Budding splits the colony
Multi-queen species - Argentine ants and several house ants among them - react to a repellent by splitting. A queen and a few hundred workers relocate, and one colony becomes two.

What we cover in Croydon, and how quickly we can get there.
Our Inner West technicians cover Croydon and the rest of 2132 as a matter of course - it is only about 8.9 km west of the city. Our technicians are through Croydon most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
If you are near Croydon station, Reed Reserve or Ashfield Aquatic Centre, that is ground we cover constantly - it is the busiest part of Croydon for us.
Croydon is in the Inner West, Burwood, Strathfield and Canada Bay area, and we cover Burwood, Ashfield and Croydon Park on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your ant problem has come from next door. Most of the housing here shares a wall, a roof void or a sub-floor with something else, so we check what adjoins the property rather than treating it in isolation.
The ant calls we take from Croydon are mostly terraces and semis where the problem has come through a shared wall. If yours is one of them, mention it when you ring 1300 313 373 - it changes what the technician brings.
Beyond that we are regularly around Graham Reserve, and out as far as Westfield Burwood. If you are anywhere in 2132, you are inside the area we run.
Your appointment is confirmed the day before with a real arrival time. Because Burwood and Ashfield are covered on the same round, 2132 often has an earlier slot available.
Indoor nests sit in wall cavities, behind splashbacks, under baths and in roof insulation. Finding them is most of the work on a Croydon job.
After heavy rain the opposite happens - flooded nests push colonies up and inside. Both extremes send ants into Croydon houses for different reasons.
Where we find ants in a Croydon wall or frame, we look for the water first. Fix the leak and the timber dries; leave it and another colony will use the same cavity.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Tiny brown ants with a larger-headed soldier caste. The giveaway is loose sandy soil pushed up between pavers, along slab edges and in grout. Colonies are large with many nests, and oil-based granular baits work well.

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

These are the large night-active ants that nest in soil, hollow trees and timber that has softened with damp. Structural damage is uncommon in Australia, but a wall nest points to a leak worth chasing.

From an Elite job - a nest coming out of a mortar joint. Cracked mortar and weep holes open directly into the wall cavity, and that cavity is where a lot of black house ant colonies sit.

From an Elite job - gel bait set down on a live trail. The ants feed and carry it back to the nest, which is why we ask you not to wipe or spray that trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
Ants arriving from the outside wall usually nest in the cavity or garden edge. The entry point is where we start tracing.
Fine soil pushed up along paving, driveways and slab joints is the classic sign of coastal brown ants nesting underneath.
Warmth is what draws them into switches and electrical fittings. Never spray into a power point - tell us instead and we will treat it safely.
Mating flights produce the winged swarms you see in spring and summer. Finding them indoors suggests a mature colony inside rather than outside.
Trails around the shower, vanity or toilet often mean moisture in the wall or a colony drinking from a slow leak.
Bull and jumper ants live in lawn and garden-bed nests. The sting hurts, and for some people it brings on a serious allergic reaction.

Multi-queen species - Argentine ants and several house ants among them - react to a repellent by splitting. A queen and a few hundred workers relocate, and one colony becomes two.
Repellent means detectable, and detectable means avoided. Non-repellent products let foragers walk through and transfer the active to the rest of the nest.
If the bait is not what they want today, they will walk past it. Preference moves between sugar and protein with brood demand, so we test and change as needed.
Give it days, not hours. Bait has to be carried through the colony, and spraying the trail afterwards destroys the couriers doing that work. Our blog covers budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Species confirmed, then trails traced to entry points and to the nests - walls, paving, garden edges, roof space.
We put out small quantities of sweet, protein and oil-based bait to see which the colony is actually taking today.
Gel is placed on the trails themselves - along window frames and skirting boards - and positioned out of reach of children and pets.
We treat the foundation line, weep holes, door frames and paths with a non-repellent so incoming ants carry it with them.
Granular bait or direct treatment for coastal brown ant nests under pavers and in lawn edges.
You get a summary, advice on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugars and honeydew, turning to protein while brood is being raised | Sweet gel on the trails themselves, with a non-repellent at weep holes and frames | Cleaning the trail off every day, which just sends them foraging somewhere else |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oils | Oil-based granular bait on paving and lawn edges | Pouring boiling water or insecticide into one pile while dozens of nests remain |
| Argentine ant | Sugar for the most part, with periodic protein demand | Slow baits and a non-repellent applied along the property line | Using a repellent barrier spray - it divides the multi-queen colony |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, mostly at night | Night-time trail inspection, bait near the nest, fix moisture in timber | Treating only in daylight when the ants are not active |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects, outdoors | Treating the nest directly where it sits in lawn or garden bed | Digging the nest out by hand, which is how people get stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies wake up and start raising new brood, so protein demand rises | First trails indoors, sand piles reappearing in paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging peaks, and warm humid spells trigger mating flights | Swarms of winged ants, and heavy trails following storms or heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Full colony size, and foraging to build stores before it cools | Pantry trails, and ants on the pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor foraging slows right down while nests in heated walls continue | Ants showing up by heaters, hot water services and in kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Mulch against the wall, a shrub touching the eaves and a damp garden bed along the footings all put ants within reach of the building. In Croydon we routinely find the colony is in the garden, not the house.
Food premises need bait placement that will not contaminate, and records of what was used where. That is a different job from a domestic callout.
We are around Graham Reserve most weeks and cover every street in 2132, including the ones off the main roads.
We follow the trail back to the colony rather than treating the spot where you noticed it.
Which bait we use depends on the ant and the season: sweet, protein or oil-based.
Sprays that scatter a colony are avoided entirely in favour of non-repellents the ants deliver themselves.
If ants return within 6 months of a general treatment, we return at no charge.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. The fixed price depends on the size of the property and how far the problem has spread, and we confirm it before we start - there is no call-out fee in Croydon 2132. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. Croydon sits roughly 8.9 km west of the CBD, inside our Inner West run, so we book a time and keep to it.
Joined housing is the reason. Where walls, roof voids and sub-floors are continuous between properties, ants are a street-level problem rather than a house-level one.
Mostly terrace and semi. We look at the party wall, the sub-floor and the roof space, because those are the routes between houses.
We do all of those. A good share of the Croydon jobs we run are tenanted or strata properties, so the written record comes as standard.
It is, as long as you follow what we tell you on the day - usually keeping off treated surfaces for a couple of hours. Let us know at booking about young children, pets or an aquarium.
Usually not. Most of the work is done with you in the house, and where a room does need to be clear it is for a short period we will tell you about on arrival.
An hour to two hours covers most jobs. The size of the building and the extent of the problem are what change it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. So if they turn up again within the warranty, ring us and we will attend.
Yes. As well as Croydon we cover Burwood, Ashfield, Croydon Park and Canada Bay on the same runs, so a job that crosses a boundary can be handled in one visit.
