Budding splits the colony
Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.

Our South West Sydney technicians cover Fairfield West and the rest of 2165 as a matter of course - it is only about 26.4 km west of the city. We cover Fairfield West on scheduled runs through the South West Sydney, and we will give you a firm time rather than a window.
If you are near Fairfield City Golf Course, Lynesta Park or Wakeley Centre, that is ground we cover constantly - it is the busiest part of Fairfield West for us.
Fairfield West is in the Liverpool, Fairfield and Cumberland area, and we cover Canley Heights, Fairfield Heights and Canley Vale on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your ant problem has come from next door. On a newer estate the houses are near-identical and tightly spaced, which means a problem in one tends to turn up in the ones either side.
What we see in Fairfield West is recently built homes where the activity started at the boundary. Describing it accurately when you book saves a second visit.
The whole of 2165 is on our regular run.
We confirm your slot the day before and arrive at a stated time. Canley Heights and Fairfield Heights sit on the same run, so earlier appointments in 2165 come up regularly.
A trail along a bench is foragers, and foragers are maybe five per cent of the colony. The queens, the brood and most of the workers are in a nest you have not found, which is why wiping the trail achieves nothing lasting in a Fairfield West kitchen.
After heavy rain the opposite happens - flooded nests push colonies up and inside. Both extremes send ants into Fairfield West houses for different reasons.
Pharaoh and some other small species nest indoors in warm voids and never go outside at all. In a Fairfield West house that changes the treatment completely - and makes spraying actively harmful, because it buds the colony.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Tiny brown ants with a larger-headed soldier caste. The giveaway is loose sandy soil pushed up between pavers, along slab edges and in grout. Colonies are large with many nests, and oil-based granular baits work well.

Dull brown, small, and noticeable for the thickness and speed of its trails. Multi-queen nests connect to neighbouring ones, which is how an infestation covers several properties. Repellents make it markedly worse.

Large and mostly nocturnal, nesting in soil, hollow trees and damp or softened timber. They rarely damage structure here, though a nest inside a wall is a reliable sign of moisture that needs attention.

An Elite photo of ants emerging from mortar. The route runs through weep holes and cracked joints straight into the wall cavity, which is the usual home for a black house ant colony.

From an Elite job - gel bait set down on a live trail. The ants feed and carry it back to the nest, which is why we ask you not to wipe or spray that trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
When they come in from the outside wall, the nest is usually in the cavity or just outside in the garden. We work back from the entry point.
Fine soil pushed up along paving, driveways and slab joints is the classic sign of coastal brown ants nesting underneath.
Ants nesting in switches and electrical fittings are drawn to the warmth. Do not spray into power points; tell us so we can treat safely.
Those spring and summer swarms of winged ants are mating flights. If they are coming out inside the house, there may be a mature colony in the building.
Ant trails at the shower, vanity or toilet usually come down to moisture - either damp in the wall or a slow leak they are drinking from.
Lawns and garden beds are where bull ants and jumper ants nest. Their stings are painful and can trigger severe allergic reactions.

Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.
Supermarket sprays are repellent: ants detect them and walk around them. Professional non-repellent products are not detected, so foragers walk through, pick up the active and carry it back to nest mates.
A colony's appetite shifts between sugar and protein with the brood cycle. Bait only works when it matches, which is why we test preferences on site.
Bait takes days to work through a colony. If you spray the trail the day after we leave, you kill the couriers. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Species confirmed, then trails traced to entry points and to the nests - walls, paving, garden edges, roof space.
Sweet, protein and oil-based baits are offered in small amounts so the colony shows us its current preference.
Inside, gel bait follows the trails: window frames, skirting, the routes they already use, always placed where children and pets cannot get to it.
Outside, a non-repellent goes around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths, so ants coming in pick it up on the way.
Granular bait, or direct nest treatment, for the coastal brown ant nests under paving and at lawn edges.
A written summary, clear advice on what not to spray afterwards, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Honeydew and sugary liquids, switching to protein when there is brood | Sweet gel on active trails and a non-repellent perimeter at frames and weep holes | Washing the trail down each day, which only relocates the foraging route |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein rather than sugars | Granular bait with an oil base, spread on paving and at the lawn edge | Boiling water down one hole - there are dozens of other nests |
| Argentine ant | Sugar for the most part, with periodic protein demand | Slow baits and a non-repellent applied along the property line | Using a repellent barrier spray - it divides the multi-queen colony |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Insects and nectar, always outside | The nest itself is treated directly, in lawn or garden bed | Hand-digging a nest, which reliably ends in stings |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies come out of winter and begin raising brood, which pushes protein demand up | The first indoor trails of the season, and sand reappearing between pavers |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging peaks, and warm humid spells trigger mating flights | Swarms of winged ants, and heavy trails following storms or heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | The colony is at its largest and laying in stores before winter | Trails running into pantries and to pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Little happening outdoors, but a nest in a heated wall stays active | Activity around heaters, the hot water unit and kitchen areas |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Mulch against the wall, a shrub touching the eaves and a damp garden bed along the footings all put ants within reach of the building. In Fairfield West we routinely find the colony is in the garden, not the house.
We are around Wakeley Centre most weeks and cover every street in 2165, including the ones off the main roads.
Fine soil pushed up along paving joints, path edges and garden edging is excavation - there is a nest directly beneath. Around Fairfield West that is coastal brown ants more often than not.
We follow the trail back to the colony rather than treating the spot where you noticed it.
Which bait we use depends on the ant and the season: sweet, protein or oil-based.
Non-repellent products that foragers carry home, instead of sprays that scatter the colony.
General treatments come with 6 months. Ants back within that window means we come back too.
