Budding splits the colony
Where a species has many queens, a repellent spray causes budding rather than death. Part of the colony, queen included, moves elsewhere, and you have doubled the problem.

Where Castlereagh sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Castlereagh sits about 53.7 km north-west of the CBD in the Penrith & the Outer West, and postcode 2749 is one we are in most weeks. We travel out to Castlereagh on planned runs through the Penrith & the Outer West, so booking a day ahead gets you the best slot.
Much of our Castlereagh work is in the streets around Yellomundee Regional Park.
Penrith City and Hawkesbury is the council area for Castlereagh, and we treat Yarramundi, Londonderry and Cranebrook on the same schedule. With acreage the problem is often outside the house entirely - sheds, woodpiles and outbuildings get inspected too.
The bulk of our Castlereagh work is rural-residential homes where it started in a stable or a feed store. Mention the detail when you call 1300 313 373 - it decides how long we need on site.
All of 2749 falls inside the area we service.
When you book, we confirm the 2749 run the day before and give you an arrival time rather than a window. If we are already out at Yarramundi or Londonderry that morning, we will usually offer you the earlier slot.
Many ants get most of their sugar from honeydew - the secretion of aphids and scale insects they actively protect on garden plants. A Castlereagh garden with a scale problem is feeding the ant colony that then comes indoors.
What you are looking at is a supply line, not a population. Treat the line and the colony sends another one tomorrow along a slightly different route.
People expect a single nest. Coastal brown ants and Argentine ants run dozens of connected nests across a property and beyond it, so the question is never just where it is but how far it goes.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

A small black ant with a glossy body, and the one most often in Sydney kitchens. It nests in wall cavities, the roof void and garden edges, trails along skirtings and cabling, and feeds readily on sweet bait.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

Large ants that come out at night and nest in soil, hollow trees or damp timber. Unlike the overseas carpenter ants they seldom threaten structure - but a nest in a wall tells you there is moisture there.

An Elite job photo showing a nest in masonry. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead into the wall cavity - the spot black house ants most often choose.

Photo from an Elite job: gel bait placed along an active trail. The ants are left to feed and carry the bait home, so we ask customers not to wipe or spray the trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
When they come in from the outside wall, the nest is usually in the cavity or just outside in the garden. We work back from the entry point.
That fine sandy soil appearing between pavers, along the driveway and at slab joints is the classic coastal brown ant sign - they are nesting below.
Ants nesting in switches and electrical fittings are drawn to the warmth. Do not spray into power points; tell us so we can treat safely.
Mating flights produce the winged swarms you see in spring and summer. Finding them indoors suggests a mature colony inside rather than outside.
When trails appear around the shower, vanity or toilet, moisture is the reason - often a slow leak the colony is drinking from.
These are the bull ants and jumper ants nesting in lawns and beds - a painful sting, and a risk of serious allergic reaction for some.

Where a species has many queens, a repellent spray causes budding rather than death. Part of the colony, queen included, moves elsewhere, and you have doubled the problem.
Repellent means detectable, and detectable means avoided. Non-repellent products let foragers walk through and transfer the active to the rest of the nest.
Ants will ignore bait that does not suit their current needs. Because they alternate between sugar and protein depending on the brood, we test preference rather than assume.
Bait takes days to work through a colony. If you spray the trail the day after we leave, you kill the couriers. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
First the species, then the trails - followed back to where they enter and to nests in the wall, under paving, at garden edges or in the roof space.
We put out small quantities of sweet, protein and oil-based bait to see which the colony is actually taking today.
Inside, gel bait follows the trails: window frames, skirting, the routes they already use, always placed where children and pets cannot get to it.
The perimeter gets a non-repellent product - foundation, weep holes, door frames, paths - which intercepts ants before they are inside.
Coastal brown ant nests under paving and along lawn edges get granular bait or direct treatment.
You get a summary, advice on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Mostly sweet liquids and honeydew, with protein demand during brood rearing | Gel bait along the trail, plus non-repellent treatment to weep holes and door frames | Daily detergent wiping of trails - it moves the foraging rather than stopping it |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein | Granular oil-based bait across the paving and along lawn edges | Treating one sand pile with boiling water or insecticide when there are dozens more |
| Argentine ant | Sugar for the most part, with periodic protein demand | Slow baits and a non-repellent applied along the property line | Using a repellent barrier spray - it divides the multi-queen colony |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, mostly at night | Night-time trail inspection, bait near the nest, fix moisture in timber | Treating only in daylight when the ants are not active |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies wake up and start raising new brood, so protein demand rises | First trails indoors, sand piles reappearing in paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak activity, with swarming flights triggered by warm humid conditions | Flying ants, and trails that thicken noticeably after storms and heat |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies reach full size and start stocking up ahead of the cold | Trails heading for the pantry and the pet food bowl |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Little happening outdoors, but a nest in a heated wall stays active | Activity around heaters, the hot water unit and kitchen areas |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
A storm is the most reliable trigger for an indoor ant problem. Nests in soil and paving flood, and the colony relocates somewhere dry, meaning your building.
Honeydew is a sugar supply the colony will defend. We point out the plant on a Castlereagh job because otherwise the trail simply re-establishes.
Brick cavities are dry, warm and undisturbed, which makes them ideal nesting. The weep hole is the doorway and it is usually where we start on a Castlereagh job.
Trails lead somewhere, so we follow them to the colony instead of spraying the sighting.
The bait is chosen for the species and the time of year - sweet, protein or oil-based.
Non-repellent products only - they are taken back to the nest rather than scattering it.
If ants return within 6 months of a general treatment, we return at no charge.
