Budding splits the colony

Postcode 2131 covers Ashfield and the streets immediately around it. At about 8.1 km west of the CBD it falls in the Inner West, where we have vans out daily. Our technicians are through Ashfield most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
Around Ashfield we work the pockets near Graham Reserve, Ashfield Mall and Ashfield station most often, so the van is rarely far away when a job comes in.
We work under the Inner West, Burwood, Strathfield and Canada Bay area here, and Summer Hill, Ashbury and Croydon are all on the same route, which matters when ant problems are moving between adjoining properties. The building stock is close-packed, so we look at what the property adjoins before deciding where product goes.
Ashfield jobs tend to be older semis with a paved rear courtyard and a sub-floor that no longer dries out. Let us know which when you ring and we will plan the visit around it.
Our Ashfield runs also take in Pratten Park Bowling Club and the area near Ashfield Aquatic Centre, so the whole postcode is served.
Bookings for 2131 are confirmed the day before with a set arrival time, not an all-day window. Jobs at Summer Hill and Ashbury often share the same run, which is how earlier slots come up.
The reason the trail returns to the same spot in a Ashfield kitchen is that it is marked chemically. Wiping it buys hours. Treating the colony that maintains it is the only thing that ends it.
What you are looking at is a supply line, not a population. Treat the line and the colony sends another one tomorrow along a slightly different route.
Some ants want protein, some want sugar, and the wrong bait gets ignored completely. Identifying what is trailing through a Ashfield kitchen is the difference between a result and a wasted visit.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Very small brown ants, with soldiers that have noticeably bigger heads. You spot them by the fine sandy soil pushed up through paving joints, slab edges and grout. The colonies are big and multi-nested, so oil-based granular bait is the tool.

Small, dull brown and fast-moving in thick trails. Nests hold many queens and connect with neighbouring nests, so infestations can stretch across several properties. Repellent sprays are especially counter-productive with this species.

Large ants that come out at night and nest in soil, hollow trees or damp timber. Unlike the overseas carpenter ants they seldom threaten structure - but a nest in a wall tells you there is moisture there.

Taken on an Elite job: a mortar joint with a nest behind it. Weep holes and failed mortar are a direct path into the cavity, where many black house ant colonies establish.

An Elite job photo: gel placed directly on an active trail. Leave it be - the ants feeding there are the ones delivering it to the colony.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail coming in from the external wall normally means a nest in the cavity or at the garden edge, and that entry point is where the tracing begins.
That fine sandy soil appearing between pavers, along the driveway and at slab joints is the classic coastal brown ant sign - they are nesting below.
Electrical fittings and switches stay warm, which is why ants nest in them. Do not spray into them; let us know and we will handle it properly.
Swarming winged ants in spring or summer are a mating flight. Seen inside the house, it often means the colony is mature and in the building.
When trails appear around the shower, vanity or toilet, moisture is the reason - often a slow leak the colony is drinking from.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in lawns and garden beds. Their stings hurt and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.
Retail sprays repel: the ants know they are there and go round. Professional non-repellents do not register, so the foragers deliver the active to the colony for us.
Ants will ignore bait that does not suit their current needs. Because they alternate between sugar and protein depending on the brood, we test preference rather than assume.
Results come over days as the bait spreads. Spray the trail the next morning and you have killed the ants that were carrying it home. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We identify the ant and follow trails back to entry points and nests in walls, paving, garden edges and roof spaces.
Small amounts of sweet, protein and oil-based bait show what the colony is feeding on right now.
Gel bait goes along trails, window frames and skirting where ants travel, out of reach of children and pets.
We treat the foundation line, weep holes, door frames and paths with a non-repellent so incoming ants carry it with them.
Granular bait, or direct nest treatment, for the coastal brown ant nests under paving and at lawn edges.
A written summary, clear advice on what not to spray afterwards, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Mostly sweet liquids and honeydew, with protein demand during brood rearing | Gel bait along the trail, plus non-repellent treatment to weep holes and door frames | Daily detergent wiping of trails - it moves the foraging rather than stopping it |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oil | Oil-based granular bait applied to paving and lawn edges | Pouring insecticide into one pile and assuming that was the colony |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects, outdoors | Treating the nest directly where it sits in lawn or garden bed | Digging the nest out by hand, which is how people get stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Activity resumes and brood rearing starts, so the colony wants protein | Trails appearing indoors again, and fresh sand piles in the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak activity, with swarming flights triggered by warm humid conditions | Flying ants, and trails that thicken noticeably after storms and heat |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor activity slows, but nests in heated walls keep going | Ants around heaters, hot water units and kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Food premises need bait placement that will not contaminate, and records of what was used where. That is a different job from a domestic callout.
Ants protecting aphids on a Ashfield citrus or gardenia will keep that trail running all season. It is a garden problem presenting as a kitchen one.
Fine soil pushed up along paving joints, path edges and garden edging is excavation - there is a nest directly beneath. Around Ashfield that is coastal brown ants more often than not.
The trail gets traced to its source. Spraying where you saw ants achieves very little.
Which bait we use depends on the ant and the season: sweet, protein or oil-based.
Nothing repellent, because that causes budding. Non-repellent products get carried home instead.
General ant treatments are covered. If ants come back within 6 months, so do we.
