Budding splits the colony
A repellent does not kill a multi-queen colony, it divides it. A queen and several hundred workers shift to a new site, leaving you with two nests instead of one.

Hornsby sits about 20.9 km north-west of the CBD in the Upper North Shore, and postcode 2077 is one we are in most weeks. We run Hornsby on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
If you are near Hornsby station, Cenotaph Park or Collingridge Reserve, that is ground we cover constantly - it is the busiest part of Hornsby for us.
The suburb sits in the Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby area. Asquith, Wahroonga and North Wahroonga are all covered on the same day, so a problem that has spread across a boundary can be handled in one visit. With bushland close by there is constant pressure from outside, so the perimeter and the fence line get as much attention as the house.
Most Hornsby bookings come in as houses backing onto a reserve, where the pressure is constant from outside. Say which one applies when you call 1300 313 373 and the technician will have the right products on the van.
We also work the streets near Palmerstone Centre and across toward Thornleigh Driving Range - the whole of 2077 is covered.
We confirm your slot the day before and arrive at a stated time. Asquith and Wahroonga sit on the same run, so earlier appointments in 2077 come up regularly.
In a dry spell ants move indoors looking for moisture, which is why a spotless Hornsby kitchen still gets trails in January. The sink, the pet bowl and the shower recess are the attractions.
Some ants want protein, some want sugar, and the wrong bait gets ignored completely. Identifying what is trailing through a Hornsby kitchen is the difference between a result and a wasted visit.
Ants in timber are a symptom. They do not create the damp, they move into timber the damp has already softened, so the leak matters more than the ants.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

Small and flat brown in colour, running in dense fast trails. Because nests hold many queens and join with those next door, the infestation is usually bigger than one property. Never spray a repellent on it.

Large ants that come out at night and nest in soil, hollow trees or damp timber. Unlike the overseas carpenter ants they seldom threaten structure - but a nest in a wall tells you there is moisture there.

Photo from an Elite job: an ant nest emerging from a mortar joint. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead straight into the wall cavity, which is where many black house ant colonies live.

An Elite job photo: gel placed directly on an active trail. Leave it be - the ants feeding there are the ones delivering it to the colony.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
If fine soil keeps appearing in the paving joints and along the drive, coastal brown ants are nesting beneath it.
Ants nesting in switches and electrical fittings are drawn to the warmth. Do not spray into power points; tell us so we can treat safely.
Mating flights produce the winged swarms you see in spring and summer. Finding them indoors suggests a mature colony inside rather than outside.
Bathroom trails around the shower, basin or toilet normally mean water: damp in the wall cavity, or a slow leak supplying the colony.
Lawns and garden beds are where bull ants and jumper ants nest. Their stings are painful and can trigger severe allergic reactions.
One call to a licensed Sydney technician gets you straight advice and a fixed quote within 30 minutes.
A repellent does not kill a multi-queen colony, it divides it. A queen and several hundred workers shift to a new site, leaving you with two nests instead of one.
The difference matters. Retail sprays are repellent - ants sense them and avoid the treated area. Non-repellent products cannot be detected, so foragers cross them, pick up the active and take it back to the nest.
A colony only takes bait if it wants that food at that moment. Ants switch between sugar and protein as their brood needs change, so we test preferences and change baits when needed.
It takes days for bait to move through a colony. Spraying the trail the day after our visit kills the very ants delivering it - our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Identification comes first. Then we trace the trails to the entry points and the nests themselves, whether those are in walls, paving, garden edges or the roof.
Small amounts of sweet, protein and oil-based bait show what the colony is feeding on right now.
Gel is placed on the trails themselves - along window frames and skirting boards - and positioned out of reach of children and pets.
A non-repellent band around the footings, weep holes, door frames and paths catches ants as they come in.
Granular bait, or direct nest treatment, for the coastal brown ant nests under paving and at lawn edges.
Written summary, instructions on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty covering the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Honeydew and sugary liquids, switching to protein when there is brood | Sweet gel on active trails and a non-repellent perimeter at frames and weep holes | Washing the trail down each day, which only relocates the foraging route |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oil | Oil-based granular bait applied to paving and lawn edges | Pouring insecticide into one pile and assuming that was the colony |
| Argentine ant | Sugar for the most part, with periodic protein demand | Slow baits and a non-repellent applied along the property line | Using a repellent barrier spray - it divides the multi-queen colony |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Nocturnal, on sweet foods and insects | Trails inspected at night, bait placed near the nest, timber moisture fixed | Only ever treating during the day, when there is nothing to see |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects, outdoors | Treating the nest directly where it sits in lawn or garden bed | Digging the nest out by hand, which is how people get stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Activity resumes and brood rearing starts, so the colony wants protein | Trails appearing indoors again, and fresh sand piles in the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging peaks, and warm humid spells trigger mating flights | Swarms of winged ants, and heavy trails following storms or heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies peak in size and stock up for the cooler months | Trails into the pantry and around pet bowls |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor foraging slows right down while nests in heated walls continue | Ants showing up by heaters, hot water services and in kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
We are around Collingridge Reserve most weeks and cover every street in 2077, including the ones off the main roads.
The garden is usually the source. Shrubs touching the walls, mulch up against the footings and irrigated beds give a colony everything it needs within a metre of your kitchen.
After sustained rain in Hornsby we get a run of calls, and the cause is consistent: shallow nests waterlogged, the colony moved into a wall cavity or subfloor to dry out.
Finding the nest is the job - following the trail to it, not treating the visible end of it.
The bait is chosen for the species and the time of year - sweet, protein or oil-based.
Nothing repellent, because that causes budding. Non-repellent products get carried home instead.
If ants return within 6 months of a general treatment, we return at no charge.

Same-day attendance is usually available. Hornsby is about 20.9 km north-west of the CBD in the Upper North Shore, and we give you a firm arrival time rather than an all-day window.
Undisturbed ground, leaf litter and fallen timber right to the boundary mean ants are always established next to the house. Re-entry, not eradication, is what we are managing here.
Detached houses on bush edges, where re-entry is the issue rather than the initial treatment.
We do. A lot of our Hornsby work is rentals and strata, so the report, the products used and the areas treated are all recorded in writing for whoever needs them.
Yes. The products are registered for this use and applied at label rates, and placement keeps them away from where children and animals go. Let us know at booking about pets, fish tanks or anyone with asthma and we will plan the visit around it.
You do not normally need to leave. Anything requiring an empty room is short, and you will know about it before the work starts.
Allow one to two hours for a typical Hornsby property. Larger homes, or ones where the problem has spread, take longer and we will say so when we quote.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. Ring us if activity picks up again inside that period and we will arrange the return.
Yes. As well as Hornsby we cover Asquith, Wahroonga, North Wahroonga and Warrawee on the same runs, so a job that crosses a boundary can be handled in one visit.
