Budding splits the colony
Multi-queen species - Argentine ants and several house ants among them - react to a repellent by splitting. A queen and a few hundred workers relocate, and one colony becomes two.

What we cover in Maraylya, and how quickly we can get there.
We treat ants right across 2765. Maraylya is roughly 40.5 km north-west of the city, which puts it well inside the Hawkesbury & the Rural North-West run our technicians work. We travel out to Maraylya on planned runs through the Hawkesbury & the Rural North-West, so booking a day ahead gets you the best slot.
Much of our Maraylya work is in the streets around Scheyville National Park.
The suburb sits in the Hawkesbury area. Scheyville, Cattai and Pitt Town are all covered on the same day, so a problem that has spread across a boundary can be handled in one visit. With acreage the problem is often outside the house entirely - sheds, woodpiles and outbuildings get inspected too.
Maraylya jobs tend to be larger blocks where the shed or the woodpile turns out to be the source. Let us know which when you ring and we will plan the visit around it.
All of 2765 falls inside the area we service.
Bookings for 2765 are confirmed the day before with a set arrival time, not an all-day window. Jobs at Scheyville and Cattai often share the same run, which is how earlier slots come up.
Ants will defend aphids and scale from predators because that honeydew is their sugar supply. Deal with the scale on the plants near the house and the ant pressure drops with it.
Coastal brown ants, black house ants and odorous house ants all behave differently and all turn up around Maraylya. We identify before we bait rather than putting down a general-purpose product and hoping.
People assume a trail means something was left out. Around Maraylya it is just as likely to be the bathroom, because water is the scarcer resource in summer.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

Large ants that come out at night and nest in soil, hollow trees or damp timber. Unlike the overseas carpenter ants they seldom threaten structure - but a nest in a wall tells you there is moisture there.

From an Elite job - a nest coming out of a mortar joint. Cracked mortar and weep holes open directly into the wall cavity, and that cavity is where a lot of black house ant colonies sit.

An Elite photo of gel bait on an active trail. The whole point is letting them feed and take it home, so the trail must be left alone once we have treated it.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
Ants arriving from the outside wall usually nest in the cavity or garden edge. The entry point is where we start tracing.
Fine sand pushed up through paving, driveway and slab joints is coastal brown ants underneath, almost without exception.
Ants nesting in switches and electrical fittings are drawn to the warmth. Do not spray into power points; tell us so we can treat safely.
Swarms of winged ants in spring and summer are mating flights. Seen indoors, they can mean a mature colony inside the building.
Trails in the bathroom point to water in the wall or a slow leak the ants have found.
These are the bull ants and jumper ants nesting in lawns and beds - a painful sting, and a risk of serious allergic reaction for some.

Multi-queen species - Argentine ants and several house ants among them - react to a repellent by splitting. A queen and a few hundred workers relocate, and one colony becomes two.
The difference matters. Retail sprays are repellent - ants sense them and avoid the treated area. Non-repellent products cannot be detected, so foragers cross them, pick up the active and take it back to the nest.
A colony only takes bait if it wants that food at that moment. Ants switch between sugar and protein as their brood needs change, so we test preferences and change baits when needed.
A bait program works over days. The worst thing you can do is spray the trail once we have gone - those ants are the delivery system. See our blog on budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Identification comes first. Then we trace the trails to the entry points and the nests themselves, whether those are in walls, paving, garden edges or the roof.
Before committing, we offer a little of each bait type and let the colony tell us which one it is on.
Gel bait goes along trails, window frames and skirting where ants travel, out of reach of children and pets.
We treat the foundation line, weep holes, door frames and paths with a non-repellent so incoming ants carry it with them.
Under-paver and lawn-edge nests are handled with granular bait, or treated directly where that is better.
Written summary, instructions on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty covering the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Honeydew and sugary liquids, switching to protein when there is brood | Sweet gel on active trails and a non-repellent perimeter at frames and weep holes | Washing the trail down each day, which only relocates the foraging route |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oily foods | Oil-based granular bait over paving and lawn margins | Attacking a single visible nest while the rest of the colony's nests carry on |
| Argentine ant | Sugars, with protein at times | Slow-acting baits plus non-repellent treatment across the property line | Repellent barrier sprays, which split multi-queen nests |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Outdoor feeders on insects and nectar | Direct treatment of the nest in the lawn or garden bed | Opening the nest up by hand and being stung for it |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak foraging, mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants, heavy trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies peak in size and stock up for the cooler months | Trails into the pantry and around pet bowls |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Little happening outdoors, but a nest in a heated wall stays active | Activity around heaters, the hot water unit and kitchen areas |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
For a Maraylya cafe or kitchen, ants are a compliance finding. We run a documented program with monitoring points and reports your auditor will accept rather than a one-off spray.
Ants in the cavity of a Maraylya house will appear at power points, architraves and ceiling roses - anywhere the cavity opens into the room.
Winter does not kill the colony, it just slows it. The nest under a Maraylya path in July is the same nest that produces the trail in October.
Trails are traced to the colony, not just sprayed where you saw them.
Baits are matched to the species and the season rather than used as a default.
Sprays that scatter a colony are avoided entirely in favour of non-repellents the ants deliver themselves.
General ant treatments are covered. If ants come back within 6 months, so do we.
