Quick answer

The honest version: mosquitoes come back when the cause is left in place. What follows covers how to tell what you are dealing with, what a licensed technician will actually do about it, realistic Sydney prices, and the prevention that makes the result hold. General treatments start from $89 with a 6-month warranty.

What you are actually dealing with

It helps to separate two things: what is making you call someone, and what is causing it. The visible mosquitoes are the first; the moisture, the gap or the food source behind them is the second, and only the second decides whether the result holds.

Get that sequence right and a single treatment generally holds. Get it wrong and you are treating the same thing next month.

Key points

  • Early action is consistently cheaper than waiting for certainty.
  • Identify the species before treating - the right product depends on it.
  • Treat the source, not the sightings: the nest or harbourage is the target.
  • Fix the conditions - moisture, food, entry points - or it returns.

If you want to see how the treatment is actually carried out, mosquito control walks through each stage.

What to look for

Before numbers become obvious there is almost always a quieter stage. What to look for:

  • A sharp rise in numbers a week to ten days after heavy rain.
  • Biting concentrated at dusk and dawn around doors and outdoor seating.
  • Water sitting in a plant-pot saucer, tarpaulin fold or disused tyre.
  • Resting adults on shaded walls, under eaves or in dense shrubbery.
  • Bites while sitting outside in the evening despite still air.

Where several of these show up together, the population is established rather than passing through, and the treatment needed changes accordingly.

If you are not certain which pest you are dealing with, the full range of treatments we carry out lists what we treat and the signs that point to each.

Why it is worth dealing with

Beyond the biting, mosquitoes in New South Wales transmit Ross River and Barmah Forest virus, and the state runs arbovirus surveillance each summer for exactly that reason. Both can cause joint pain and fatigue lasting months. Properties near wetlands, creek lines and estuaries carry the highest exposure.

None of that is scaremongering - it is simply the reason the price goes up the longer it is left.

How that is done in practice is covered under professional mosquito control.

Timing: when this peaks

Mosquito season in Sydney runs from roughly October to April, with numbers tracking rain a week or two earlier - a wet fortnight in January reliably produces a surge. Coastal and estuarine suburbs see saltmarsh species on high tides, while inland suburbs see container breeders from gutters and yard water.

That pattern is why timing a treatment well can do more than increasing the dose.

How the treatments differ

A technician chooses between these based on the species, the building and how established the population is:

MethodWorks well forLimitations
Residual to resting sitesTreats shaded walls and shrubbery where adults restReapplication through the season
Seasonal programMaintains pressure across summerOngoing service rather than one visit
Larvicide to standing waterStops larvae before they emergeOnly where water cannot be drained
Source reductionRemoves the breeding sites producing the adultsNeeds occupier follow-through

In practice they are used together. A single method on its own is usually a sign the job has been underscoped.

The method itself, product by product, is explained on our page about how mosquito control works.

Getting ready for the treatment

Treatments work better when the technician can reach things. Before the appointment:

  • Vacuum carpets and hard floors, then empty the vacuum outside.
  • Arrange for pets to be out of the way for a couple of hours.
  • Put food, utensils and pet bowls away or in sealed containers.
  • Clear a path to the roof void or subfloor access if there is one.
  • Clear access to kickboards, under sinks and around appliances.

Avoid washing down treated areas for at least a week, and resist adding your own spray on top.

Safety around the family

Fair question, and worth more than a one-word answer. Professional treatment is safe around families and pets because of how it is applied, not because the products are inert:

  • Fish tanks are covered and pet bowls and bedding moved before any treatment.
  • Products are APVMA-registered and applied at label rates by a licensed technician.
  • Quantities are measured to the area rather than applied until the bottle is empty.
  • You are given a specific re-entry time, usually just until treated surfaces are dry.

We would rather adjust the approach than have you worry about it afterwards, so raise it on the phone.

Anyone you let into your home for this work should be licensed and insured, and our licensing and insurance sets out ours.

When a supermarket spray is enough

There is no sense paying for a call-out you do not need. But the reasons DIY fails on a real infestation are consistent:

  • Retail products kill what they touch and leave the nest or harbourage producing.
  • Concentrations are lower and residual life shorter than professional-grade equivalents.
  • Without identification there is no way to know whether it is working or just scattering.
  • Spraying over bait placements makes them unpalatable and wastes the treatment.

If you have already tried something and it returned, that is the signal rather than a reason to try again harder.

The rest of what we handle is set out under everything we treat.

Mistakes that make it worse

These come up often enough to be worth listing. Each one either prolongs the problem or makes it harder to treat:

  • Treating only after biting starts rather than before the season.
  • Relying on a single outdoor device to cover an exposed yard.
  • Fogging the yard without removing the standing water that breeds them.
  • Ignoring gutters, which are the most commonly missed breeding site.

Mentioning what you have already applied saves time and avoids a product conflict.

Why the same problem is treated differently next door

Access decides a lot. What is straightforward in a house can be the hard part in an apartment:

  • Terraces and semis. Party walls and shared subfloors let populations travel; treating one side alone rarely holds.
  • Townhouses. Common walls plus private courtyards, so internal and external work both matter.
  • Apartments and units. Shared walls, services and risers mean the source is often outside your lot - partial treatment just moves it.
  • Commercial premises. Documentation, scheduling and after-hours access become part of the job.

The recurring-problem-in-a-unit pattern almost always means the population is living in common property.

The approach in a unit differs enough that we cover how apartments are treated separately.

After the treatment

The warranty on general pest work runs six months. Covered pests returning in that time are re-treated free - no argument, no second call-out fee.

The exclusions are the ordinary ones - a new pest is a new job, and a recurrence traced to an unfixed cause sits outside the cover. Termite barriers and baiting programs have their own longer warranties, conditional on annual monitoring.

Ask for it in writing. Any operator who will not put the warranty terms on the invoice is worth passing on.

Most of the homes we look after are on a scheduled home service rather than calling when something appears.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to get rid of mosquitoes in Sydney?

From $89 for general pest work in Sydney, and from $159 for a timber pest inspection. Termite barriers, baiting systems and commercial programs are priced after a site visit. Nothing is charged above the quoted figure without your agreement.

Where are the mosquitoes actually breeding?

Yes, but the work is mostly about water rather than chemistry. We treat resting sites and any water that cannot be drained, and identify the breeding sources on site - gutters are the most commonly missed one.

Is everyone who attends licensed?

Licensed and insured, and happy to show either. If you are comparing quotes, ask each company for the licence number of the person actually attending rather than just the business name.

Is there a guarantee on the work?

Covered pests returning within six months are re-treated free. Termite barriers and baiting systems have their own longer warranties, generally conditional on annual monitoring. You get the terms in writing on the day.

Do we need to leave the house during treatment?

It is safe when applied correctly, which is most of what a licence is for. Baits and dusts go where children and pets do not reach, fish tanks are covered and pet bowls moved. For general treatments you do not need to leave the property.

Can you just treat it without looking?

Yes, at least briefly. We would rather spend fifteen minutes finding the source than apply the wrong product well. For timber pests the inspection is the job, and you receive a written report.

When should the mosquitoes be gone?

Residual treatments start working within hours, but colony and baiting treatments are deliberately slower - the product has to be carried back to the nest. Expect a clear reduction within a week to two, and do not be alarmed if activity briefly rises first.

What attracts mosquitoes to a house?

Almost always a combination of moisture and an easy entry point. Leaks, condensation, blocked gutters and irrigation do more to attract pests than untidiness does, which is why spotless homes get them too.
