Budding splits the colony
Multi-queen species - Argentine ants and several house ants among them - react to a repellent by splitting. A queen and a few hundred workers relocate, and one colony becomes two.

Postcode 2567 covers Currans Hill and the streets immediately around it. At about 44.9 km south-west of the CBD it falls in the Macarthur, where we have vans out daily. We travel out to Currans Hill on planned runs through the Macarthur, so booking a day ahead gets you the best slot.
Our Currans Hill work takes in the streets by Marcellin Park and Thomas Donovan Park, through to South Creek Reserve at the other end.
Currans Hill is in the Campbelltown and Camden area, and we cover Smeaton Grange, Gregory Hills and Blairmount on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your ant problem has come from next door. Newer estate housing sits close together on small blocks, so what happens next door matters. We check the boundary and the fence line, not just the house.
Currans Hill jobs tend to be recently built homes where the activity started at the boundary. Let us know which when you ring and we will plan the visit around it.
South Creek Reserve and Mt Annan Marketplace are on the same round, which means every part of 2567 is within our area.
You get a confirmed time, not a window. We plan the 2567 run the day before, and if Smeaton Grange or Gregory Hills is on the same round there is often an earlier slot going.
Ants in timber are a symptom. They do not create the damp, they move into timber the damp has already softened, so the leak matters more than the ants.
A colony can occupy a garden bed, a paving slab and a wall cavity at once. That is why a single treated nest in Currans Hill changes very little on its own.
Coastal brown ants, black house ants and odorous house ants all behave differently and all turn up around Currans Hill. We identify before we bait rather than putting down a general-purpose product and hoping.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small, shiny and black, and one of the most common kitchen ants in Sydney. It trails along skirting boards, window frames and power cables, and nests in wall voids, roof spaces and garden edges. It readily takes sweet baits.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

Dull brown, small, and noticeable for the thickness and speed of its trails. Multi-queen nests connect to neighbouring ones, which is how an infestation covers several properties. Repellents make it markedly worse.

Large ants that come out at night and nest in soil, hollow trees or damp timber. Unlike the overseas carpenter ants they seldom threaten structure - but a nest in a wall tells you there is moisture there.

An Elite photo of ants emerging from mortar. The route runs through weep holes and cracked joints straight into the wall cavity, which is the usual home for a black house ant colony.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
When they come in from the outside wall, the nest is usually in the cavity or just outside in the garden. We work back from the entry point.
Fine soil pushed up along paving, driveways and slab joints is the classic sign of coastal brown ants nesting underneath.
A nest in a power point or appliance is about warmth. Spraying into electrical fittings is dangerous - tell us and we will treat it the right way.
Mating flights produce the winged swarms you see in spring and summer. Finding them indoors suggests a mature colony inside rather than outside.
Trails in the bathroom point to water in the wall or a slow leak the ants have found.
Lawns and garden beds are where bull ants and jumper ants nest. Their stings are painful and can trigger severe allergic reactions.

Ants can detect a supermarket spray and will simply route around it. A professional non-repellent is undetectable, so they walk through it and carry the active home to the colony.
Bait is only taken if it matches what the colony wants right now. Their preference moves between sugar and protein as the brood changes, so we test and switch baits accordingly.
Results come over days as the bait spreads. Spray the trail the next morning and you have killed the ants that were carrying it home. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Identification comes first. Then we trace the trails to the entry points and the nests themselves, whether those are in walls, paving, garden edges or the roof.
Small amounts of sweet, protein and oil-based bait show what the colony is feeding on right now.
Inside, gel bait follows the trails: window frames, skirting, the routes they already use, always placed where children and pets cannot get to it.
We treat the foundation line, weep holes, door frames and paths with a non-repellent so incoming ants carry it with them.
Granular bait or direct treatment for coastal brown ant nests under pavers and in lawn edges.
Written summary, instructions on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty covering the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Mostly sweet liquids and honeydew, with protein demand during brood rearing | Gel bait along the trail, plus non-repellent treatment to weep holes and door frames | Daily detergent wiping of trails - it moves the foraging rather than stopping it |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein | Granular oil-based bait across the paving and along lawn edges | Treating one sand pile with boiling water or insecticide when there are dozens more |
| Argentine ant | Mainly sugars, protein at some points in the cycle | Slow-acting bait with a non-repellent treatment right across the boundary | Spraying a repellent barrier, which causes a multi-queen nest to bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Nocturnal, on sweet foods and insects | Trails inspected at night, bait placed near the nest, timber moisture fixed | Only ever treating during the day, when there is nothing to see |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Outdoor feeders on insects and nectar | Direct treatment of the nest in the lawn or garden bed | Opening the nest up by hand and being stung for it |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies wake up and start raising new brood, so protein demand rises | First trails indoors, sand piles reappearing in paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging at its height, and mating flights whenever it turns warm and humid | Winged ants indoors, and much heavier trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies reach full size and start stocking up ahead of the cold | Trails heading for the pantry and the pet food bowl |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Quiet outside, but colonies in warm wall cavities keep working | Ants around the heater, the hot water unit and the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
A column of ants going in and out of a weep hole means they are nesting in the cavity, not the garden. Treating the garden bed in that case does nothing at all for a Currans Hill home.
The garden is usually the source. Shrubs touching the walls, mulch up against the footings and irrigated beds give a colony everything it needs within a metre of your kitchen.
Winter does not kill the colony, it just slows it. The nest under a Currans Hill path in July is the same nest that produces the trail in October.
Finding the nest is the job - following the trail to it, not treating the visible end of it.
Sweet, protein or oil-based, picked to suit the ant and the point in the season.
Non-repellent products only - they are taken back to the nest rather than scattering it.
General ant treatments are covered. If ants come back within 6 months, so do we.
