Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

Where Wedderburn sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Postcode 2560 covers Wedderburn and the streets immediately around it. At about 46.1 km south-west of the CBD it falls in the Macarthur, where we have vans out daily. We travel out to Wedderburn on planned runs through the Macarthur, so booking a day ahead gets you the best slot.
Around Wedderburn we are most often working near Denfield Green.
This is the Campbelltown and Camden area, and our runs here also take in St Helens Park, Gilead and Rosemeadow. Estate blocks are compact with narrow side passages, so access and the perimeter are where most of the work happens.
The bulk of our Wedderburn work is estate houses with narrow side access and a shared fence line. Mention the detail when you call 1300 313 373 - it decides how long we need on site.
Every part of 2560 is covered as standard.
We confirm your slot the day before and arrive at a stated time. St Helens Park and Gilead sit on the same run, so earlier appointments in 2560 come up regularly.
If there are ants running up a shrub beside a Wedderburn house, look for scale or aphids on it. They are farming, and that food source is what sustains the colony.
Several of the species we treat around Wedderburn are polydomous - one colony spread across many nests. Treating the nest you found leaves the rest of it working, which is why we look for the extent before we choose a product.
Ants lay a pheromone trail that other workers follow, which is why the line is so precise and why it reappears in exactly the same place after you wipe it. Cleaning a Wedderburn kitchen removes the smell for a few hours, not the colony that laid it.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Shiny, black and small - Sydney's most common indoor ant. Trails follow skirting boards, window frames and power cables back to nests in wall voids, roof spaces or garden edges. Sweet baits work well on it.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

Fast-moving, small and dull brown, in thick trails. Its nests are multi-queen and interconnected with neighbouring nests, so it spreads across properties - and repellent sprays accelerate exactly that.

Large ants, often active at night, that nest in soil, hollow trees and softened or damp timber. Unlike the notorious overseas species they are rarely a structural pest, but a nest in a wall often points to a leak worth fixing.

Taken on an Elite job: a mortar joint with a nest behind it. Weep holes and failed mortar are a direct path into the cavity, where many black house ant colonies establish.

An Elite photo of gel bait on an active trail. The whole point is letting them feed and take it home, so the trail must be left alone once we have treated it.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
Fine sand pushed up through paving, driveway and slab joints is coastal brown ants underneath, almost without exception.
A nest in a power point or appliance is about warmth. Spraying into electrical fittings is dangerous - tell us and we will treat it the right way.
Mating flights produce the winged swarms you see in spring and summer. Finding them indoors suggests a mature colony inside rather than outside.
Ant trails at the shower, vanity or toilet usually come down to moisture - either damp in the wall or a slow leak they are drinking from.
Lawns and garden beds are where bull ants and jumper ants nest. Their stings are painful and can trigger severe allergic reactions.

The difference matters. Retail sprays are repellent - ants sense them and avoid the treated area. Non-repellent products cannot be detected, so foragers cross them, pick up the active and take it back to the nest.
Ants will ignore bait that does not suit their current needs. Because they alternate between sugar and protein depending on the brood, we test preference rather than assume.
Results come over days as the bait spreads. Spray the trail the next morning and you have killed the ants that were carrying it home. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Species confirmed, then trails traced to entry points and to the nests - walls, paving, garden edges, roof space.
Sweet, protein and oil-based baits are offered in small amounts so the colony shows us its current preference.
Gel bait goes along trails, window frames and skirting where ants travel, out of reach of children and pets.
Outside, a non-repellent goes around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths, so ants coming in pick it up on the way.
For nests beneath pavers and in lawn edges - typically coastal brown ants - we use granular bait or treat the nest directly.
You receive the job summary in writing, guidance on what to leave alone, and 6 months of warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sweet liquids and honeydew; protein while the colony is raising young | Gel bait placed on trails, non-repellent applied at weep holes and window frames | Wiping trails clean daily, so the colony simply forages on a different route |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein rather than sugars | Granular bait with an oil base, spread on paving and at the lawn edge | Boiling water down one hole - there are dozens of other nests |
| Argentine ant | Sugar for the most part, with periodic protein demand | Slow baits and a non-repellent applied along the property line | Using a repellent barrier spray - it divides the multi-queen colony |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, active after dark | Night trail inspection, baiting near the nest, and dealing with damp timber | Inspecting in daylight when the colony is not foraging |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak foraging, mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants, heavy trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outside activity drops away, though nests in warm wall cavities carry on | Ants near heaters, hot water units and in the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Ants protecting aphids on a Wedderburn citrus or gardenia will keep that trail running all season. It is a garden problem presenting as a kitchen one.
Nests under paving are sheltered, warm and almost impossible to flood out. They need bait placed at the active entrances, not a hose.
A single trail across a Wedderburn prep bench during an inspection is enough to cause a problem. The program is built to prevent that rather than react to it.
We follow the trail back to the colony rather than treating the spot where you noticed it.
Which bait we use depends on the ant and the season: sweet, protein or oil-based.
Non-repellent products that foragers carry home, instead of sprays that scatter the colony.
General treatments come with 6 months. Ants back within that window means we come back too.

Newer estates put houses close together on small blocks, so ants that establish in one property turn up either side of it within a season.
Newer detached homes on compact blocks, so access down the side and the shared fence line shape how we work.
