Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

Our Penrith & the Outer West technicians cover Werrington County and the rest of 2747 as a matter of course - it is only about 44.7 km west of the city. We travel out to Werrington County on planned runs through the Penrith & the Outer West, so booking a day ahead gets you the best slot.
If you are near Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre, Dunheved Golf Club or Werrington station, that is ground we cover constantly - it is the busiest part of Werrington County for us.
We work under the Penrith City and Hawkesbury area here, and Cambridge Park, Werrington and Werrington Downs are all on the same route, which matters when ant problems are moving between adjoining properties. Bigger properties mean sheds, stables and stacked timber to check as well as the house.
Around Werrington County the pattern is fairly consistent: rural-residential homes where it started in a stable or a feed store. Tell us which it is on the phone and we will come prepared for it.
The whole of 2747 is covered, John Batman Reserve included.
When you book, we confirm the 2747 run the day before and give you an arrival time rather than a window. If we are already out at Cambridge Park or Werrington that morning, we will usually offer you the earlier slot.
Coastal brown ants, black house ants and odorous house ants all behave differently and all turn up around Werrington County. We identify before we bait rather than putting down a general-purpose product and hoping.
Ants in timber are a symptom. They do not create the damp, they move into timber the damp has already softened, so the leak matters more than the ants.
People assume a trail means something was left out. Around Werrington County it is just as likely to be the bathroom, because water is the scarcer resource in summer.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

A small black ant with a glossy body, and the one most often in Sydney kitchens. It nests in wall cavities, the roof void and garden edges, trails along skirtings and cabling, and feeds readily on sweet bait.

Tiny brown ants with a larger-headed soldier caste. The giveaway is loose sandy soil pushed up between pavers, along slab edges and in grout. Colonies are large with many nests, and oil-based granular baits work well.

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

Large and mostly nocturnal, nesting in soil, hollow trees and damp or softened timber. They rarely damage structure here, though a nest inside a wall is a reliable sign of moisture that needs attention.

From an Elite job - a nest coming out of a mortar joint. Cracked mortar and weep holes open directly into the wall cavity, and that cavity is where a lot of black house ant colonies sit.

From an Elite job - gel bait set down on a live trail. The ants feed and carry it back to the nest, which is why we ask you not to wipe or spray that trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
Fine soil pushed up along paving, driveways and slab joints is the classic sign of coastal brown ants nesting underneath.
They go into switches and appliances for the warmth. Keep insecticide out of power points and tell us, so it can be treated safely.
Swarms of winged ants in spring and summer are mating flights. Seen indoors, they can mean a mature colony inside the building.
Trails around the shower, vanity or toilet often mean moisture in the wall or a colony drinking from a slow leak.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in lawns and garden beds. Their stings hurt and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

Retail sprays repel: the ants know they are there and go round. Professional non-repellents do not register, so the foragers deliver the active to the colony for us.
Bait is only taken if it matches what the colony wants right now. Their preference moves between sugar and protein as the brood changes, so we test and switch baits accordingly.
Give it days, not hours. Bait has to be carried through the colony, and spraying the trail afterwards destroys the couriers doing that work. Our blog covers budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
First the species, then the trails - followed back to where they enter and to nests in the wall, under paving, at garden edges or in the roof space.
We put out small quantities of sweet, protein and oil-based bait to see which the colony is actually taking today.
Gel is placed on the trails themselves - along window frames and skirting boards - and positioned out of reach of children and pets.
A non-repellent band around the footings, weep holes, door frames and paths catches ants as they come in.
Granular bait or direct treatment for coastal brown ant nests under pavers and in lawn edges.
The job ends with a written summary, advice on what to avoid spraying, and a 6-month warranty.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Mostly sweet liquids and honeydew, with protein demand during brood rearing | Gel bait along the trail, plus non-repellent treatment to weep holes and door frames | Daily detergent wiping of trails - it moves the foraging rather than stopping it |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oily foods | Oil-based granular bait over paving and lawn margins | Attacking a single visible nest while the rest of the colony's nests carry on |
| Argentine ant | Chiefly sugars, with protein at intervals | Slow-release baits plus a non-repellent treatment along the property line | Repellent sprays at the boundary, which make a multi-queen colony bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Outdoor feeders on insects and nectar | Direct treatment of the nest in the lawn or garden bed | Opening the nest up by hand and being stung for it |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak activity, with swarming flights triggered by warm humid conditions | Flying ants, and trails that thicken noticeably after storms and heat |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies reach full size and start stocking up ahead of the cold | Trails heading for the pantry and the pet food bowl |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor activity slows, but nests in heated walls keep going | Ants around heaters, hot water units and kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Our Werrington County runs take in Dunheved Golf Club and continue across to the Cambridge Park boundary - all the same service area.
Honeydew is a sugar supply the colony will defend. We point out the plant on a Werrington County job because otherwise the trail simply re-establishes.
After sustained rain in Werrington County we get a run of calls, and the cause is consistent: shallow nests waterlogged, the colony moved into a wall cavity or subfloor to dry out.
We follow the trail back to the colony rather than treating the spot where you noticed it.
Baits are matched to the species and the season rather than used as a default.
We use non-repellents the foragers carry back, not sprays that split the colony up.
If ants return within 6 months of a general treatment, we return at no charge.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. We quote on the property rather than the postcode, so a unit in Werrington County and a large house are priced differently. The figure is fixed before any work starts. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
At roughly 44.7 km west of the city, Werrington County is on a route we run regularly. We cover it on scheduled runs, so a day's notice gets you the best slot. You will be given a time, not a window.
Acreage means more harbourage. Stacked timber, disused sheds and open ground all support ants populations that eventually work their way inward.
Large blocks where the shed, the feed store or the woodpile is as likely to be the problem as the house itself.
We do all of those. A good share of the Werrington County jobs we run are tenanted or strata properties, so the written record comes as standard.
Yes, when it is applied properly. We use registered products at label rates and tell you which areas to keep clear and for how long. Mention pets, fish tanks or allergies when you book.
In most cases you can stay. Where an area does need to be left clear it is for a couple of hours at most, and we say so before we start.
Usually between one and two hours on site. Bigger properties and heavier infestations take more, and that is included in the quote rather than added afterwards.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. If activity continues past the expected period, call us and we will come back.
We do. Werrington County and Cambridge Park, Werrington, Werrington Downs and Cambridge Gardens are all on the same route, which helps if you own more than one property in the area.
