Budding splits the colony
A repellent does not kill a multi-queen colony, it divides it. A queen and several hundred workers shift to a new site, leaving you with two nests instead of one.

Camden South sits about 52.2 km south-west of the CBD in the Macarthur, and postcode 2570 is one we are in most weeks. We travel out to Camden South on planned runs through the Macarthur, so booking a day ahead gets you the best slot.
Around Camden South we are most often near Spring Farm Shopping Centre and Spring Farm Shopping Centre.
This is the Campbelltown and Camden area, and our runs here also take in Cawdor, Elderslie and Camden. Estate blocks are compact with narrow side passages, so access and the perimeter are where most of the work happens.
Camden South jobs tend to be estate houses with narrow side access and a shared fence line. Let us know which when you ring and we will plan the visit around it.
Wherever you are in 2570, you are inside the area our technicians cover.
We confirm your slot the day before and arrive at a stated time. Cawdor and Elderslie sit on the same run, so earlier appointments in 2570 come up regularly.
If there are ants running up a shrub beside a Camden South house, look for scale or aphids on it. They are farming, and that food source is what sustains the colony.
People assume a trail means something was left out. Around Camden South it is just as likely to be the bathroom, because water is the scarcer resource in summer.
A colony's preference also shifts with the season. Spring brood-rearing wants protein; later in summer the same Camden South colony wants sugars.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Shiny, black and small - Sydney's most common indoor ant. Trails follow skirting boards, window frames and power cables back to nests in wall voids, roof spaces or garden edges. Sweet baits work well on it.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

Big ants, usually out after dark, nesting in soil, hollow trees and timber that has gone soft or damp. They are not the structural threat their overseas relatives are, but finding one in a wall usually means there is a leak behind it.

From an Elite job - a nest coming out of a mortar joint. Cracked mortar and weep holes open directly into the wall cavity, and that cavity is where a lot of black house ant colonies sit.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail coming in from the external wall normally means a nest in the cavity or at the garden edge, and that entry point is where the tracing begins.
If fine soil keeps appearing in the paving joints and along the drive, coastal brown ants are nesting beneath it.
A nest in a power point or appliance is about warmth. Spraying into electrical fittings is dangerous - tell us and we will treat it the right way.
Those spring and summer swarms of winged ants are mating flights. If they are coming out inside the house, there may be a mature colony in the building.
Ant trails at the shower, vanity or toilet usually come down to moisture - either damp in the wall or a slow leak they are drinking from.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in the lawn and garden beds. The sting is genuinely painful and in some people causes a serious allergic reaction.

A repellent does not kill a multi-queen colony, it divides it. A queen and several hundred workers shift to a new site, leaving you with two nests instead of one.
Retail sprays repel: the ants know they are there and go round. Professional non-repellents do not register, so the foragers deliver the active to the colony for us.
A colony only takes bait if it wants that food at that moment. Ants switch between sugar and protein as their brood needs change, so we test preferences and change baits when needed.
Bait takes days to work through a colony. If you spray the trail the day after we leave, you kill the couriers. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Species confirmed, then trails traced to entry points and to the nests - walls, paving, garden edges, roof space.
Sweet, protein and oil-based baits are offered in small amounts so the colony shows us its current preference.
Gel bait goes along trails, window frames and skirting where ants travel, out of reach of children and pets.
A non-repellent band around the footings, weep holes, door frames and paths catches ants as they come in.
Coastal brown ant nests under paving and along lawn edges get granular bait or direct treatment.
You get a summary, advice on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugary liquids and honeydew, plus protein when raising brood | Sweet gel bait on trails, non-repellent perimeter at weep holes and frames | Wiping trails with detergent daily, which keeps the colony foraging elsewhere |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein | Granular oil-based bait across the paving and along lawn edges | Treating one sand pile with boiling water or insecticide when there are dozens more |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Insects and nectar, always outside | The nest itself is treated directly, in lawn or garden bed | Hand-digging a nest, which reliably ends in stings |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies come out of winter and begin raising brood, which pushes protein demand up | The first indoor trails of the season, and sand reappearing between pavers |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak activity, with swarming flights triggered by warm humid conditions | Flying ants, and trails that thicken noticeably after storms and heat |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | The colony is at its largest and laying in stores before winter | Trails running into pantries and to pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor activity slows, but nests in heated walls keep going | Ants around heaters, hot water units and kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
After sustained rain in Camden South we get a run of calls, and the cause is consistent: shallow nests waterlogged, the colony moved into a wall cavity or subfloor to dry out.
Food premises need bait placement that will not contaminate, and records of what was used where. That is a different job from a domestic callout.
Brick cavities are dry, warm and undisturbed, which makes them ideal nesting. The weep hole is the doorway and it is usually where we start on a Camden South job.
Finding the nest is the job - following the trail to it, not treating the visible end of it.
Which bait we use depends on the ant and the season: sweet, protein or oil-based.
Non-repellent products that foragers carry home, instead of sprays that scatter the colony.

On a newer estate the boundaries are close and the landscaping is young, so ants move between properties along fence lines with very little to stop them.
Newer homes, tightly spaced, usually slab on ground - so the treatment concentrates on the perimeter and entry points.
