Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

Where Girraween sits, who covers it and what it costs.
If you are in Girraween or anywhere else in 2145, you are in our Greater Parramatta & Cumberland patch, 25.7 km west of the CBD. We cover Girraween on scheduled runs through the Greater Parramatta & Cumberland, and we will give you a firm time rather than a window.
Our Girraween work takes in the streets by Pemulwuy Marketplace and Pendle Hill station, through to Toongabbie station at the other end.
The suburb sits in the City of Parramatta and Cumberland area. Pendle Hill, Toongabbie and Pemulwuy are all covered on the same day, so a problem that has spread across a boundary can be handled in one visit. Terraces, semis and converted blocks share cavities and risers, which is why a single-unit treatment often does not hold on its own.
The bulk of our Girraween work is apartments and converted blocks where the kitchen backs onto a service riser. Mention the detail when you call 1300 313 373 - it decides how long we need on site.
Beyond that we are regularly around Bathurst Street Park, and out as far as John Silverthorne Park. If you are anywhere in 2145, you are inside the area we run.
The 2145 run is set the day before and you are given an arrival time. Where Pendle Hill and Toongabbie fall on the same round, we can usually bring the visit forward.
Ants will defend aphids and scale from predators because that honeydew is their sugar supply. Deal with the scale on the plants near the house and the ant pressure drops with it.
If trails appear in winter, or in a first-floor bathroom with no outdoor route, the nest is probably inside the building.
Some species excavate soft, damp timber rather than eat it. Finding them in a Girraween window frame or bathroom wall usually means moisture has been getting into that timber for a while.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small, shiny and black, and one of the most common kitchen ants in Sydney. It trails along skirting boards, window frames and power cables, and nests in wall voids, roof spaces and garden edges. It readily takes sweet baits.

Minute brown ants with larger-headed soldiers among them. Fine sand in paving joints, at slab edges and in grout is the tell. Because a colony holds many nests, oil-based granular baits are the right approach.

Small and flat brown in colour, running in dense fast trails. Because nests hold many queens and join with those next door, the infestation is usually bigger than one property. Never spray a repellent on it.

These are the large night-active ants that nest in soil, hollow trees and timber that has softened with damp. Structural damage is uncommon in Australia, but a wall nest points to a leak worth chasing.

An Elite photo of ants emerging from mortar. The route runs through weep holes and cracked joints straight into the wall cavity, which is the usual home for a black house ant colony.

An Elite job photo: gel placed directly on an active trail. Leave it be - the ants feeding there are the ones delivering it to the colony.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail coming in from the external wall normally means a nest in the cavity or at the garden edge, and that entry point is where the tracing begins.
That fine sandy soil appearing between pavers, along the driveway and at slab joints is the classic coastal brown ant sign - they are nesting below.
Warmth is what draws them into switches and electrical fittings. Never spray into a power point - tell us instead and we will treat it safely.
Winged ants swarming in the warmer months are reproductives on a mating flight. Indoors, that can indicate an established colony within the structure.
Bathroom trails around the shower, basin or toilet normally mean water: damp in the wall cavity, or a slow leak supplying the colony.
These are the bull ants and jumper ants nesting in lawns and beds - a painful sting, and a risk of serious allergic reaction for some.

Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.
Repellent means detectable, and detectable means avoided. Non-repellent products let foragers walk through and transfer the active to the rest of the nest.
A colony's appetite shifts between sugar and protein with the brood cycle. Bait only works when it matches, which is why we test preferences on site.
Give it days, not hours. Bait has to be carried through the colony, and spraying the trail afterwards destroys the couriers doing that work. Our blog covers budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We identify the ant and follow trails back to entry points and nests in walls, paving, garden edges and roof spaces.
A test with small amounts of each bait type - sweet, protein, oil-based - tells us what the colony wants at this point in its cycle.
Indoor placements are gel on the trail - skirting, window frames, travel routes - sited away from children and pets.
The perimeter gets a non-repellent product - foundation, weep holes, door frames, paths - which intercepts ants before they are inside.
Granular bait or direct treatment for coastal brown ant nests under pavers and in lawn edges.
The job ends with a written summary, advice on what to avoid spraying, and a 6-month warranty.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sweet liquids and honeydew; protein while the colony is raising young | Gel bait placed on trails, non-repellent applied at weep holes and window frames | Wiping trails clean daily, so the colony simply forages on a different route |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oil | Oil-based granular bait applied to paving and lawn edges | Pouring insecticide into one pile and assuming that was the colony |
| Argentine ant | Mainly sugars, protein at some points in the cycle | Slow-acting bait with a non-repellent treatment right across the boundary | Spraying a repellent barrier, which causes a multi-queen nest to bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Insects and nectar outdoors | Direct nest treatment in lawns and garden beds | Digging into the nest by hand and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | The busiest foraging period, with mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants on the wing, and thick trails after a storm or a hot spell |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies peak in size and stock up for the cooler months | Trails into the pantry and around pet bowls |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Quiet outside, but colonies in warm wall cavities keep working | Ants around the heater, the hot water unit and the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
If a trail runs up a shrub rather than into the house, the colony is farming aphids or scale for honeydew. Treating indoors will not stop it; the plant has to be dealt with too.
Activity climbs from early spring as colonies start brood-rearing, peaks through the hot months and tails off in autumn. Treating in early spring around Girraween gets ahead of it rather than chasing it.
Heavy rain floods shallow nests, and the colony moves to the nearest dry cavity - which is usually a wall, a subfloor or under a slab. A sudden indoor trail in Girraween after a storm is almost always this.
Trails are traced to the colony, not just sprayed where you saw them.
Sweet, protein or oil-based baits chosen for the ant and the season.
Sprays that scatter a colony are avoided entirely in favour of non-repellents the ants deliver themselves.
If ants return within 6 months of a general treatment, we return at no charge.

Most of this area is terrace, semi and converted block, and those share more than people realise - cavities, roof spaces, drainage. ants use all of it.
Terraces and semis, often with a paved rear courtyard that traps damp against the wall - both of which shape the job.
Yes - freestanding homes, townhouses, apartments, rentals and business premises in Girraween 2145 are all covered, with documentation suitable for an agent or a strata manager.
