Budding splits the colony
A repellent does not kill a multi-queen colony, it divides it. A queen and several hundred workers shift to a new site, leaving you with two nests instead of one.

Where Rydalmere sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Our Greater Parramatta & Cumberland technicians cover Rydalmere and the rest of 2116 as a matter of course - it is only about 17 km west of the city. We run Rydalmere on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
Around Rydalmere we work the pockets near Yallamundi station, Dundas station and Rydalmere Park most often, so the van is rarely far away when a job comes in.
This is the City of Parramatta and Cumberland area, and our runs here also take in Camellia, Dundas and Telopea. Terraces, semis and converted blocks share cavities and risers, which is why a single-unit treatment often does not hold on its own.
The bulk of our Rydalmere work is apartments and converted blocks where the kitchen backs onto a service riser. Mention the detail when you call 1300 313 373 - it decides how long we need on site.
We cover the remainder of 2116 as well, from Hannibal Macarthur Park through to Rangihou Reserve.
Many ants get most of their sugar from honeydew - the secretion of aphids and scale insects they actively protect on garden plants. A Rydalmere garden with a scale problem is feeding the ant colony that then comes indoors.
People expect a single nest. Coastal brown ants and Argentine ants run dozens of connected nests across a property and beyond it, so the question is never just where it is but how far it goes.
The reason the trail returns to the same spot in a Rydalmere kitchen is that it is marked chemically. Wiping it buys hours. Treating the colony that maintains it is the only thing that ends it.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

The small glossy black one you find in the kitchen. It runs along skirtings, window frames and cabling, nesting in wall cavities, roof voids and the edges of garden beds, and it takes sweet bait without much persuading.

Minute brown ants with larger-headed soldiers among them. Fine sand in paving joints, at slab edges and in grout is the tell. Because a colony holds many nests, oil-based granular baits are the right approach.

Small, dull brown and fast-moving in thick trails. Nests hold many queens and connect with neighbouring nests, so infestations can stretch across several properties. Repellent sprays are especially counter-productive with this species.

These are the large night-active ants that nest in soil, hollow trees and timber that has softened with damp. Structural damage is uncommon in Australia, but a wall nest points to a leak worth chasing.

Taken on an Elite job: a mortar joint with a nest behind it. Weep holes and failed mortar are a direct path into the cavity, where many black house ant colonies establish.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
Ants arriving from the outside wall usually nest in the cavity or garden edge. The entry point is where we start tracing.
That fine sandy soil appearing between pavers, along the driveway and at slab joints is the classic coastal brown ant sign - they are nesting below.
They go into switches and appliances for the warmth. Keep insecticide out of power points and tell us, so it can be treated safely.
Swarming winged ants in spring or summer are a mating flight. Seen inside the house, it often means the colony is mature and in the building.
Trails around the shower, vanity or toilet often mean moisture in the wall or a colony drinking from a slow leak.
Lawns and garden beds are where bull ants and jumper ants nest. Their stings are painful and can trigger severe allergic reactions.

A repellent does not kill a multi-queen colony, it divides it. A queen and several hundred workers shift to a new site, leaving you with two nests instead of one.
Repellent means detectable, and detectable means avoided. Non-repellent products let foragers walk through and transfer the active to the rest of the nest.
A colony's appetite shifts between sugar and protein with the brood cycle. Bait only works when it matches, which is why we test preferences on site.
It takes days for bait to move through a colony. Spraying the trail the day after our visit kills the very ants delivering it.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We identify the ant and follow trails back to entry points and nests in walls, paving, garden edges and roof spaces.
Sweet, protein and oil-based baits are offered in small amounts so the colony shows us its current preference.
We run gel along the active trails, window frames and skirting, keeping every placement out of reach of children and animals.
A non-repellent treatment around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths intercepts ants coming in.
For nests beneath pavers and in lawn edges - typically coastal brown ants - we use granular bait or treat the nest directly.
The job ends with a written summary, advice on what to avoid spraying, and a 6-month warranty.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Honeydew and sugary liquids, switching to protein when there is brood | Sweet gel on active trails and a non-repellent perimeter at frames and weep holes | Washing the trail down each day, which only relocates the foraging route |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein rather than sugars | Granular bait with an oil base, spread on paving and at the lawn edge | Boiling water down one hole - there are dozens of other nests |
| Argentine ant | Chiefly sugars, with protein at intervals | Slow-release baits plus a non-repellent treatment along the property line | Repellent sprays at the boundary, which make a multi-queen colony bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Insects and nectar outdoors | Direct nest treatment in lawns and garden beds | Digging into the nest by hand and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies wake up and start raising new brood, so protein demand rises | First trails indoors, sand piles reappearing in paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging at its height, and mating flights whenever it turns warm and humid | Winged ants indoors, and much heavier trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Full colony size, and foraging to build stores before it cools | Pantry trails, and ants on the pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Quiet outside, but colonies in warm wall cavities keep working | Ants around the heater, the hot water unit and the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
The garden is usually the source. Shrubs touching the walls, mulch up against the footings and irrigated beds give a colony everything it needs within a metre of your kitchen.
For a Rydalmere cafe or kitchen, ants are a compliance finding. We run a documented program with monitoring points and reports your auditor will accept rather than a one-off spray.
If your Rydalmere paving keeps developing little sand volcanoes, sweeping them away is treating the spoil rather than the nest. The colony is in the bedding sand under the slab.
Finding the nest is the job - following the trail to it, not treating the visible end of it.
Sweet, protein or oil-based baits chosen for the ant and the season.
We use non-repellents the foragers carry back, not sprays that split the colony up.
General ant treatments are covered. If ants come back within 6 months, so do we.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. Two things move it: how big the place is, and how far it has already spread. We work that out on the phone or on site and tell you the figure before anything starts in Rydalmere. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. Our Greater Parramatta & Cumberland technicians cover Rydalmere daily, and you get a confirmed arrival time when you book.
The housing stock is old and joined together. A shared wall cavity or a continuous sub-floor lets ants travel from one property to the next, which is why your neighbour matters.
Terraces, semis and converted blocks, which share structure - so we check what adjoins the property rather than treating it as a standalone building.
We do. A lot of our Rydalmere work is rentals and strata, so the report, the products used and the areas treated are all recorded in writing for whoever needs them.
Yes. Everything we use is registered for the purpose and applied at label rates, and we place product where people and animals do not go. Tell us about pets, aquariums or anyone with a respiratory condition at booking.
Normally you can stay. Some treatments mean keeping out of a particular room briefly, and we will flag that when we arrive so you can plan around it.
Allow one to two hours for a typical Rydalmere property. Larger homes, or ones where the problem has spread, take longer and we will say so when we quote.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. A return visit inside that period does not cost you anything.
We do. Rydalmere and Camellia, Dundas, Telopea and Rosehill are all on the same route, which helps if you own more than one property in the area.
