Budding splits the colony
Multi-queen species - Argentine ants and several house ants among them - react to a repellent by splitting. A queen and a few hundred workers relocate, and one colony becomes two.

We treat ants right across 2135. Strathfield is roughly 12.4 km west of the city, which puts it well inside the Inner West run our technicians work. We run Strathfield on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
Around Strathfield we work the pockets near Frog Conservation Area, Strathfield Plaza and Freshwater Park most often, so the van is rarely far away when a job comes in.
The suburb sits in the Inner West, Burwood, Strathfield and Canada Bay area. Enfield, Burwood and Homebush are all covered on the same day, so a problem that has spread across a boundary can be handled in one visit. The building stock is close-packed, so we look at what the property adjoins before deciding where product goes.
Strathfield jobs tend to be terraces and semis where the problem has come through a shared wall. Let us know which when you ring and we will plan the visit around it.
Wherever you are in 2135, you are inside the area our technicians cover.
Your appointment is confirmed the day before with a real arrival time. Because Enfield and Burwood are covered on the same round, 2135 often has an earlier slot available.
What looks like a queue is a chemical road. Each worker reinforces it on the way back, so the trail gets stronger the better the food is - and re-forms along the same skirting the moment the cleaning dries.
If there are ants running up a shrub beside a Strathfield house, look for scale or aphids on it. They are farming, and that food source is what sustains the colony.
Several of the species we treat around Strathfield are polydomous - one colony spread across many nests. Treating the nest you found leaves the rest of it working, which is why we look for the extent before we choose a product.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

A small black ant with a glossy body, and the one most often in Sydney kitchens. It nests in wall cavities, the roof void and garden edges, trails along skirtings and cabling, and feeds readily on sweet bait.

Minute brown ants with larger-headed soldiers among them. Fine sand in paving joints, at slab edges and in grout is the tell. Because a colony holds many nests, oil-based granular baits are the right approach.

Fast-moving, small and dull brown, in thick trails. Its nests are multi-queen and interconnected with neighbouring nests, so it spreads across properties - and repellent sprays accelerate exactly that.

These are the large night-active ants that nest in soil, hollow trees and timber that has softened with damp. Structural damage is uncommon in Australia, but a wall nest points to a leak worth chasing.

From an Elite job - a nest coming out of a mortar joint. Cracked mortar and weep holes open directly into the wall cavity, and that cavity is where a lot of black house ant colonies sit.

An Elite photo of gel bait on an active trail. The whole point is letting them feed and take it home, so the trail must be left alone once we have treated it.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
When they come in from the outside wall, the nest is usually in the cavity or just outside in the garden. We work back from the entry point.
If fine soil keeps appearing in the paving joints and along the drive, coastal brown ants are nesting beneath it.
They go into switches and appliances for the warmth. Keep insecticide out of power points and tell us, so it can be treated safely.
Those spring and summer swarms of winged ants are mating flights. If they are coming out inside the house, there may be a mature colony in the building.
Bathroom trails around the shower, basin or toilet normally mean water: damp in the wall cavity, or a slow leak supplying the colony.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in lawns and garden beds. Their stings hurt and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

Supermarket sprays are repellent: ants detect them and walk around them. Professional non-repellent products are not detected, so foragers walk through, pick up the active and carry it back to nest mates.
A colony's appetite shifts between sugar and protein with the brood cycle. Bait only works when it matches, which is why we test preferences on site.
A bait program works over days. The worst thing you can do is spray the trail once we have gone - those ants are the delivery system. See our blog on budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We work out which ant it is and follow the trails back, which is what locates nests in wall cavities, under paving, along garden edges and in roof spaces.
We put out small quantities of sweet, protein and oil-based bait to see which the colony is actually taking today.
Gel bait goes along trails, window frames and skirting where ants travel, out of reach of children and pets.
A non-repellent band around the footings, weep holes, door frames and paths catches ants as they come in.
For nests beneath pavers and in lawn edges - typically coastal brown ants - we use granular bait or treat the nest directly.
The job ends with a written summary, advice on what to avoid spraying, and a 6-month warranty.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugary liquids and honeydew, plus protein when raising brood | Sweet gel bait on trails, non-repellent perimeter at weep holes and frames | Wiping trails with detergent daily, which keeps the colony foraging elsewhere |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein | Granular oil-based bait across the paving and along lawn edges | Treating one sand pile with boiling water or insecticide when there are dozens more |
| Argentine ant | Mainly sugars, protein at some points in the cycle | Slow-acting bait with a non-repellent treatment right across the boundary | Spraying a repellent barrier, which causes a multi-queen nest to bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, active after dark | Night trail inspection, baiting near the nest, and dealing with damp timber | Inspecting in daylight when the colony is not foraging |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | The colony restarts and begins brood production, raising its protein needs | First trails inside, and sandy soil showing up in paving joints |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak activity, with swarming flights triggered by warm humid conditions | Flying ants, and trails that thicken noticeably after storms and heat |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies peak in size and stock up for the cooler months | Trails into the pantry and around pet bowls |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Quiet outside, but colonies in warm wall cavities keep working | Ants around the heater, the hot water unit and the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Food premises need bait placement that will not contaminate, and records of what was used where. That is a different job from a domestic callout.
Anywhere in 2135, or over toward Enfield, is inside the area we treat at the same price.
Winter does not kill the colony, it just slows it. The nest under a Strathfield path in July is the same nest that produces the trail in October.
The trail gets traced to its source. Spraying where you saw ants achieves very little.
Which bait we use depends on the ant and the season: sweet, protein or oil-based.
Sprays that scatter a colony are avoided entirely in favour of non-repellents the ants deliver themselves.

Most of this area is terrace, semi and converted block, and those share more than people realise - cavities, roof spaces, drainage. ants use all of it.
Mostly terrace and semi. We look at the party wall, the sub-floor and the roof space, because those are the routes between houses.
We do. A lot of our Strathfield work is rentals and strata, so the report, the products used and the areas treated are all recorded in writing for whoever needs them.
Yes, applied correctly. Products are registered for this use, placed out of reach rather than across open surfaces, and you will know what to stay off and for how long.
You do not normally need to leave. Anything requiring an empty room is short, and you will know about it before the work starts.
Between one and two hours covers the majority of jobs. We do not book so tightly that a technician has to cut a job short.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. So if they turn up again within the warranty, ring us and we will attend.
We do. Strathfield and Enfield, Burwood, Homebush and Homebush West are all on the same route, which helps if you own more than one property in the area.
