The honest version: moths come back when the cause is left in place. What follows covers how to tell what you are dealing with, what a licensed technician will actually do about it, realistic Sydney prices, and the prevention that makes the result hold. Start by working out what you have
It helps to separate two things: what is making you call someone, and what is causing it. The visible moths are the first; the moisture, the gap or the food source behind them is the second, and only the second decides whether the result holds.
That is why an inspection comes before any product. It establishes the species, how far the population has spread, and which conditions on the property are sustaining it.
Key points
- Treat the source, not the sightings: the nest or harbourage is the target.
- A fixed quote should come before any work starts.
- Early action is consistently cheaper than waiting for certainty.
- Fix the conditions - moisture, food, entry points - or it returns.
If you want to see how the treatment is actually carried out, professional our pest control services walks through each stage.
What to look for
Catching this early is the difference between a routine treatment and an expensive one. These are the signs our technicians see most often in Sydney:
- Small moths flying out of a pantry when you move a packet.
- Larvae in a wardrobe corner, carpet edge or under a rarely moved rug.
- Irregular holes in wool, cashmere or felt stored out of use.
- Silken tubes or cases along a skirting behind stored clothing.
- Damage concentrated where fibres are soiled or where humidity is high.
One of these on its own may mean nothing. Two or more in the same area is worth a professional look, and it is better not to disturb the site before someone has seen it.
The rest of what we handle is set out under the full range of treatments we carry out.
Sydney's weather and moths
The seasonal split is worth knowing: pantry species follow the heat and peak in summer, while clothes moths work quietly year-round in a wardrobe. That is why pantry problems appear suddenly and textile damage appears all at once when the season changes.
None of it changes the method much, but it does change how urgent the booking is.
What happens on the day
Knowing the shape of the appointment makes it easier to plan around. A standard visit runs roughly like this:
- First look. Ten to twenty minutes looking - inside, outside, roof void or subfloor if relevant - then a plain explanation of what is going on.
- Agreeing the work. The figure is confirmed against what was actually found, and you decide from there.
- The work itself. Allow an hour to two hours. You do not need to leave for most general work.
- Before we leave. You get the timeline, the aftercare, the specific fixes for your property and your paperwork.
One thing worth knowing: with baiting and colony treatments, activity often rises briefly before it drops. That is the treatment working, not failing.
Honest pricing
Price depends on the property size, the species and how established the population is. These are the starting figures Elite Pest works to in 2026:
| Service | From | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial program | quoted per site | Scheduled servicing with documented reports |
| General pest treatment (internal & external) | from $89 | Covers cockroaches, ants, spiders and silverfish |
| Flea treatment (internal) | from $160 | Preparation and vacuuming required beforehand |
| Rodent treatment and proofing | from $150 | Baiting or trapping, plus entry-point work |
| Possum removal and proofing | from $250 | One-way exclusion, then sealing the entry |
The quote is confirmed before work begins and does not change unless you ask for more work. General pest treatments carry a six-month warranty.

DIY or call someone?
This is worth being straight about, because DIY is not always the wrong answer. It is the wrong answer once a population is established, for reasons that are fairly mechanical:
- Retail products kill what they touch and leave the nest or harbourage producing.
- Surface application misses the voids and cracks where the population actually lives.
- Without identification there is no way to know whether it is working or just scattering.
- Spraying over bait placements makes them unpalatable and wastes the treatment.
Where it crosses over is roughly when you have treated twice and it has come back, or when the species itself is a safety question.
If you are not certain which pest you are dealing with, everything we treat lists what we treat and the signs that point to each.
What not to do
Most of the difficult jobs we attend were straightforward a few weeks earlier. The usual reasons:
- Missing carpet edges and underlay beneath furniture.
- Discarding the obvious packet and leaving the rest of the shelf unchecked.
- Returning dry goods to the pantry in their original packaging.
- Relying on a repellent alone against an established population.
Mentioning what you have already applied saves time and avoids a product conflict.
Setting a few things straight
Some of these are harmless. Others actively cost people money, which is why they are worth correcting:
- Moths eat clothes. The larvae do the damage. Adults do not feed on fabric at all.
- Pantry moths come from the house. They almost always arrive inside purchased dry goods.
- Cedar or lavender will protect a wardrobe. They may deter adults slightly but will not stop an established population.
- Only dirty clothes are at risk. Soiling attracts larvae, but clean wool and cashmere are still eaten.
It is worth a look through the pest control services page, since what you are seeing may not be what you think it is.
Does your type of property change things?
Two neighbours with identical problems can get quite different treatments, and the reason is usually construction rather than preference:
- Freestanding houses. Full external access, subfloor and roof void available, so the source can usually be treated directly.
- Terraces and semis. Party walls and shared subfloors let populations travel; treating one side alone rarely holds.
- New builds. Tighter sealing helps, but landscaping against the slab and construction debris are common early problems.
- Apartments and units. Shared walls, services and risers mean the source is often outside your lot - partial treatment just moves it.
The recurring-problem-in-a-unit pattern almost always means the population is living in common property.
If you are in a unit rather than a house, unit and apartment treatments explains what can be treated inside your own lot.
Businesses, strata and shared buildings
Commercial and strata work carries requirements a domestic job does not:
- Coordination across multiple lots so the population cannot simply relocate.
- Written service reports an auditor or committee can follow.
- After-hours or pre-opening access so trading is not disrupted.
- Scheduled servicing rather than reactive call-outs, with visit dates set in advance.
- A site plan showing monitored station locations.
For a food business in particular, pest records are among the first things an inspector asks for - which makes the documentation as valuable as the treatment.
Where common property is involved, a building-wide strata program avoids the situation where each owner treats their own lot and the problem simply moves.
After the treatment
The warranty on general pest work runs six months. Covered pests returning in that time are re-treated free - no argument, no second call-out fee.
There are limits worth knowing rather than discovering later. The warranty covers the pests treated, not a new and different problem, and it assumes the prevention advice was followed - leaving an open food source or an unrepaired leak is outside it. Termite barriers and baiting systems carry their own separate terms, usually tied to annual monitoring.
Ask for it in writing. Any operator who will not put the warranty terms on the invoice is worth passing on.
Households that would rather not think about it tend to move to a scheduled home service, which catches problems at the point they are still small.
Common questions
How much does it cost to get rid of moths in Sydney?
General pest treatments start from $89 and timber pest inspections from $159. Termite treatments and barriers are quoted after an inspection because the price depends on the construction and the extent of the activity. You get a fixed figure before any work begins.
How do moths get into sealed cupboards?
In the shopping, usually. Pantry species are brought home in flour, rice, cereal or pet food and spread from there, which is why discarding only the obvious packet rarely works. Decanting into airtight containers is the single most effective change.
What attracts moths to a house?
Usually something fixable: an unsealed food source, standing water, mulch or timber against the wall, or a gap at a weep hole or pipe penetration. A technician will point out which apply to your property.
Who pays in a rental or strata building?
In a tenancy it usually depends on whether the problem existed at the start of the lease and on the terms of the agreement - raise it with the agent in writing either way. In a strata building, anything in common property such as risers, voids and bin rooms is the owners corporation's responsibility.
Will a supermarket spray work?
If you have treated it once and it came back, that is the signal to call someone rather than to try again. Tell the technician what you have already applied - it affects which products can be used next.
Can you come today?
We cover Sydney regularly, so availability is normally a day or two out. Call 1300 313 373 and we will give you the next slot and a fixed price at the same time.
How long before the treatment works?
For a general treatment you should see a drop within 24 to 72 hours. Where baiting is used it takes one to three weeks, because the aim is the colony rather than the foragers. A short increase in sightings early on means the bait is being taken.
Are your technicians licensed and insured?
Licensed and insured, and happy to show either. If you are comparing quotes, ask each company for the licence number of the person actually attending rather than just the business name.
