Budding splits the colony
Multi-queen species - Argentine ants and several house ants among them - react to a repellent by splitting. A queen and a few hundred workers relocate, and one colony becomes two.

Our Penrith & the Outer West technicians cover Windsor and the rest of 2756 as a matter of course - it is only about 45.9 km north-west of the city. We travel out to Windsor on planned runs through the Penrith & the Outer West, so booking a day ahead gets you the best slot.
Around Windsor we work the pockets near Windsor station, Paine Park and Windsor Golf Course most often, so the van is rarely far away when a job comes in.
We work under the Penrith City and Hawkesbury area here, and Windsor Downs, Vineyard and Marsden Park are all on the same route, which matters when ant problems are moving between adjoining properties. With acreage the problem is often outside the house entirely - sheds, woodpiles and outbuildings get inspected too.
The ant calls we take from Windsor are mostly rural-residential homes where it started in a stable or a feed store. If yours is one of them, mention it when you ring 1300 313 373 - it changes what the technician brings.
Wherever you are in 2756, you are inside the area our technicians cover.
You get a confirmed time, not a window. We plan the 2756 run the day before, and if Windsor Downs or Vineyard is on the same round there is often an earlier slot going.
Indoor nests sit in wall cavities, behind splashbacks, under baths and in roof insulation. Finding them is most of the work on a Windsor job.
What you are looking at is a supply line, not a population. Treat the line and the colony sends another one tomorrow along a slightly different route.
Several of the species we treat around Windsor are polydomous - one colony spread across many nests. Treating the nest you found leaves the rest of it working, which is why we look for the extent before we choose a product.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small, shiny and black, and one of the most common kitchen ants in Sydney. It trails along skirting boards, window frames and power cables, and nests in wall voids, roof spaces and garden edges. It readily takes sweet baits.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

Fast-moving, small and dull brown, in thick trails. Its nests are multi-queen and interconnected with neighbouring nests, so it spreads across properties - and repellent sprays accelerate exactly that.

Large ants, often active at night, that nest in soil, hollow trees and softened or damp timber. Unlike the notorious overseas species they are rarely a structural pest, but a nest in a wall often points to a leak worth fixing.

Taken on an Elite job: a mortar joint with a nest behind it. Weep holes and failed mortar are a direct path into the cavity, where many black house ant colonies establish.

An Elite job photo: gel placed directly on an active trail. Leave it be - the ants feeding there are the ones delivering it to the colony.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
When they come in from the outside wall, the nest is usually in the cavity or just outside in the garden. We work back from the entry point.
Fine soil pushed up along paving, driveways and slab joints is the classic sign of coastal brown ants nesting underneath.
Warmth is what draws them into switches and electrical fittings. Never spray into a power point - tell us instead and we will treat it safely.
Winged ants swarming in the warmer months are reproductives on a mating flight. Indoors, that can indicate an established colony within the structure.
Trails in the bathroom point to water in the wall or a slow leak the ants have found.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in lawns and garden beds. Their stings hurt and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

Ants can detect a supermarket spray and will simply route around it. A professional non-repellent is undetectable, so they walk through it and carry the active home to the colony.
A colony's appetite shifts between sugar and protein with the brood cycle. Bait only works when it matches, which is why we test preferences on site.
Bait takes days to work through a colony. If you spray the trail the day after we leave, you kill the couriers. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Identification comes first. Then we trace the trails to the entry points and the nests themselves, whether those are in walls, paving, garden edges or the roof.
Sweet, protein and oil-based baits are offered in small amounts so the colony shows us its current preference.
Inside, gel bait follows the trails: window frames, skirting, the routes they already use, always placed where children and pets cannot get to it.
Outside, a non-repellent goes around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths, so ants coming in pick it up on the way.
Under-paver and lawn-edge nests are handled with granular bait, or treated directly where that is better.
The job ends with a written summary, advice on what to avoid spraying, and a 6-month warranty.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugars and honeydew, turning to protein while brood is being raised | Sweet gel on the trails themselves, with a non-repellent at weep holes and frames | Cleaning the trail off every day, which just sends them foraging somewhere else |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein rather than sugars | Granular bait with an oil base, spread on paving and at the lawn edge | Boiling water down one hole - there are dozens of other nests |
| Argentine ant | Mainly sugars, protein at some points in the cycle | Slow-acting bait with a non-repellent treatment right across the boundary | Spraying a repellent barrier, which causes a multi-queen nest to bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Insects and nectar, always outside | The nest itself is treated directly, in lawn or garden bed | Hand-digging a nest, which reliably ends in stings |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies come out of winter and begin raising brood, which pushes protein demand up | The first indoor trails of the season, and sand reappearing between pavers |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging peaks, and warm humid spells trigger mating flights | Swarms of winged ants, and heavy trails following storms or heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Quiet outside, but colonies in warm wall cavities keep working | Ants around the heater, the hot water unit and the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Food premises need bait placement that will not contaminate, and records of what was used where. That is a different job from a domestic callout.
Ants protecting aphids on a Windsor citrus or gardenia will keep that trail running all season. It is a garden problem presenting as a kitchen one.
A storm is the most reliable trigger for an indoor ant problem. Nests in soil and paving flood, and the colony relocates somewhere dry, meaning your building.
Trails lead somewhere, so we follow them to the colony instead of spraying the sighting.
Sweet, protein or oil-based, picked to suit the ant and the point in the season.
Non-repellent products that foragers carry home, instead of sprays that scatter the colony.
Six months of warranty on a general ant treatment, and a return visit if they come back inside it.
