Budding splits the colony
Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.

Where Homebush sits, who covers it and what it costs.
If you are in Homebush or anywhere else in 2140, you are in our Inner West patch, 12.1 km west of the CBD. We run Homebush on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
The Homebush addresses we attend cluster around Bill Boyce Reserve and Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. Sydney Markets Plaza is another part of the suburb we are called to often.
Homebush is in the Inner West, Burwood, Strathfield and Canada Bay area, and we cover Homebush West, North Strathfield and Concord West on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your ant problem has come from next door. Most of the housing here shares a wall, a roof void or a sub-floor with something else, so we check what adjoins the property rather than treating it in isolation.
Most Homebush bookings come in as terraces and semis where the problem has come through a shared wall. Say which one applies when you call 1300 313 373 and the technician will have the right products on the van.
Beyond that we are regularly around Concord Golf Club, and out as far as North Strathfield station. If you are anywhere in 2140, you are inside the area we run.
The 2140 run is set the day before and you are given an arrival time. Where Homebush West and North Strathfield fall on the same round, we can usually bring the visit forward.
Ants in timber are a symptom. They do not create the damp, they move into timber the damp has already softened, so the leak matters more than the ants.
In a dry spell ants move indoors looking for moisture, which is why a spotless Homebush kitchen still gets trails in January. The sink, the pet bowl and the shower recess are the attractions.
The reason the trail returns to the same spot in a Homebush kitchen is that it is marked chemically. Wiping it buys hours. Treating the colony that maintains it is the only thing that ends it.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

The small glossy black one you find in the kitchen. It runs along skirtings, window frames and cabling, nesting in wall cavities, roof voids and the edges of garden beds, and it takes sweet bait without much persuading.

Very small brown ants, with soldiers that have noticeably bigger heads. You spot them by the fine sandy soil pushed up through paving joints, slab edges and grout. The colonies are big and multi-nested, so oil-based granular bait is the tool.

Small and flat brown in colour, running in dense fast trails. Because nests hold many queens and join with those next door, the infestation is usually bigger than one property. Never spray a repellent on it.

Large ants, often active at night, that nest in soil, hollow trees and softened or damp timber. Unlike the notorious overseas species they are rarely a structural pest, but a nest in a wall often points to a leak worth fixing.

An Elite job photo showing a nest in masonry. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead into the wall cavity - the spot black house ants most often choose.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail coming in from the external wall normally means a nest in the cavity or at the garden edge, and that entry point is where the tracing begins.
Fine soil pushed up along paving, driveways and slab joints is the classic sign of coastal brown ants nesting underneath.
Electrical fittings and switches stay warm, which is why ants nest in them. Do not spray into them; let us know and we will handle it properly.
Winged ants swarming in the warmer months are reproductives on a mating flight. Indoors, that can indicate an established colony within the structure.
Bathroom trails around the shower, basin or toilet normally mean water: damp in the wall cavity, or a slow leak supplying the colony.
Bull and jumper ants live in lawn and garden-bed nests. The sting hurts, and for some people it brings on a serious allergic reaction.

Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.
Retail sprays repel: the ants know they are there and go round. Professional non-repellents do not register, so the foragers deliver the active to the colony for us.
A colony's appetite shifts between sugar and protein with the brood cycle. Bait only works when it matches, which is why we test preferences on site.
It takes days for bait to move through a colony. Spraying the trail the day after our visit kills the very ants delivering it - our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
First the species, then the trails - followed back to where they enter and to nests in the wall, under paving, at garden edges or in the roof space.
A test with small amounts of each bait type - sweet, protein, oil-based - tells us what the colony wants at this point in its cycle.
Gel is placed on the trails themselves - along window frames and skirting boards - and positioned out of reach of children and pets.
Outside, a non-repellent goes around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths, so ants coming in pick it up on the way.
For nests beneath pavers and in lawn edges - typically coastal brown ants - we use granular bait or treat the nest directly.
You receive the job summary in writing, guidance on what to leave alone, and 6 months of warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Honeydew and sugary liquids, switching to protein when there is brood | Sweet gel on active trails and a non-repellent perimeter at frames and weep holes | Washing the trail down each day, which only relocates the foraging route |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oil | Oil-based granular bait applied to paving and lawn edges | Pouring insecticide into one pile and assuming that was the colony |
| Argentine ant | Mainly sugars, protein at some points in the cycle | Slow-acting bait with a non-repellent treatment right across the boundary | Spraying a repellent barrier, which causes a multi-queen nest to bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects, outdoors | Treating the nest directly where it sits in lawn or garden bed | Digging the nest out by hand, which is how people get stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Activity resumes and brood rearing starts, so the colony wants protein | Trails appearing indoors again, and fresh sand piles in the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging peaks, and warm humid spells trigger mating flights | Swarms of winged ants, and heavy trails following storms or heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies peak in size and stock up for the cooler months | Trails into the pantry and around pet bowls |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Little happening outdoors, but a nest in a heated wall stays active | Activity around heaters, the hot water unit and kitchen areas |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
The Inner West pattern is a surge after the first warm fortnight, then steady pressure into March. A colony treated in September is a fraction of the job it is in January.
A single trail across a Homebush prep bench during an inspection is enough to cause a problem. The program is built to prevent that rather than react to it.
After sustained rain in Homebush we get a run of calls, and the cause is consistent: shallow nests waterlogged, the colony moved into a wall cavity or subfloor to dry out.
Trails are traced to the colony, not just sprayed where you saw them.
Sweet, protein or oil-based baits chosen for the ant and the season.
Sprays that scatter a colony are avoided entirely in favour of non-repellents the ants deliver themselves.
A general ant treatment carries 6 months of cover - if they return inside it, so do we.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. We quote on the property rather than the postcode, so a unit in Homebush and a large house are priced differently. The figure is fixed before any work starts. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. Homebush sits roughly 12.1 km west of the CBD, inside our Inner West run, so we book a time and keep to it.
Most of this area is terrace, semi and converted block, and those share more than people realise - cavities, roof spaces, drainage. ants use all of it.
Mostly terrace and semi. We look at the party wall, the sub-floor and the roof space, because those are the routes between houses.
We do. A lot of our Homebush work is rentals and strata, so the report, the products used and the areas treated are all recorded in writing for whoever needs them.
Yes. Everything we use is registered for the purpose and applied at label rates, and we place product where people and animals do not go. Tell us about pets, aquariums or anyone with a respiratory condition at booking.
Usually not. Most of the work is done with you in the house, and where a room does need to be clear it is for a short period we will tell you about on arrival.
For a standard Homebush home, one to two hours. We would rather tell you it will take longer up front than rush it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. A return visit inside that period does not cost you anything.
All of them. Homebush sits alongside Homebush West, North Strathfield, Concord West and Liberty Grove in our coverage, and they are serviced on the same schedule.
