Budding splits the colony
Where a species has many queens, a repellent spray causes budding rather than death. Part of the colony, queen included, moves elsewhere, and you have doubled the problem.

Enfield sits about 11.1 km west of the CBD in the Inner West, and postcode 2136 is one we are in most weeks. We run Enfield on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
Most weeks we are somewhere between Burwood Plaza and Cooinoo Reserve in Enfield, and Frog Conservation Area is close enough to be on the same run.
We work under the Inner West, Burwood, Strathfield and Canada Bay area here, and Burwood, Croydon Park and Strathfield are all on the same route, which matters when ant problems are moving between adjoining properties. Terraces, semis and converted blocks share cavities and risers, which is why a single-unit treatment often does not hold on its own.
Most Enfield bookings come in as older semis with a paved rear courtyard and a sub-floor that no longer dries out. Say which one applies when you call 1300 313 373 and the technician will have the right products on the van.
Every part of 2136 is covered as standard.
Your appointment is confirmed the day before with a real arrival time. Because Burwood and Croydon Park are covered on the same round, 2136 often has an earlier slot available.
Many ants get most of their sugar from honeydew - the secretion of aphids and scale insects they actively protect on garden plants. A Enfield garden with a scale problem is feeding the ant colony that then comes indoors.
What you are looking at is a supply line, not a population. Treat the line and the colony sends another one tomorrow along a slightly different route.
Several of the species we treat around Enfield are polydomous - one colony spread across many nests. Treating the nest you found leaves the rest of it working, which is why we look for the extent before we choose a product.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Shiny, black and small - Sydney's most common indoor ant. Trails follow skirting boards, window frames and power cables back to nests in wall voids, roof spaces or garden edges. Sweet baits work well on it.

Tiny brown ants with a larger-headed soldier caste. The giveaway is loose sandy soil pushed up between pavers, along slab edges and in grout. Colonies are large with many nests, and oil-based granular baits work well.

Small and flat brown in colour, running in dense fast trails. Because nests hold many queens and join with those next door, the infestation is usually bigger than one property. Never spray a repellent on it.

These are the large night-active ants that nest in soil, hollow trees and timber that has softened with damp. Structural damage is uncommon in Australia, but a wall nest points to a leak worth chasing.

From an Elite job - a nest coming out of a mortar joint. Cracked mortar and weep holes open directly into the wall cavity, and that cavity is where a lot of black house ant colonies sit.

From an Elite job - gel bait set down on a live trail. The ants feed and carry it back to the nest, which is why we ask you not to wipe or spray that trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
Fine sand pushed up through paving, driveway and slab joints is coastal brown ants underneath, almost without exception.
Electrical fittings and switches stay warm, which is why ants nest in them. Do not spray into them; let us know and we will handle it properly.
Swarms of winged ants in spring and summer are mating flights. Seen indoors, they can mean a mature colony inside the building.
Ant trails at the shower, vanity or toilet usually come down to moisture - either damp in the wall or a slow leak they are drinking from.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in lawns and garden beds. Their stings hurt and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

The difference matters. Retail sprays are repellent - ants sense them and avoid the treated area. Non-repellent products cannot be detected, so foragers cross them, pick up the active and take it back to the nest.
If the bait is not what they want today, they will walk past it. Preference moves between sugar and protein with brood demand, so we test and change as needed.
Results come over days as the bait spreads. Spray the trail the next morning and you have killed the ants that were carrying it home. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We work out which ant it is and follow the trails back, which is what locates nests in wall cavities, under paving, along garden edges and in roof spaces.
We put out small quantities of sweet, protein and oil-based bait to see which the colony is actually taking today.
Indoor placements are gel on the trail - skirting, window frames, travel routes - sited away from children and pets.
A non-repellent band around the footings, weep holes, door frames and paths catches ants as they come in.
Granular bait, or direct nest treatment, for the coastal brown ant nests under paving and at lawn edges.
You receive the job summary in writing, guidance on what to leave alone, and 6 months of warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugars and honeydew, turning to protein while brood is being raised | Sweet gel on the trails themselves, with a non-repellent at weep holes and frames | Cleaning the trail off every day, which just sends them foraging somewhere else |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oil | Oil-based granular bait applied to paving and lawn edges | Pouring insecticide into one pile and assuming that was the colony |
| Argentine ant | Mainly sugars, protein at some points in the cycle | Slow-acting bait with a non-repellent treatment right across the boundary | Spraying a repellent barrier, which causes a multi-queen nest to bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, active after dark | Night trail inspection, baiting near the nest, and dealing with damp timber | Inspecting in daylight when the colony is not foraging |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Insects and nectar, always outside | The nest itself is treated directly, in lawn or garden bed | Hand-digging a nest, which reliably ends in stings |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging at its height, and mating flights whenever it turns warm and humid | Winged ants indoors, and much heavier trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor foraging slows right down while nests in heated walls continue | Ants showing up by heaters, hot water services and in kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Heavy rain floods shallow nests, and the colony moves to the nearest dry cavity - which is usually a wall, a subfloor or under a slab. A sudden indoor trail in Enfield after a storm is almost always this.
Ants in the cavity of a Enfield house will appear at power points, architraves and ceiling roses - anywhere the cavity opens into the room.
We are around Frog Conservation Area most weeks and cover every street in 2136, including the ones off the main roads.
The trail gets traced to its source. Spraying where you saw ants achieves very little.
Sweet, protein or oil-based, picked to suit the ant and the point in the season.
Nothing repellent, because that causes budding. Non-repellent products get carried home instead.
A general ant treatment carries 6 months of cover - if they return inside it, so do we.

Joined housing is the reason. Where walls, roof voids and sub-floors are continuous between properties, ants are a street-level problem rather than a house-level one.
Terraces and semis that share walls, roof voids and drainage - so we look at what the property adjoins before deciding where product goes.
Yes. We work in houses, units, strata blocks, rentals and commercial premises across Enfield 2136, and we provide the written report agents and strata managers ask for.
It is, applied properly. We put product into cracks, voids and stations rather than across open surfaces, and we will tell you what to stay off and for how long before we leave.
Usually not. Most ant control work is done with you there, and anything that needs the room vacated is for a short period we will tell you about beforehand.
For a standard Enfield home, one to two hours. We would rather tell you it will take longer up front than rush it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. So if they turn up again within the warranty, ring us and we will attend.
