Budding splits the colony
Where a species has many queens, a repellent spray causes budding rather than death. Part of the colony, queen included, moves elsewhere, and you have doubled the problem.

What we cover in Kingsgrove, and how quickly we can get there.
Kingsgrove is part of the Canterbury-Bankstown, 12.7 km or so south-west of the GPO, and 2208 is a postcode we know well. We run Kingsgrove on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
Most weeks we are somewhere between Rainbow Lorikeet Reserve and Canterbury Public Golf Course in Kingsgrove, and Kingsgrove station is close enough to be on the same run.
Kingsgrove is in the Canterbury-Bankstown area, and we cover Bexley North, Beverly Hills and Bardwell Park on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your ant problem has come from next door. Most of the housing here shares a wall, a roof void or a sub-floor with something else, so we check what adjoins the property rather than treating it in isolation.
Most Kingsgrove bookings come in as terraces and semis where the problem has come through a shared wall. Say which one applies when you call 1300 313 373 and the technician will have the right products on the van.
We also work the area near Forrester Reserve, and the rest of 2208 with it.
We confirm your slot the day before and arrive at a stated time. Bexley North and Beverly Hills sit on the same run, so earlier appointments in 2208 come up regularly.
Several of the species we treat around Kingsgrove are polydomous - one colony spread across many nests. Treating the nest you found leaves the rest of it working, which is why we look for the extent before we choose a product.
Many ants get most of their sugar from honeydew - the secretion of aphids and scale insects they actively protect on garden plants. A Kingsgrove garden with a scale problem is feeding the ant colony that then comes indoors.
The reason the trail returns to the same spot in a Kingsgrove kitchen is that it is marked chemically. Wiping it buys hours. Treating the colony that maintains it is the only thing that ends it.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

The small glossy black one you find in the kitchen. It runs along skirtings, window frames and cabling, nesting in wall cavities, roof voids and the edges of garden beds, and it takes sweet bait without much persuading.

Tiny brown ants with a larger-headed soldier caste. The giveaway is loose sandy soil pushed up between pavers, along slab edges and in grout. Colonies are large with many nests, and oil-based granular baits work well.

Small, dull brown and fast-moving in thick trails. Nests hold many queens and connect with neighbouring nests, so infestations can stretch across several properties. Repellent sprays are especially counter-productive with this species.

Large ants, often active at night, that nest in soil, hollow trees and softened or damp timber. Unlike the notorious overseas species they are rarely a structural pest, but a nest in a wall often points to a leak worth fixing.

An Elite photo of ants emerging from mortar. The route runs through weep holes and cracked joints straight into the wall cavity, which is the usual home for a black house ant colony.

Photo from an Elite job: gel bait placed along an active trail. The ants are left to feed and carry the bait home, so we ask customers not to wipe or spray the trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
When they come in from the outside wall, the nest is usually in the cavity or just outside in the garden. We work back from the entry point.
Fine sand pushed up through paving, driveway and slab joints is coastal brown ants underneath, almost without exception.
They go into switches and appliances for the warmth. Keep insecticide out of power points and tell us, so it can be treated safely.
Swarms of winged ants in spring and summer are mating flights. Seen indoors, they can mean a mature colony inside the building.
Trails around the shower, vanity or toilet often mean moisture in the wall or a colony drinking from a slow leak.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in lawns and garden beds. Their stings hurt and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

The difference matters. Retail sprays are repellent - ants sense them and avoid the treated area. Non-repellent products cannot be detected, so foragers cross them, pick up the active and take it back to the nest.
If the bait is not what they want today, they will walk past it. Preference moves between sugar and protein with brood demand, so we test and change as needed.
It takes days for bait to move through a colony. Spraying the trail the day after our visit kills the very ants delivering it - our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We identify the ant and follow trails back to entry points and nests in walls, paving, garden edges and roof spaces.
Sweet, protein and oil-based baits are offered in small amounts so the colony shows us its current preference.
We run gel along the active trails, window frames and skirting, keeping every placement out of reach of children and animals.
Outside, a non-repellent goes around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths, so ants coming in pick it up on the way.
For nests beneath pavers and in lawn edges - typically coastal brown ants - we use granular bait or treat the nest directly.
Written summary, instructions on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty covering the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sweet liquids and honeydew; protein while the colony is raising young | Gel bait placed on trails, non-repellent applied at weep holes and window frames | Wiping trails clean daily, so the colony simply forages on a different route |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oils | Oil-based granular bait on paving and lawn edges | Pouring boiling water or insecticide into one pile while dozens of nests remain |
| Argentine ant | Sugars, with protein at times | Slow-acting baits plus non-repellent treatment across the property line | Repellent barrier sprays, which split multi-queen nests |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, foraging after dark | Inspecting trails at night, baiting close to the nest, and fixing damp timber | Working only in daylight hours, when these ants are not out |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Outdoor feeders on insects and nectar | Direct treatment of the nest in the lawn or garden bed | Opening the nest up by hand and being stung for it |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies come out of winter and begin raising brood, which pushes protein demand up | The first indoor trails of the season, and sand reappearing between pavers |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak foraging, mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants, heavy trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | The colony is at its largest and laying in stores before winter | Trails running into pantries and to pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor foraging slows right down while nests in heated walls continue | Ants showing up by heaters, hot water services and in kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Our Kingsgrove runs take in Rainbow Lorikeet Reserve and continue across to the Bexley North boundary - all the same service area.
If your Kingsgrove paving keeps developing little sand volcanoes, sweeping them away is treating the spoil rather than the nest. The colony is in the bedding sand under the slab.
Food premises need bait placement that will not contaminate, and records of what was used where. That is a different job from a domestic callout.
Trails are traced to the colony, not just sprayed where you saw them.
Which bait we use depends on the ant and the season: sweet, protein or oil-based.
We use non-repellents the foragers carry back, not sprays that split the colony up.
If ants return within 6 months of a general treatment, we return at no charge.

Same-day attendance is usually available. Kingsgrove is about 12.7 km south-west of the CBD in the Canterbury-Bankstown, and we give you a firm arrival time rather than an all-day window.
These houses were built joined together, and they have aged that way. Party walls, continuous roof voids and shared drainage give ants a route your front door has no bearing on.
Terraces, semis and converted blocks, which share structure - so we check what adjoins the property rather than treating it as a standalone building.
We do all of those. A good share of the Kingsgrove jobs we run are tenanted or strata properties, so the written record comes as standard.
Yes, when it is applied properly. We use registered products at label rates and tell you which areas to keep clear and for how long. Mention pets, fish tanks or allergies when you book.
You do not normally need to leave. Anything requiring an empty room is short, and you will know about it before the work starts.
Between one and two hours covers the majority of jobs. We do not book so tightly that a technician has to cut a job short.
