Budding splits the colony
A repellent does not kill a multi-queen colony, it divides it. A queen and several hundred workers shift to a new site, leaving you with two nests instead of one.
Ant Control in Lilyfield 2040 — local technicians, fixed prices and a written report. Ant treatment starts from $89.

Where Lilyfield sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Our Inner West technicians cover Lilyfield and the rest of 2040 as a matter of course - it is only about 4.2 km west of the city. Our technicians are through Lilyfield most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
Most weeks we are somewhere between Leichhardt Oval and Norton Plaza in Lilyfield, and Lilyfield station is close enough to be on the same run.
Under Inner West, Burwood, Strathfield and Canada Bay, we cover Lilyfield and Annandale, Rozelle and Leichhardt alike. The building stock is close-packed, so we look at what the property adjoins before deciding where product goes.
What we see in Lilyfield is older semis with a paved rear courtyard and a sub-floor that no longer dries out. Describing it accurately when you book saves a second visit.
We also work the area near Ryan Street Reserve, and the rest of 2040 with it.
Bookings for 2040 are confirmed the day before with a set arrival time, not an all-day window. Jobs at Annandale and Rozelle often share the same run, which is how earlier slots come up.
What you are looking at is a supply line, not a population. Treat the line and the colony sends another one tomorrow along a slightly different route.
If there are ants running up a shrub beside a Lilyfield house, look for scale or aphids on it. They are farming, and that food source is what sustains the colony.
Pharaoh and some other small species nest indoors in warm voids and never go outside at all. In a Lilyfield house that changes the treatment completely - and makes spraying actively harmful, because it buds the colony.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Tiny and brown, with a distinct large-headed soldier. The sign is loose sand appearing between pavers, along the slab edge and in grout lines. Many nests to a colony, which is why we use oil-based granular baits.

Small and flat brown in colour, running in dense fast trails. Because nests hold many queens and join with those next door, the infestation is usually bigger than one property. Never spray a repellent on it.

These are the large night-active ants that nest in soil, hollow trees and timber that has softened with damp. Structural damage is uncommon in Australia, but a wall nest points to a leak worth chasing.

An Elite job photo showing a nest in masonry. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead into the wall cavity - the spot black house ants most often choose.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail coming in from the external wall normally means a nest in the cavity or at the garden edge, and that entry point is where the tracing begins.
Fine sand pushed up through paving, driveway and slab joints is coastal brown ants underneath, almost without exception.
Electrical fittings and switches stay warm, which is why ants nest in them. Do not spray into them; let us know and we will handle it properly.
Winged ants swarming in the warmer months are reproductives on a mating flight. Indoors, that can indicate an established colony within the structure.
Trails in the bathroom point to water in the wall or a slow leak the ants have found.
Bull and jumper ants live in lawn and garden-bed nests. The sting hurts, and for some people it brings on a serious allergic reaction.

The difference matters. Retail sprays are repellent - ants sense them and avoid the treated area. Non-repellent products cannot be detected, so foragers cross them, pick up the active and take it back to the nest.
If the bait is not what they want today, they will walk past it. Preference moves between sugar and protein with brood demand, so we test and change as needed.
Results come over days as the bait spreads. Spray the trail the next morning and you have killed the ants that were carrying it home. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We work out which ant it is and follow the trails back, which is what locates nests in wall cavities, under paving, along garden edges and in roof spaces.
We put out small quantities of sweet, protein and oil-based bait to see which the colony is actually taking today.
Gel is placed on the trails themselves - along window frames and skirting boards - and positioned out of reach of children and pets.
We treat the foundation line, weep holes, door frames and paths with a non-repellent so incoming ants carry it with them.
Under-paver and lawn-edge nests are handled with granular bait, or treated directly where that is better.
Written summary, instructions on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty covering the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sweet liquids and honeydew; protein while the colony is raising young | Gel bait placed on trails, non-repellent applied at weep holes and window frames | Wiping trails clean daily, so the colony simply forages on a different route |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein rather than sugars | Granular bait with an oil base, spread on paving and at the lawn edge | Boiling water down one hole - there are dozens of other nests |
| Argentine ant | Mainly sugars, protein at some points in the cycle | Slow-acting bait with a non-repellent treatment right across the boundary | Spraying a repellent barrier, which causes a multi-queen nest to bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, active after dark | Night trail inspection, baiting near the nest, and dealing with damp timber | Inspecting in daylight when the colony is not foraging |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Outdoor feeders on insects and nectar | Direct treatment of the nest in the lawn or garden bed | Opening the nest up by hand and being stung for it |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak foraging, mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants, heavy trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies reach full size and start stocking up ahead of the cold | Trails heading for the pantry and the pet food bowl |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor foraging slows right down while nests in heated walls continue | Ants showing up by heaters, hot water services and in kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
For a Lilyfield cafe or kitchen, ants are a compliance finding. We run a documented program with monitoring points and reports your auditor will accept rather than a one-off spray.
If your Lilyfield paving keeps developing little sand volcanoes, sweeping them away is treating the spoil rather than the nest. The colony is in the bedding sand under the slab.
A storm is the most reliable trigger for an indoor ant problem. Nests in soil and paving flood, and the colony relocates somewhere dry, meaning your building.
Trails are traced to the colony, not just sprayed where you saw them.
Sweet, protein or oil-based baits chosen for the ant and the season.
Nothing repellent, because that causes budding. Non-repellent products get carried home instead.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. We quote on the property rather than the postcode, so a unit in Lilyfield and a large house are priced differently. The figure is fixed before any work starts. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
At roughly 4.2 km west of the city, Lilyfield is on a route we run regularly. Same-day attendance is usually available. You will be given a time, not a window.
The housing stock is old and joined together. A shared wall cavity or a continuous sub-floor lets ants travel from one property to the next, which is why your neighbour matters.
Terraces, semis and converted blocks, which share structure - so we check what adjoins the property rather than treating it as a standalone building.
Yes. We work in houses, units, strata blocks, rentals and commercial premises across Lilyfield 2040, and we provide the written report agents and strata managers ask for.
Yes. The products are registered for this use and applied at label rates, and placement keeps them away from where children and animals go. Let us know at booking about pets, fish tanks or anyone with asthma and we will plan the visit around it.
Normally you can stay. Some treatments mean keeping out of a particular room briefly, and we will flag that when we arrive so you can plan around it.
Allow one to two hours for a typical Lilyfield property. Larger homes, or ones where the problem has spread, take longer and we will say so when we quote.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. Call us if activity picks up again and we will arrange the return visit.
Yes. As well as Lilyfield we cover Annandale, Rozelle, Leichhardt and Forest Lodge on the same runs, so a job that crosses a boundary can be handled in one visit.
