Budding splits the colony
A repellent does not kill a multi-queen colony, it divides it. A queen and several hundred workers shift to a new site, leaving you with two nests instead of one.

What we cover in Glenfield, and how quickly we can get there.
Postcode 2167 covers Glenfield and the streets immediately around it. At about 31.3 km west of the CBD it falls in the Macarthur, where we have vans out daily. We cover Glenfield on scheduled runs through the Macarthur, and we will give you a firm time rather than a window.
A lot of our Glenfield jobs are in the streets around Leacock Regional Park and Casula Mall, and we are out near Glenfield station regularly enough that the technician usually knows the access before they arrive.
This is the Campbelltown and Camden area, and our runs here also take in Macquarie Links, Casula and Macquarie Fields. Estate blocks are compact with narrow side passages, so access and the perimeter are where most of the work happens.
Around Glenfield the pattern is fairly consistent: estate houses with narrow side access and a shared fence line. Tell us which it is on the phone and we will come prepared for it.
We cover the remainder of 2167 as well, from Macquarie Fields station through to Lalor Park.
When you book, we confirm the 2167 run the day before and give you an arrival time rather than a window. If we are already out at Macquarie Links or Casula that morning, we will usually offer you the earlier slot.
Coastal brown ants, black house ants and odorous house ants all behave differently and all turn up around Glenfield. We identify before we bait rather than putting down a general-purpose product and hoping.
The reason the trail returns to the same spot in a Glenfield kitchen is that it is marked chemically. Wiping it buys hours. Treating the colony that maintains it is the only thing that ends it.
Several of the species we treat around Glenfield are polydomous - one colony spread across many nests. Treating the nest you found leaves the rest of it working, which is why we look for the extent before we choose a product.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

The small glossy black one you find in the kitchen. It runs along skirtings, window frames and cabling, nesting in wall cavities, roof voids and the edges of garden beds, and it takes sweet bait without much persuading.

Tiny brown ants with a larger-headed soldier caste. The giveaway is loose sandy soil pushed up between pavers, along slab edges and in grout. Colonies are large with many nests, and oil-based granular baits work well.

Small and flat brown in colour, running in dense fast trails. Because nests hold many queens and join with those next door, the infestation is usually bigger than one property. Never spray a repellent on it.

Large ants that come out at night and nest in soil, hollow trees or damp timber. Unlike the overseas carpenter ants they seldom threaten structure - but a nest in a wall tells you there is moisture there.

An Elite photo of ants emerging from mortar. The route runs through weep holes and cracked joints straight into the wall cavity, which is the usual home for a black house ant colony.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail coming in from the external wall normally means a nest in the cavity or at the garden edge, and that entry point is where the tracing begins.
Fine sand pushed up through paving, driveway and slab joints is coastal brown ants underneath, almost without exception.
Ants nesting in switches and electrical fittings are drawn to the warmth. Do not spray into power points; tell us so we can treat safely.
Winged ants swarming in the warmer months are reproductives on a mating flight. Indoors, that can indicate an established colony within the structure.
When trails appear around the shower, vanity or toilet, moisture is the reason - often a slow leak the colony is drinking from.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in lawns and garden beds. Their stings hurt and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

A repellent does not kill a multi-queen colony, it divides it. A queen and several hundred workers shift to a new site, leaving you with two nests instead of one.
Ants can detect a supermarket spray and will simply route around it. A professional non-repellent is undetectable, so they walk through it and carry the active home to the colony.
Ants will ignore bait that does not suit their current needs. Because they alternate between sugar and protein depending on the brood, we test preference rather than assume.
It takes days for bait to move through a colony. Spraying the trail the day after our visit kills the very ants delivering it - our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Species confirmed, then trails traced to entry points and to the nests - walls, paving, garden edges, roof space.
Before committing, we offer a little of each bait type and let the colony tell us which one it is on.
We run gel along the active trails, window frames and skirting, keeping every placement out of reach of children and animals.
A non-repellent treatment around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths intercepts ants coming in.
Under-paver and lawn-edge nests are handled with granular bait, or treated directly where that is better.
Written summary, instructions on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty covering the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugars and honeydew, turning to protein while brood is being raised | Sweet gel on the trails themselves, with a non-repellent at weep holes and frames | Cleaning the trail off every day, which just sends them foraging somewhere else |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oily foods | Oil-based granular bait over paving and lawn margins | Attacking a single visible nest while the rest of the colony's nests carry on |
| Argentine ant | Chiefly sugars, with protein at intervals | Slow-release baits plus a non-repellent treatment along the property line | Repellent sprays at the boundary, which make a multi-queen colony bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, active after dark | Night trail inspection, baiting near the nest, and dealing with damp timber | Inspecting in daylight when the colony is not foraging |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging peaks, and warm humid spells trigger mating flights | Swarms of winged ants, and heavy trails following storms or heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Full colony size, and foraging to build stores before it cools | Pantry trails, and ants on the pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor foraging slows right down while nests in heated walls continue | Ants showing up by heaters, hot water services and in kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Our Glenfield runs take in Casula Mall and continue across to the Macquarie Links boundary - all the same service area.
For a Glenfield cafe or kitchen, ants are a compliance finding. We run a documented program with monitoring points and reports your auditor will accept rather than a one-off spray.
Winter does not kill the colony, it just slows it. The nest under a Glenfield path in July is the same nest that produces the trail in October.
We follow the trail back to the colony rather than treating the spot where you noticed it.
The bait is chosen for the species and the time of year - sweet, protein or oil-based.
Non-repellent products only - they are taken back to the nest rather than scattering it.
If ants return within 6 months of a general treatment, we return at no charge.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. We quote on the property rather than the postcode, so a unit in Glenfield and a large house are priced differently. The figure is fixed before any work starts. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
We cover it on scheduled runs, so a day's notice gets you the best slot. Glenfield is about 31.3 km west of the CBD in the Macarthur, and we give you a firm arrival time rather than an all-day window.
On a newer estate the boundaries are close and the landscaping is young, so ants move between properties along fence lines with very little to stop them.
Newer detached homes on compact blocks, so access down the side and the shared fence line shape how we work.
We do all of those. A good share of the Glenfield jobs we run are tenanted or strata properties, so the written record comes as standard.
Yes. The products are registered for this use and applied at label rates, and placement keeps them away from where children and animals go. Let us know at booking about pets, fish tanks or anyone with asthma and we will plan the visit around it.
In most cases you can stay. Where an area does need to be left clear it is for a couple of hours at most, and we say so before we start.
Usually between one and two hours on site. Bigger properties and heavier infestations take more, and that is included in the quote rather than added afterwards.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. That is the point of the warranty - you do not pay twice for the same problem.
We cover the whole of Glenfield, from the streets around Casula Mall out to the suburb boundary and on into Macquarie Links.
