Budding splits the colony
Multi-queen species - Argentine ants and several house ants among them - react to a repellent by splitting. A queen and a few hundred workers relocate, and one colony becomes two.

Our Greater Parramatta & Cumberland technicians cover Berala and the rest of 2141 as a matter of course - it is only about 16.5 km west of the city. We run Berala on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
Most weeks we are somewhere between Regents Park station and Coleman Park in Berala, and York Street Park is close enough to be on the same run.
Under City of Parramatta and Cumberland, we cover Berala and Lidcombe, Regents Park and Potts Hill alike. The building stock is close-packed, so we look at what the property adjoins before deciding where product goes.
The bulk of our Berala work is terraces and semis where the problem has come through a shared wall. Mention the detail when you call 1300 313 373 - it decides how long we need on site.
Beyond that we are regularly around Carnarvon Golf Course, and out as far as Auburn Golf Course. If you are anywhere in 2141, you are inside the area we run.
A trail along a bench is foragers, and foragers are maybe five per cent of the colony. The queens, the brood and most of the workers are in a nest you have not found, which is why wiping the trail achieves nothing lasting in a Berala kitchen.
Pharaoh and some other small species nest indoors in warm voids and never go outside at all. In a Berala house that changes the treatment completely - and makes spraying actively harmful, because it buds the colony.
Some ants want protein, some want sugar, and the wrong bait gets ignored completely. Identifying what is trailing through a Berala kitchen is the difference between a result and a wasted visit.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

The small glossy black one you find in the kitchen. It runs along skirtings, window frames and cabling, nesting in wall cavities, roof voids and the edges of garden beds, and it takes sweet bait without much persuading.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

Dull brown, small, and noticeable for the thickness and speed of its trails. Multi-queen nests connect to neighbouring ones, which is how an infestation covers several properties. Repellents make it markedly worse.

Large ants, often active at night, that nest in soil, hollow trees and softened or damp timber. Unlike the notorious overseas species they are rarely a structural pest, but a nest in a wall often points to a leak worth fixing.

An Elite job photo showing a nest in masonry. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead into the wall cavity - the spot black house ants most often choose.

An Elite photo of gel bait on an active trail. The whole point is letting them feed and take it home, so the trail must be left alone once we have treated it.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
Ants entering from the external wall point to a cavity or garden-edge nest. Finding that entry is the first step.
Fine sand pushed up through paving, driveway and slab joints is coastal brown ants underneath, almost without exception.
They go into switches and appliances for the warmth. Keep insecticide out of power points and tell us, so it can be treated safely.
Swarming winged ants in spring or summer are a mating flight. Seen inside the house, it often means the colony is mature and in the building.
Trails in the bathroom point to water in the wall or a slow leak the ants have found.
These are the bull ants and jumper ants nesting in lawns and beds - a painful sting, and a risk of serious allergic reaction for some.

Retail sprays repel: the ants know they are there and go round. Professional non-repellents do not register, so the foragers deliver the active to the colony for us.
Ants will ignore bait that does not suit their current needs. Because they alternate between sugar and protein depending on the brood, we test preference rather than assume.
Bait takes days to work through a colony. If you spray the trail the day after we leave, you kill the couriers. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We work out which ant it is and follow the trails back, which is what locates nests in wall cavities, under paving, along garden edges and in roof spaces.
Sweet, protein and oil-based baits are offered in small amounts so the colony shows us its current preference.
Gel bait goes along trails, window frames and skirting where ants travel, out of reach of children and pets.
A non-repellent treatment around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths intercepts ants coming in.
Under-paver and lawn-edge nests are handled with granular bait, or treated directly where that is better.
You receive the job summary in writing, guidance on what to leave alone, and 6 months of warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sweet liquids and honeydew; protein while the colony is raising young | Gel bait placed on trails, non-repellent applied at weep holes and window frames | Wiping trails clean daily, so the colony simply forages on a different route |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oils | Oil-based granular bait on paving and lawn edges | Pouring boiling water or insecticide into one pile while dozens of nests remain |
| Argentine ant | Sugar for the most part, with periodic protein demand | Slow baits and a non-repellent applied along the property line | Using a repellent barrier spray - it divides the multi-queen colony |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, foraging after dark | Inspecting trails at night, baiting close to the nest, and fixing damp timber | Working only in daylight hours, when these ants are not out |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak foraging, mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants, heavy trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Full colony size, and foraging to build stores before it cools | Pantry trails, and ants on the pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outside activity drops away, though nests in warm wall cavities carry on | Ants near heaters, hot water units and in the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
We are around Berala station most weeks and cover every street in 2141, including the ones off the main roads.
If a trail runs up a shrub rather than into the house, the colony is farming aphids or scale for honeydew. Treating indoors will not stop it; the plant has to be dealt with too.
Nests under paving are sheltered, warm and almost impossible to flood out. They need bait placed at the active entrances, not a hose.
Trails are traced to the colony, not just sprayed where you saw them.
Sweet, protein or oil-based, picked to suit the ant and the point in the season.
Non-repellent products that foragers carry home, instead of sprays that scatter the colony.
Six months of warranty on a general ant treatment, and a return visit if they come back inside it.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. What changes the figure is the size of the building, how many areas are affected and the access. You get that number up front for Berala 2141, with no call-out fee. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. We are about 16.5 km west of the city here, and Berala is covered by the Greater Parramatta & Cumberland team.
Joined housing is the reason. Where walls, roof voids and sub-floors are continuous between properties, ants are a street-level problem rather than a house-level one.
Terraces, semis and converted blocks, which share structure - so we check what adjoins the property rather than treating it as a standalone building.
We do all of those. A good share of the Berala jobs we run are tenanted or strata properties, so the written record comes as standard.
It is, as long as you follow what we tell you on the day - usually keeping off treated surfaces for a couple of hours. Let us know at booking about young children, pets or an aquarium.
Most of the time you can carry on as normal. If a particular area needs to be empty we will flag it when we arrive and it is rarely more than a couple of hours.
Usually between one and two hours on site. Bigger properties and heavier infestations take more, and that is included in the quote rather than added afterwards.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. Ring us if activity picks up again inside that period and we will arrange the return.
Yes. As well as Berala we cover Lidcombe, Regents Park, Potts Hill and Birrong on the same runs, so a job that crosses a boundary can be handled in one visit.
