Our Ryde & the Northern District technicians cover West Ryde and the rest of 2114 as a matter of course - it is only about 13.6 km north-west of the city. We run West Ryde on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
Most weeks we are somewhere between Village Plaza Shopping Centre and West Ryde station in West Ryde, and Denistone station is close enough to be on the same run.
We cover Denistone, Denistone West and Meadowbank on the same runs as West Ryde, which helps when ant problems are moving between neighbouring properties. Most of the housing here shares a wall, a roof void or a sub-floor with something else, so we check what adjoins the property rather than treating it in isolation.
West Ryde jobs tend to be apartments and converted blocks where the kitchen backs onto a service riser. Let us know which when you ring and we will plan the visit around it.
We also work the streets near Maze Park and across toward Darvall Park - the whole of 2114 is covered.
When you book, we confirm the 2114 run the day before and give you an arrival time rather than a window. If we are already out at Denistone or Denistone West that morning, we will usually offer you the earlier slot.
Many ants get most of their sugar from honeydew - the secretion of aphids and scale insects they actively protect on garden plants. A West Ryde garden with a scale problem is feeding the ant colony that then comes indoors.
Several of the species we treat around West Ryde are polydomous - one colony spread across many nests. Treating the nest you found leaves the rest of it working, which is why we look for the extent before we choose a product.
Pharaoh and some other small species nest indoors in warm voids and never go outside at all. In a West Ryde house that changes the treatment completely - and makes spraying actively harmful, because it buds the colony.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Shiny, black and small - Sydney's most common indoor ant. Trails follow skirting boards, window frames and power cables back to nests in wall voids, roof spaces or garden edges. Sweet baits work well on it.

Very small brown ants, with soldiers that have noticeably bigger heads. You spot them by the fine sandy soil pushed up through paving joints, slab edges and grout. The colonies are big and multi-nested, so oil-based granular bait is the tool.

Small, dull brown and fast-moving in thick trails. Nests hold many queens and connect with neighbouring nests, so infestations can stretch across several properties. Repellent sprays are especially counter-productive with this species.

Big ants, usually out after dark, nesting in soil, hollow trees and timber that has gone soft or damp. They are not the structural threat their overseas relatives are, but finding one in a wall usually means there is a leak behind it.

Photo from an Elite job: an ant nest emerging from a mortar joint. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead straight into the wall cavity, which is where many black house ant colonies live.

An Elite photo of gel bait on an active trail. The whole point is letting them feed and take it home, so the trail must be left alone once we have treated it.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
That fine sandy soil appearing between pavers, along the driveway and at slab joints is the classic coastal brown ant sign - they are nesting below.
Warmth is what draws them into switches and electrical fittings. Never spray into a power point - tell us instead and we will treat it safely.
Swarming winged ants in spring or summer are a mating flight. Seen inside the house, it often means the colony is mature and in the building.
Trails in the bathroom point to water in the wall or a slow leak the ants have found.
These are the bull ants and jumper ants nesting in lawns and beds - a painful sting, and a risk of serious allergic reaction for some.

Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.
The difference matters. Retail sprays are repellent - ants sense them and avoid the treated area. Non-repellent products cannot be detected, so foragers cross them, pick up the active and take it back to the nest.
If the bait is not what they want today, they will walk past it. Preference moves between sugar and protein with brood demand, so we test and change as needed.
A bait program works over days. The worst thing you can do is spray the trail once we have gone - those ants are the delivery system. See our blog on budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
First the species, then the trails - followed back to where they enter and to nests in the wall, under paving, at garden edges or in the roof space.
Sweet, protein and oil-based baits are offered in small amounts so the colony shows us its current preference.
Gel is placed on the trails themselves - along window frames and skirting boards - and positioned out of reach of children and pets.
Outside, a non-repellent goes around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths, so ants coming in pick it up on the way.
Coastal brown ant nests under paving and along lawn edges get granular bait or direct treatment.
The job ends with a written summary, advice on what to avoid spraying, and a 6-month warranty.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Honeydew and sugary liquids, switching to protein when there is brood | Sweet gel on active trails and a non-repellent perimeter at frames and weep holes | Washing the trail down each day, which only relocates the foraging route |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oily foods | Oil-based granular bait over paving and lawn margins | Attacking a single visible nest while the rest of the colony's nests carry on |
| Argentine ant | Chiefly sugars, with protein at intervals | Slow-release baits plus a non-repellent treatment along the property line | Repellent sprays at the boundary, which make a multi-queen colony bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, mostly at night | Night-time trail inspection, bait near the nest, fix moisture in timber | Treating only in daylight when the ants are not active |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies come out of winter and begin raising brood, which pushes protein demand up | The first indoor trails of the season, and sand reappearing between pavers |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging at its height, and mating flights whenever it turns warm and humid | Winged ants indoors, and much heavier trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Full colony size, and foraging to build stores before it cools | Pantry trails, and ants on the pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Quiet outside, but colonies in warm wall cavities keep working | Ants around the heater, the hot water unit and the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Heavy rain floods shallow nests, and the colony moves to the nearest dry cavity - which is usually a wall, a subfloor or under a slab. A sudden indoor trail in West Ryde after a storm is almost always this.
We are around West Ryde Marketplace most weeks and cover every street in 2114, including the ones off the main roads.
For a West Ryde cafe or kitchen, ants are a compliance finding. We run a documented program with monitoring points and reports your auditor will accept rather than a one-off spray.
We follow the trail back to the colony rather than treating the spot where you noticed it.
The bait is chosen for the species and the time of year - sweet, protein or oil-based.
Sprays that scatter a colony are avoided entirely in favour of non-repellents the ants deliver themselves.
Six months of warranty on a general ant treatment, and a return visit if they come back inside it.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. Two things move it: how big the place is, and how far it has already spread. We work that out on the phone or on site and tell you the figure before anything starts in West Ryde. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. West Ryde sits roughly 13.6 km north-west of the CBD, inside our Ryde & the Northern District run, so we book a time and keep to it.
Older inner suburbs combine shared structure with ageing drainage, and ants exploit both. Rear courtyards that have been paved over make it worse by trapping damp against the walls.
Terraces, semis and converted blocks, which share structure - so we check what adjoins the property rather than treating it as a standalone building.
We do. A lot of our West Ryde work is rentals and strata, so the report, the products used and the areas treated are all recorded in writing for whoever needs them.
It is, provided the instructions are followed. We will tell you what to keep clear of and for how long before we leave. Let us know about children, pets or fish tanks when you book.
You do not normally need to leave. Anything requiring an empty room is short, and you will know about it before the work starts.
Between one and two hours covers the majority of jobs. We do not book so tightly that a technician has to cut a job short.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. That is the point of the warranty - you do not pay twice for the same problem.
We cover the whole of West Ryde, from the streets around West Ryde Marketplace out to the suburb boundary and on into Denistone.
