Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

Where Alexandria sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Postcode 2015 covers Alexandria and the streets immediately around it. At about 4.7 km south of the CBD it falls in the Inner South & City Fringe, where we have vans out daily. Our technicians are through Alexandria most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
A lot of our Alexandria jobs are in the streets around The Australian Golf Club and St Peters station, and we are out near Alexandria Technology Park regularly enough that the technician usually knows the access before they arrive.
Alexandria is in the City of Sydney and Bayside area, and we cover Erskineville, Beaconsfield and Newtown on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your ant problem has come from next door. The building stock is close-packed, so we look at what the property adjoins before deciding where product goes.
The bulk of our Alexandria work is terraces and semis where the problem has come through a shared wall. Mention the detail when you call 1300 313 373 - it decides how long we need on site.
We cover the remainder of 2015 as well, from Jack Floyd Reserve through to Park Sydney Village.
The 2015 run is set the day before and you are given an arrival time. Where Erskineville and Beaconsfield fall on the same round, we can usually bring the visit forward.
Ants in timber are a symptom. They do not create the damp, they move into timber the damp has already softened, so the leak matters more than the ants.
In a dry spell ants move indoors looking for moisture, which is why a spotless Alexandria kitchen still gets trails in January. The sink, the pet bowl and the shower recess are the attractions.
A colony can occupy a garden bed, a paving slab and a wall cavity at once. That is why a single treated nest in Alexandria changes very little on its own.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Tiny brown ants with a larger-headed soldier caste. The giveaway is loose sandy soil pushed up between pavers, along slab edges and in grout. Colonies are large with many nests, and oil-based granular baits work well.

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

Large and mostly nocturnal, nesting in soil, hollow trees and damp or softened timber. They rarely damage structure here, though a nest inside a wall is a reliable sign of moisture that needs attention.

Photo from an Elite job: an ant nest emerging from a mortar joint. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead straight into the wall cavity, which is where many black house ant colonies live.

An Elite job photo: gel placed directly on an active trail. Leave it be - the ants feeding there are the ones delivering it to the colony.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
Fine soil pushed up along paving, driveways and slab joints is the classic sign of coastal brown ants nesting underneath.
Warmth is what draws them into switches and electrical fittings. Never spray into a power point - tell us instead and we will treat it safely.
Swarms of winged ants in spring and summer are mating flights. Seen indoors, they can mean a mature colony inside the building.
Ant trails at the shower, vanity or toilet usually come down to moisture - either damp in the wall or a slow leak they are drinking from.
Bull and jumper ants live in lawn and garden-bed nests. The sting hurts, and for some people it brings on a serious allergic reaction.

Ants can detect a supermarket spray and will simply route around it. A professional non-repellent is undetectable, so they walk through it and carry the active home to the colony.
Ants will ignore bait that does not suit their current needs. Because they alternate between sugar and protein depending on the brood, we test preference rather than assume.
Bait takes days to work through a colony. If you spray the trail the day after we leave, you kill the couriers. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Species confirmed, then trails traced to entry points and to the nests - walls, paving, garden edges, roof space.
Sweet, protein and oil-based baits are offered in small amounts so the colony shows us its current preference.
We run gel along the active trails, window frames and skirting, keeping every placement out of reach of children and animals.
A non-repellent band around the footings, weep holes, door frames and paths catches ants as they come in.
Coastal brown ant nests under paving and along lawn edges get granular bait or direct treatment.
Written summary, instructions on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty covering the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sweet liquids and honeydew; protein while the colony is raising young | Gel bait placed on trails, non-repellent applied at weep holes and window frames | Wiping trails clean daily, so the colony simply forages on a different route |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oils | Oil-based granular bait on paving and lawn edges | Pouring boiling water or insecticide into one pile while dozens of nests remain |
| Argentine ant | Sugar for the most part, with periodic protein demand | Slow baits and a non-repellent applied along the property line | Using a repellent barrier spray - it divides the multi-queen colony |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, mostly at night | Night-time trail inspection, bait near the nest, fix moisture in timber | Treating only in daylight when the ants are not active |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects, outdoors | Treating the nest directly where it sits in lawn or garden bed | Digging the nest out by hand, which is how people get stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Activity resumes and brood rearing starts, so the colony wants protein | Trails appearing indoors again, and fresh sand piles in the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging peaks, and warm humid spells trigger mating flights | Swarms of winged ants, and heavy trails following storms or heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies peak in size and stock up for the cooler months | Trails into the pantry and around pet bowls |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Quiet outside, but colonies in warm wall cavities keep working | Ants around the heater, the hot water unit and the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
For a Alexandria cafe or kitchen, ants are a compliance finding. We run a documented program with monitoring points and reports your auditor will accept rather than a one-off spray.
Ants in the cavity of a Alexandria house will appear at power points, architraves and ceiling roses - anywhere the cavity opens into the room.
Ants protecting aphids on a Alexandria citrus or gardenia will keep that trail running all season. It is a garden problem presenting as a kitchen one.
The trail gets traced to its source. Spraying where you saw ants achieves very little.
Which bait we use depends on the ant and the season: sweet, protein or oil-based.
We use non-repellents the foragers carry back, not sprays that split the colony up.
Six months of warranty on a general ant treatment, and a return visit if they come back inside it.

These houses were built joined together, and they have aged that way. Party walls, continuous roof voids and shared drainage give ants a route your front door has no bearing on.
Joined housing with ageing drainage. That combination decides where product goes far more than the floor plan does.
