Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

Where Guildford West sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Guildford West is part of the Greater Parramatta & Cumberland, 22.8 km or so west of the GPO, and 2161 is a postcode we know well. We run Guildford West on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
A lot of our Guildford West jobs are in the streets around Hyland Road Reserve and Neeta City Shopping Centre, and we are out near Woodville Golf Course regularly enough that the technician usually knows the access before they arrive.
Guildford West is in the City of Parramatta and Cumberland area, and we cover Yennora, Merrylands West and Fairfield on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your ant problem has come from next door. Most of the housing here shares a wall, a roof void or a sub-floor with something else, so we check what adjoins the property rather than treating it in isolation.
The ant calls we take from Guildford West are mostly terraces and semis where the problem has come through a shared wall. If yours is one of them, mention it when you ring 1300 313 373 - it changes what the technician brings.
Beyond that we are regularly around Yennora station, and out as far as O S Young Park. If you are anywhere in 2161, you are inside the area we run.
When you book, we confirm the 2161 run the day before and give you an arrival time rather than a window. If we are already out at Yennora or Merrylands West that morning, we will usually offer you the earlier slot.
Some species excavate soft, damp timber rather than eat it. Finding them in a Guildford West window frame or bathroom wall usually means moisture has been getting into that timber for a while.
Some ants want protein, some want sugar, and the wrong bait gets ignored completely. Identifying what is trailing through a Guildford West kitchen is the difference between a result and a wasted visit.
Many ants get most of their sugar from honeydew - the secretion of aphids and scale insects they actively protect on garden plants. A Guildford West garden with a scale problem is feeding the ant colony that then comes indoors.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

The small glossy black one you find in the kitchen. It runs along skirtings, window frames and cabling, nesting in wall cavities, roof voids and the edges of garden beds, and it takes sweet bait without much persuading.

Minute brown ants with larger-headed soldiers among them. Fine sand in paving joints, at slab edges and in grout is the tell. Because a colony holds many nests, oil-based granular baits are the right approach.

Fast-moving, small and dull brown, in thick trails. Its nests are multi-queen and interconnected with neighbouring nests, so it spreads across properties - and repellent sprays accelerate exactly that.

Large ants, often active at night, that nest in soil, hollow trees and softened or damp timber. Unlike the notorious overseas species they are rarely a structural pest, but a nest in a wall often points to a leak worth fixing.

Photo from an Elite job: an ant nest emerging from a mortar joint. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead straight into the wall cavity, which is where many black house ant colonies live.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
Fine soil pushed up along paving, driveways and slab joints is the classic sign of coastal brown ants nesting underneath.
Warmth is what draws them into switches and electrical fittings. Never spray into a power point - tell us instead and we will treat it safely.
Mating flights produce the winged swarms you see in spring and summer. Finding them indoors suggests a mature colony inside rather than outside.
Trails around the shower, vanity or toilet often mean moisture in the wall or a colony drinking from a slow leak.
These are the bull ants and jumper ants nesting in lawns and beds - a painful sting, and a risk of serious allergic reaction for some.

Ants can detect a supermarket spray and will simply route around it. A professional non-repellent is undetectable, so they walk through it and carry the active home to the colony.
Bait is only taken if it matches what the colony wants right now. Their preference moves between sugar and protein as the brood changes, so we test and switch baits accordingly.
A bait program works over days. The worst thing you can do is spray the trail once we have gone - those ants are the delivery system. See our blog on budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We work out which ant it is and follow the trails back, which is what locates nests in wall cavities, under paving, along garden edges and in roof spaces.
We put out small quantities of sweet, protein and oil-based bait to see which the colony is actually taking today.
Inside, gel bait follows the trails: window frames, skirting, the routes they already use, always placed where children and pets cannot get to it.
The perimeter gets a non-repellent product - foundation, weep holes, door frames, paths - which intercepts ants before they are inside.
For nests beneath pavers and in lawn edges - typically coastal brown ants - we use granular bait or treat the nest directly.
The job ends with a written summary, advice on what to avoid spraying, and a 6-month warranty.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Mostly sweet liquids and honeydew, with protein demand during brood rearing | Gel bait along the trail, plus non-repellent treatment to weep holes and door frames | Daily detergent wiping of trails - it moves the foraging rather than stopping it |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oily foods | Oil-based granular bait over paving and lawn margins | Attacking a single visible nest while the rest of the colony's nests carry on |
| Argentine ant | Chiefly sugars, with protein at intervals | Slow-release baits plus a non-repellent treatment along the property line | Repellent sprays at the boundary, which make a multi-queen colony bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, mostly at night | Night-time trail inspection, bait near the nest, fix moisture in timber | Treating only in daylight when the ants are not active |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | The busiest foraging period, with mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants on the wing, and thick trails after a storm or a hot spell |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Full colony size, and foraging to build stores before it cools | Pantry trails, and ants on the pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor activity slows, but nests in heated walls keep going | Ants around heaters, hot water units and kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
If a trail runs up a shrub rather than into the house, the colony is farming aphids or scale for honeydew. Treating indoors will not stop it; the plant has to be dealt with too.
Ants in the cavity of a Guildford West house will appear at power points, architraves and ceiling roses - anywhere the cavity opens into the room.
Heavy rain floods shallow nests, and the colony moves to the nearest dry cavity - which is usually a wall, a subfloor or under a slab. A sudden indoor trail in Guildford West after a storm is almost always this.
Trails are traced to the colony, not just sprayed where you saw them.
Sweet, protein or oil-based, picked to suit the ant and the point in the season.
Nothing repellent, because that causes budding. Non-repellent products get carried home instead.
A general ant treatment carries 6 months of cover - if they return inside it, so do we.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. We quote on the property rather than the postcode, so a unit in Guildford West and a large house are priced differently. The figure is fixed before any work starts. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. Guildford West is about 22.8 km west of the CBD in the Greater Parramatta & Cumberland, and we give you a firm arrival time rather than an all-day window.
Most of this area is terrace, semi and converted block, and those share more than people realise - cavities, roof spaces, drainage. ants use all of it.
Joined older housing, often with a paved rear courtyard holding damp against the wall. Both things shape the treatment.
We do all of those. A good share of the Guildford West jobs we run are tenanted or strata properties, so the written record comes as standard.
Yes. The products are registered for this use and applied at label rates, and placement keeps them away from where children and animals go. Let us know at booking about pets, fish tanks or anyone with asthma and we will plan the visit around it.
In most cases you can stay. Where an area does need to be left clear it is for a couple of hours at most, and we say so before we start.
An hour to two hours covers most jobs. The size of the building and the extent of the problem are what change it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. That is the point of the warranty - you do not pay twice for the same problem.
We cover the whole of Guildford West, from the streets around Hyland Road Reserve out to the suburb boundary and on into Yennora.
