feeders on insects and nectar | Direct treatment of the nest in the lawn or garden bed | Opening the nest up by hand and being stung for it |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | The colony restarts and begins brood production, raising its protein needs | First trails inside, and sandy soil showing up in paving joints |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak foraging, mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants, heavy trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies reach full size and start stocking up ahead of the cold | Trails heading for the pantry and the pet food bowl |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outside activity drops away, though nests in warm wall cavities carry on | Ants near heaters, hot water units and in the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
A column of ants going in and out of a weep hole means they are nesting in the cavity, not the garden. Treating the garden bed in that case does nothing at all for a Cranebrook home.
Mulch against the wall, a shrub touching the eaves and a damp garden bed along the footings all put ants within reach of the building. In Cranebrook we routinely find the colony is in the garden, not the house.
For a Cranebrook cafe or kitchen, ants are a compliance finding. We run a documented program with monitoring points and reports your auditor will accept rather than a one-off spray.
Trails lead somewhere, so we follow them to the colony instead of spraying the sighting.
Baits are matched to the species and the season rather than used as a default.
Non-repellent products that foragers carry home, instead of sprays that scatter the colony.
A general ant treatment carries 6 months of cover - if they return inside it, so do we.

At roughly 48.7 km west of the city, Cranebrook is on a route we run regularly. We cover it on scheduled runs, so a day's notice gets you the best slot. You will be given a time, not a window.
Acreage means more harbourage. Stacked timber, disused sheds and open ground all support ants populations that eventually work their way inward.
Larger properties with outbuildings, so sheds, stables and stored timber are inspected alongside the house.
Yes. Houses, townhouses, units, strata common property, rentals and commercial sites in Cranebrook 2749 are all part of what we do, and the paperwork is the kind agents accept.
Yes, with the usual care. Everything is APVMA-registered and used to label, and we will work around pets, aquariums and anyone in the house with a respiratory condition if you tell us when you book.
Usually not. Most ant control work is done with you there, and anything that needs the room vacated is for a short period we will tell you about beforehand.
Allow an hour to two hours for most properties. A bigger building, or one where the problem has spread, takes longer - and we would rather tell you that when quoting than rush it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. A return visit within the warranty period costs you nothing.
Yes. As well as Cranebrook we cover Jordan Springs, Cambridge Gardens, Werrington Downs and Llandilo on the same runs, so a job that crosses a boundary can be handled in one visit.
