Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

Where Middle Cove sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Postcode 2068 covers Middle Cove and the streets immediately around it. At about 8.3 km north of the CBD it falls in the Lower North Shore, where we have vans out daily. Our technicians are through Middle Cove most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
The Middle Cove addresses we attend cluster around Northbridge Plaza and Roseville Golf Course. Cawarrah Park is another part of the suburb we are called to often.
We work under the North Sydney, Mosman, Willoughby, Lane Cove and Hunters Hill area here, and Willoughby East, Castle Cove and Castlecrag are all on the same route, which matters when ant problems are moving between adjoining properties. Period homes near the harbour tend to have sub-floors, original timber and gardens running down to the boundary, so the inspection covers well beyond the kitchen.
Middle Cove jobs tend to be waterfront and near-waterfront homes with damp sub-floors and mature gardens. Let us know which when you ring and we will plan the visit around it.
Our Middle Cove runs also take in Harold Reid Reserve and the area near Flat Rock Beach, so the whole postcode is served.
The 2068 run is set the day before and you are given an arrival time. Where Willoughby East and Castle Cove fall on the same round, we can usually bring the visit forward.
People assume a trail means something was left out. Around Middle Cove it is just as likely to be the bathroom, because water is the scarcer resource in summer.
A colony's preference also shifts with the season. Spring brood-rearing wants protein; later in summer the same Middle Cove colony wants sugars.
Many ants get most of their sugar from honeydew - the secretion of aphids and scale insects they actively protect on garden plants. A Middle Cove garden with a scale problem is feeding the ant colony that then comes indoors.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small, shiny and black, and one of the most common kitchen ants in Sydney. It trails along skirting boards, window frames and power cables, and nests in wall voids, roof spaces and garden edges. It readily takes sweet baits.

Minute brown ants with larger-headed soldiers among them. Fine sand in paving joints, at slab edges and in grout is the tell. Because a colony holds many nests, oil-based granular baits are the right approach.

Small, dull brown and fast-moving in thick trails. Nests hold many queens and connect with neighbouring nests, so infestations can stretch across several properties. Repellent sprays are especially counter-productive with this species.

Large and mostly nocturnal, nesting in soil, hollow trees and damp or softened timber. They rarely damage structure here, though a nest inside a wall is a reliable sign of moisture that needs attention.

Photo from an Elite job: an ant nest emerging from a mortar joint. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead straight into the wall cavity, which is where many black house ant colonies live.

From an Elite job - gel bait set down on a live trail. The ants feed and carry it back to the nest, which is why we ask you not to wipe or spray that trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail coming in from the external wall normally means a nest in the cavity or at the garden edge, and that entry point is where the tracing begins.
Fine soil pushed up along paving, driveways and slab joints is the classic sign of coastal brown ants nesting underneath.
Ants nesting in switches and electrical fittings are drawn to the warmth. Do not spray into power points; tell us so we can treat safely.
Mating flights produce the winged swarms you see in spring and summer. Finding them indoors suggests a mature colony inside rather than outside.
Ant trails at the shower, vanity or toilet usually come down to moisture - either damp in the wall or a slow leak they are drinking from.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in lawns and garden beds. Their stings hurt and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.
The difference matters. Retail sprays are repellent - ants sense them and avoid the treated area. Non-repellent products cannot be detected, so foragers cross them, pick up the active and take it back to the nest.
Ants will ignore bait that does not suit their current needs. Because they alternate between sugar and protein depending on the brood, we test preference rather than assume.
It takes days for bait to move through a colony. Spraying the trail the day after our visit kills the very ants delivering it - our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We work out which ant it is and follow the trails back, which is what locates nests in wall cavities, under paving, along garden edges and in roof spaces.
We put out small quantities of sweet, protein and oil-based bait to see which the colony is actually taking today.
Gel bait goes along trails, window frames and skirting where ants travel, out of reach of children and pets.
The perimeter gets a non-repellent product - foundation, weep holes, door frames, paths - which intercepts ants before they are inside.
Under-paver and lawn-edge nests are handled with granular bait, or treated directly where that is better.
A written summary, clear advice on what not to spray afterwards, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Mostly sweet liquids and honeydew, with protein demand during brood rearing | Gel bait along the trail, plus non-repellent treatment to weep holes and door frames | Daily detergent wiping of trails - it moves the foraging rather than stopping it |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oily foods | Oil-based granular bait over paving and lawn margins | Attacking a single visible nest while the rest of the colony's nests carry on |
| Argentine ant | Sugar for the most part, with periodic protein demand | Slow baits and a non-repellent applied along the property line | Using a repellent barrier spray - it divides the multi-queen colony |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Insects and nectar, always outside | The nest itself is treated directly, in lawn or garden bed | Hand-digging a nest, which reliably ends in stings |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak activity, with swarming flights triggered by warm humid conditions | Flying ants, and trails that thicken noticeably after storms and heat |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outside activity drops away, though nests in warm wall cavities carry on | Ants near heaters, hot water units and in the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Fine soil pushed up along paving joints, path edges and garden edging is excavation - there is a nest directly beneath. Around Middle Cove that is coastal brown ants more often than not.
A branch touching the roof is a bridge. Mulch banked against brickwork is harbourage. Most of what brings ants inside a Middle Cove home is in the garden immediately around it.
Activity climbs from early spring as colonies start brood-rearing, peaks through the hot months and tails off in autumn. Treating in early spring around Middle Cove gets ahead of it rather than chasing it.
Trails lead somewhere, so we follow them to the colony instead of spraying the sighting.
Which bait we use depends on the ant and the season: sweet, protein or oil-based.
Non-repellent products that foragers carry home, instead of sprays that scatter the colony.
General treatments come with 6 months. Ants back within that window means we come back too.

Same-day attendance is usually available. We are about 8.3 km north of the city here, and Middle Cove is covered by the Lower North Shore team.
The combination here is age and moisture. Older houses near the harbour rarely have sub-floor ventilation that still works, and ants settle in what that leaves behind.
Older houses and converted blocks, frequently on a slope with a lower level cut into it - which is where we usually start.

Normally you can stay. Some treatments mean keeping out of a particular room briefly, and we will flag that when we arrive so you can plan around it.
Typically one to two hours on site. What extends it is size, access and how far the problem has gone, all of which are accounted for in the quote.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. A return visit inside that period does not cost you anything.
We do. Middle Cove and Willoughby East, Castle Cove, Castlecrag and Willoughby are all on the same route, which helps if you own more than one property in the area.
