Ant Control Across Botany

What we cover in Botany, and how quickly we can get there.

Postcode 2019 covers Botany and the streets immediately around it. At about 8.8 km south of the CBD it falls in the Inner South & City Fringe, where we have vans out daily. Our technicians are through Botany most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.

A good share of our Botany work is in the streets around Wall Reserve and Eastlake Golf Course.

This is the City of Sydney and Bayside area, and our runs here also take in Banksmeadow, Pagewood and Mascot. The building stock is close-packed, so we look at what the property adjoins before deciding where product goes.

The ant calls we take from Botany are mostly terraces and semis where the problem has come through a shared wall. If yours is one of them, mention it when you ring 1300 313 373 - it changes what the technician brings.

The whole of 2019 is on our regular run.

Bookings for 2019 are confirmed the day before with a set arrival time, not an all-day window. Jobs at Banksmeadow and Pagewood often share the same run, which is how earlier slots come up.

OVERVIEW

Ant Control That Reaches the Nest in Botany

A colony can occupy a garden bed, a paving slab and a wall cavity at once. That is why a single treated nest in Botany changes very little on its own.

Ants lay a pheromone trail that other workers follow, which is why the line is so precise and why it reappears in exactly the same place after you wipe it. Cleaning a Botany kitchen removes the smell for a few hours, not the colony that laid it.

Coastal brown ants, black house ants and odorous house ants all behave differently and all turn up around Botany. We identify before we bait rather than putting down a general-purpose product and hoping.

  • Species ID and trail tracing to the nest
  • Bait picked to suit what they are eating at the time
  • Perimeter products that are non-repellent and will not split the colony
  • From $89 with a 6-month warranty

SYDNEY SPECIES

Common Ants in Sydney Homes in Botany

Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Black house ant

Black House Ant

Shiny, black and small - Sydney's most common indoor ant. Trails follow skirting boards, window frames and power cables back to nests in wall voids, roof spaces or garden edges. Sweet baits work well on it.

Coastal brown ant

Coastal Brown Ant

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

Argentine ant

Argentine Ant

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

Carpenter ant

Sugar or Carpenter Ants

These are the large night-active ants that nest in soil, hollow trees and timber that has softened with damp. Structural damage is uncommon in Australia, but a wall nest points to a leak worth chasing.

Ant nest emerging from a mortar joint

Nests in Mortar and Masonry

Photo from an Elite job: an ant nest emerging from a mortar joint. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead straight into the wall cavity, which is where many black house ant colonies live.

Ant trail treated with gel bait along a wall line

Gel Bait on the Trail

An Elite photo of gel bait on an active trail. The whole point is letting them feed and take it home, so the trail must be left alone once we have treated it.

READING THE SIGNS

What Your Ant Problem Is Telling Us in Botany

Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.

A Trail From the Window or Weep Hole

A trail coming in from the external wall normally means a nest in the cavity or at the garden edge, and that entry point is where the tracing begins.

Sand Piles Between Pavers

Loose fine soil along paving, driveway joints and the slab edge means coastal brown ants have nested underneath.

Ants in Power Points or Appliances

Electrical fittings and switches stay warm, which is why ants nest in them. Do not spray into them; let us know and we will handle it properly.

Winged Ants After Warm Rain

Mating flights produce the winged swarms you see in spring and summer. Finding them indoors suggests a mature colony inside rather than outside.

Ants in the Bathroom

Ant trails at the shower, vanity or toilet usually come down to moisture - either damp in the wall or a slow leak they are drinking from.

Large Stinging Ants in the Yard

Bull ants and jumper ants nest in the lawn and garden beds. The sting is genuinely painful and in some people causes a serious allergic reaction.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why Household Sprays Make Ants Worse in Botany

Budding splits the colony

Where a species has many queens, a repellent spray causes budding rather than death. Part of the colony, queen included, moves elsewhere, and you have doubled the problem.

Repellent vs non-repellent

Supermarket sprays are repellent: ants detect them and walk around them. Professional non-repellent products are not detected, so foragers walk through, pick up the active and carry it back to nest mates.

Bait must beat the food on offer

If the bait is not what they want today, they will walk past it. Preference moves between sugar and protein with brood demand, so we test and change as needed.

Patience beats instant results

A bait program works over days. The worst thing you can do is spray the trail once we have gone - those ants are the delivery system. See our blog on budding in more detail.

OUR PROCESS

How We Treat an Ant Colony in Botany

Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.

01

Species & Trail Tracing

First the species, then the trails - followed back to where they enter and to nests in the wall, under paving, at garden edges or in the roof space.

02

Bait Preference Test

We put out small quantities of sweet, protein and oil-based bait to see which the colony is actually taking today.

03

Indoor Baiting

Gel bait goes along trails, window frames and skirting where ants travel, out of reach of children and pets.

04

Non-Repellent Perimeter

A non-repellent band around the footings, weep holes, door frames and paths catches ants as they come in.

05

Nest & Paving Treatment

Granular bait, or direct nest treatment, for the coastal brown ant nests under paving and at lawn edges.

06

Written Advice & Warranty

A written summary, clear advice on what not to spray afterwards, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.

BAIT SELECTION

Matching the Treatment to the Ant Species in Botany

The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.

SpeciesUsually feeding onTreatment approachCommon mistake
Black house antHoneydew and sugary liquids, switching to protein when there is broodSweet gel on active trails and a non-repellent perimeter at frames and weep holesWashing the trail down each day, which only relocates the foraging route
Coastal brown antOils and proteinGranular oil-based bait across the paving and along lawn edgesTreating one sand pile with boiling water or insecticide when there are dozens more
Argentine antSugar for the most part, with periodic protein demandSlow baits and a non-repellent applied along the property lineUsing a repellent barrier spray - it divides the multi-queen colony
Sugar ants (Camponotus)Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at nightA night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repairedDaytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely
Bull ants and jumper antsInsects and nectar outdoorsDirect nest treatment in lawns and garden bedsDigging into the nest by hand and getting stung

BEFORE AND AFTER

Dos and Don'ts for Ant Treatment in Botany

Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.

  • Do leave the trail untouched until we arrive and can follow it back
  • Do move sugar, honey, fruit and pet food into airtight containers
  • Do fix the leaks and damp spots anywhere near where you see them
  • Do trim back vegetation that touches the building
  • Don't spray shop-bought insecticide onto trails or bait placements
  • Don't mop the skirting or wipe the window sills for roughly a week
  • Don't take a pressure washer to the treated perimeter or paving for a few weeks
  • Don't put spray into power points, switches or any appliance
  • Tell us about pets, ponds and veggie gardens near the house
  • Call us if activity has not dropped after two weeks
LOCAL KNOW-HOW

Ants in Sydney Gardens, Paving and Units in Botany

We are around Eastlake Golf Course most weeks and cover every street in 2019, including the ones off the main roads.

A column of ants going in and out of a weep hole means they are nesting in the cavity, not the garden. Treating the garden bed in that case does nothing at all for a Botany home.

After sustained rain in Botany we get a run of calls, and the cause is consistent: shallow nests waterlogged, the colony moved into a wall cavity or subfloor to dry out.

How much does ant control cost in Botany?

Ant treatment starts from $89. We quote on the property rather than the postcode, so a unit in Botany and a large house are priced differently. The figure is fixed before any work starts. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.

How quickly can you get to Botany?

At roughly 8.8 km south of the city, Botany is on a route we run regularly. Same-day attendance is usually available. You will be given a time, not a window.

Why are ants such a problem in Botany?

Two things stack up here: shared structure and old drainage. Either one on its own is manageable; together they are why ants in this kind of housing is a street-level problem.

What sort of properties do you treat in Botany?

Terraces, semis and converted blocks, which share structure - so we check what adjoins the property rather than treating it as a standalone building.

Can you do a rental or a strata property in Botany?

Yes. Houses, townhouses, units, strata common property, rentals and commercial sites in Botany 2019 are all part of what we do, and the paperwork is the kind agents accept.

Is the treatment safe around children and pets?

Yes. The products are registered for this use and applied at label rates, and placement keeps them away from where children and animals go. Let us know at booking about pets, fish tanks or anyone with asthma and we will plan the visit around it.

Can we stay home while the treatment is done?

You do not normally need to leave. Anything requiring an empty room is short, and you will know about it before the work starts.

How long does the treatment take?

Most ant control jobs in a Botany home take between one and two hours on site, depending on the size of the property and how much of it is affected.

What if the ants come back?

Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. If activity continues past the expected period, call us and we will come back.

Do you cover the suburbs around Botany too?

Yes - we work right across the City of Sydney and Bayside area, which takes in Botany and the suburbs around it.
