The short answer

Yes - professional pest control is safe around children and pets when it is applied correctly. Elite Pest uses APVMA-registered, low-toxicity products at label rates, and places baits and dusts in cracks, voids and stations rather than on open surfaces. You are told the exact re-entry time on the day; usually it is just staying off treated surfaces until dry.

The part most people get wrong

The useful question is not which spray to buy but where the population actually lives. With pests, what you see moving is a small fraction of what is there, and treating only that fraction is why problems come back.

So the sequence matters: identify, locate, treat the source, then close the conditions. Skip a step and you are paying again within weeks.

Key points

  • Fix the conditions - moisture, food, entry points - or it returns.
  • Identify the species before treating - the right product depends on it.
  • Treat the source, not the sightings: the nest or harbourage is the target.
  • Early action is consistently cheaper than waiting for certainty.

If you want to see how the treatment is actually carried out, the our full range of pest control services page walks through each stage.

What to look for

Before numbers become obvious there is almost always a quieter stage. What to look for:

  • Droppings, smear marks or shed skins in cupboards and along skirtings.
  • Trails or runways repeated along the same route day after day.
  • Noises in a wall or roof space that follow a nightly pattern.
  • Damage to packaging, timber, fabric or cabling with no other explanation.
  • An unexplained musty, oily or ammonia-like smell in a closed space.

One of these on its own may mean nothing. Two or more in the same area is worth a professional look, and it is better not to disturb the site before someone has seen it.

It is worth a look through the services we offer across Sydney, since what you are seeing may not be what you think it is.

The conditions behind it

There is almost always something on the property doing the inviting. Most commonly:

  • Vegetation, mulch and timber in direct contact with the building.
  • Warm, humid Sydney weather accelerating breeding cycles.
  • Moisture from leaks, poor drainage or blocked gutters.
  • Neighbouring work or vacancy displacing an established population.
  • Accessible food in bins, pantries, compost and pet bowls.

A technician will walk you through whichever of these apply to your place as part of the visit.

The seasonal pattern

Sydney's pest calendar is reasonably predictable. Spring and summer bring ants, spiders, mosquitoes, wasps and cockroaches as warmth and humidity shorten breeding cycles; autumn pushes rodents and possums indoors; winter concentrates activity around warmth and moisture inside the building. Termites and bed bugs run year-round.

None of it changes the method much, but it does change how urgent the booking is.

The process, step by step

The work is more methodical than most people expect, and very little of it involves a spray wand. The sequence:

  1. Inspect and identify. Work out the species and find where the population actually sits - usually not where it was seen.
  2. Treat the source. Use the method the species responds to, placed where the population lives rather than where it was seen.
  3. Allow the method to run. Colony treatments take time by design. The technician will say how long before you should expect a change.
  4. Close the conditions. The gaps to seal, the moisture to fix and the habits to change - this is what makes the result last.

Every Elite Pest treatment is carried out by a licensed, insured technician and general pest work carries a 6-month warranty.

The method itself, product by product, is explained on our page about our full range of pest control services.

What to expect from the visit

There is not much mystery to it, and most of it is quicker than people expect:

  1. Arrival and walk-through. The technician inspects inside and out, confirms the species and shows you what they have found before anything is applied.
  2. Confirming the quote. No work starts until you have agreed the price and know what it covers.
  3. Application. Most general treatments take 45 to 90 minutes depending on the property size and how much access is involved.
  4. What you are told. A clear explanation of what happens next, so an increase in activity a few days later does not alarm you.

Expect a short increase in sightings after a bait treatment. It means the bait is being carried, which is the point.

Safety around the family

Fair question, and worth more than a one-word answer. Professional treatment is safe around families and pets because of how it is applied, not because the products are inert:

  • Products are APVMA-registered and applied at label rates by a licensed technician.
  • Nothing is applied to food preparation surfaces or anywhere food is stored.
  • Quantities are measured to the area rather than applied until the bottle is empty.
  • Baits, gels and dusts go into cracks, voids and secured stations - not across open surfaces.

We would rather adjust the approach than have you worry about it afterwards, so raise it on the phone.

Anyone you let into your home for this work should be licensed and insured, and who actually turns up sets out ours.

What people believe that is not true

The received wisdom on this is unusually wrong:

  • DIY is cheaper. It is cheaper only when it works. Repeated failed attempts usually cost more than one correct treatment.
  • Pests mean an unclean home. Many arrive in deliveries, furniture or shared walls, or follow moisture rather than mess.
  • If you cannot see them, they are gone. Most pest populations are mostly hidden. Visible insects are a fraction of the whole.
  • One treatment should fix anything. Baits, colony treatments and egg-laying cycles all need time and sometimes a follow-up.

If you are not certain which pest you are dealing with, the pest control services page lists what we treat and the signs that point to each.

What counts as an emergency

Some of this can wait a fortnight. Some of it cannot. The dividing line:

  • You have found live termite activity in or against the building.
  • Anyone in the household has a known allergy to stings.
  • There are young children or pets with access to the affected area.
  • Numbers have visibly increased over a week or two.

If none of those apply, there is no need to panic - but there is also no advantage in waiting, since populations keep breeding either way.

If your suburb is not mentioned above, our full service area will confirm whether we are out that way.

Warranty and follow-up

The warranty on general pest work runs six months. Covered pests returning in that time are re-treated free - no argument, no second call-out fee.

What it does not cover: a different species arriving later, a re-introduction you bring in yourself, or a recurrence driven by an unaddressed cause such as a leak or a gap we flagged. Termite work is warranted separately, with terms linked to ongoing inspection.

You should receive the terms with your paperwork on the day rather than having to request them.

Most of the homes we look after are on a scheduled home service rather than calling when something appears.

Stopping it coming back

Treatment resets the problem. Prevention is what keeps it solved, and most of it is maintenance rather than pest control:

  • Keep records, which matters most at commercial and strata sites.
  • Act on early signs rather than waiting for the problem to be obvious.
  • Remove the food: sealed storage, clean surfaces, lidded bins, no overnight pet bowls.
  • Stay on a schedule so problems are caught before they establish.
  • Seal the gaps: door seals, weep holes, pipe penetrations and roof junctions.

The moisture items matter most. If you only do one thing, fix the water.

Households that would rather not think about it tend to move to a regular residential program, which catches problems at the point they are still small.

Questions we get asked

How much does it cost to get rid of pests in Sydney?

General pest treatments start from $89 and timber pest inspections from $159. Termite treatments and barriers are quoted after an inspection because the price depends on the construction and the extent of the activity. You get a fixed figure before any work begins.

Can I treat this myself?

If you have treated it once and it came back, that is the signal to call someone rather than to try again. Tell the technician what you have already applied - it affects which products can be used next.

Is everyone who attends licensed?

Licensed and insured, and happy to show either. If you are comparing quotes, ask each company for the licence number of the person actually attending rather than just the business name.

What brings pests indoors?

Usually something fixable: an unsealed food source, standing water, mulch or timber against the wall, or a gap at a weep hole or pipe penetration. A technician will point out which apply to your property.

Who pays in a rental or strata building?

For renters, report it to the agent in writing promptly, since that is often what decides responsibility. In a unit block the source is frequently outside your lot, and treating your own apartment repeatedly will not fix a population living in common property.

How do I stop them coming back?

Remove the food, remove the water, seal the gaps and keep vegetation off the walls. Of those, moisture matters most - fixing a leak or clearing a gutter prevents more problems than any spray. A scheduled annual service catches anything that slips through.

Do we need to leave the house during treatment?

Yes - and if anyone in the household has asthma, allergies or there is a newborn, tell us when booking and the technician adjusts the method. Re-entry is normally once treated surfaces have dried, and you are told the exact time on the day.

What happens if they come back?

Covered pests returning within six months are re-treated free. Termite barriers and baiting systems have their own longer warranties, generally conditional on annual monitoring. You get the terms in writing on the day.
