Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

Where Bickley Vale sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Bickley Vale is part of the Macarthur, 55.4 km or so south-west of the GPO, and 2570 is a postcode we know well. We travel out to Bickley Vale on planned runs through the Macarthur, so booking a day ahead gets you the best slot.
Much of our Bickley Vale work is in the streets around Peppercorn Park.
The suburb sits in the Campbelltown and Camden area. Cawdor, Grasmere and Camden South are all covered on the same day, so a problem that has spread across a boundary can be handled in one visit. Estate blocks are compact with narrow side passages, so access and the perimeter are where most of the work happens.
Around Bickley Vale the pattern is fairly consistent: newer homes on small blocks where next door has the same problem. Tell us which it is on the phone and we will come prepared for it.
The whole of 2570 is on our regular run.
When you book, we confirm the 2570 run the day before and give you an arrival time rather than a window. If we are already out at Cawdor or Grasmere that morning, we will usually offer you the earlier slot.
Pharaoh and some other small species nest indoors in warm voids and never go outside at all. In a Bickley Vale house that changes the treatment completely - and makes spraying actively harmful, because it buds the colony.
Many ants get most of their sugar from honeydew - the secretion of aphids and scale insects they actively protect on garden plants. A Bickley Vale garden with a scale problem is feeding the ant colony that then comes indoors.
Ants lay a pheromone trail that other workers follow, which is why the line is so precise and why it reappears in exactly the same place after you wipe it. Cleaning a Bickley Vale kitchen removes the smell for a few hours, not the colony that laid it.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small, shiny and black, and one of the most common kitchen ants in Sydney. It trails along skirting boards, window frames and power cables, and nests in wall voids, roof spaces and garden edges. It readily takes sweet baits.

Tiny brown ants with a larger-headed soldier caste. The giveaway is loose sandy soil pushed up between pavers, along slab edges and in grout. Colonies are large with many nests, and oil-based granular baits work well.

Small, dull brown and fast-moving in thick trails. Nests hold many queens and connect with neighbouring nests, so infestations can stretch across several properties. Repellent sprays are especially counter-productive with this species.

Large and mostly nocturnal, nesting in soil, hollow trees and damp or softened timber. They rarely damage structure here, though a nest inside a wall is a reliable sign of moisture that needs attention.

From an Elite job - a nest coming out of a mortar joint. Cracked mortar and weep holes open directly into the wall cavity, and that cavity is where a lot of black house ant colonies sit.

From an Elite job - gel bait set down on a live trail. The ants feed and carry it back to the nest, which is why we ask you not to wipe or spray that trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
Ants entering from the external wall point to a cavity or garden-edge nest. Finding that entry is the first step.
Fine soil pushed up along paving, driveways and slab joints is the classic sign of coastal brown ants nesting underneath.
A nest in a power point or appliance is about warmth. Spraying into electrical fittings is dangerous - tell us and we will treat it the right way.
Swarms of winged ants in spring and summer are mating flights. Seen indoors, they can mean a mature colony inside the building.
Bathroom trails around the shower, basin or toilet normally mean water: damp in the wall cavity, or a slow leak supplying the colony.
Lawns and garden beds are where bull ants and jumper ants nest. Their stings are painful and can trigger severe allergic reactions.

Supermarket sprays are repellent: ants detect them and walk around them. Professional non-repellent products are not detected, so foragers walk through, pick up the active and carry it back to nest mates.
A colony only takes bait if it wants that food at that moment. Ants switch between sugar and protein as their brood needs change, so we test preferences and change baits when needed.
Give it days, not hours. Bait has to be carried through the colony, and spraying the trail afterwards destroys the couriers doing that work. Our blog covers budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We work out which ant it is and follow the trails back, which is what locates nests in wall cavities, under paving, along garden edges and in roof spaces.
Small amounts of sweet, protein and oil-based bait show what the colony is feeding on right now.
Indoor placements are gel on the trail - skirting, window frames, travel routes - sited away from children and pets.
Outside, a non-repellent goes around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths, so ants coming in pick it up on the way.
Under-paver and lawn-edge nests are handled with granular bait, or treated directly where that is better.
You receive the job summary in writing, guidance on what to leave alone, and 6 months of warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Mostly sweet liquids and honeydew, with protein demand during brood rearing | Gel bait along the trail, plus non-repellent treatment to weep holes and door frames | Daily detergent wiping of trails - it moves the foraging rather than stopping it |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oily foods | Oil-based granular bait over paving and lawn margins | Attacking a single visible nest while the rest of the colony's nests carry on |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, mostly at night | Night-time trail inspection, bait near the nest, fix moisture in timber | Treating only in daylight when the ants are not active |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Insects and nectar outdoors | Direct nest treatment in lawns and garden beds | Digging into the nest by hand and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Activity resumes and brood rearing starts, so the colony wants protein | Trails appearing indoors again, and fresh sand piles in the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging peaks, and warm humid spells trigger mating flights | Swarms of winged ants, and heavy trails following storms or heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | The colony is at its largest and laying in stores before winter | Trails running into pantries and to pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor foraging slows right down while nests in heated walls continue | Ants showing up by heaters, hot water services and in kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Our Bickley Vale runs take in Peppercorn Park and continue across to the Cawdor boundary - all the same service area.
Ants in the cavity of a Bickley Vale house will appear at power points, architraves and ceiling roses - anywhere the cavity opens into the room.
Winter does not kill the colony, it just slows it. The nest under a Bickley Vale path in July is the same nest that produces the trail in October.
The trail gets traced to its source. Spraying where you saw ants achieves very little.
Sweet, protein or oil-based, picked to suit the ant and the point in the season.
Nothing repellent, because that causes budding. Non-repellent products get carried home instead.
Six months of warranty on a general ant treatment, and a return visit if they come back inside it.
