Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

If you are in Heckenberg or anywhere else in 2168, you are in our South West Sydney patch, 29.9 km west of the CBD. We cover Heckenberg on scheduled runs through the South West Sydney, and we will give you a firm time rather than a window.
A lot of our Heckenberg jobs are in the streets around Elouera Bushland Reserve and Panorama Avenue Reserve, and we are out near Valley Plaza Shopping Centre regularly enough that the technician usually knows the access before they arrive.
Heckenberg is in the Liverpool, Fairfield and Cumberland area, and we cover Sadleir, Busby and Ashcroft on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your ant problem has come from next door. On a newer estate the houses are near-identical and tightly spaced, which means a problem in one tends to turn up in the ones either side.
The ant calls we take from Heckenberg are mostly estate houses with narrow side access and a shared fence line. If yours is one of them, mention it when you ring 1300 313 373 - it changes what the technician brings.
We also work the streets near Green Valley Village Shopping Centre and across toward Snowy Park - the whole of 2168 is covered.
When you book, we confirm the 2168 run the day before and give you an arrival time rather than a window. If we are already out at Sadleir or Busby that morning, we will usually offer you the earlier slot.
A colony's preference also shifts with the season. Spring brood-rearing wants protein; later in summer the same Heckenberg colony wants sugars.
Ants lay a pheromone trail that other workers follow, which is why the line is so precise and why it reappears in exactly the same place after you wipe it. Cleaning a Heckenberg kitchen removes the smell for a few hours, not the colony that laid it.
A colony can occupy a garden bed, a paving slab and a wall cavity at once. That is why a single treated nest in Heckenberg changes very little on its own.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

The small glossy black one you find in the kitchen. It runs along skirtings, window frames and cabling, nesting in wall cavities, roof voids and the edges of garden beds, and it takes sweet bait without much persuading.

Tiny brown ants with a larger-headed soldier caste. The giveaway is loose sandy soil pushed up between pavers, along slab edges and in grout. Colonies are large with many nests, and oil-based granular baits work well.

Fast-moving, small and dull brown, in thick trails. Its nests are multi-queen and interconnected with neighbouring nests, so it spreads across properties - and repellent sprays accelerate exactly that.

Large ants that come out at night and nest in soil, hollow trees or damp timber. Unlike the overseas carpenter ants they seldom threaten structure - but a nest in a wall tells you there is moisture there.

From an Elite job - a nest coming out of a mortar joint. Cracked mortar and weep holes open directly into the wall cavity, and that cavity is where a lot of black house ant colonies sit.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
Ants arriving from the outside wall usually nest in the cavity or garden edge. The entry point is where we start tracing.
Fine sand pushed up through paving, driveway and slab joints is coastal brown ants underneath, almost without exception.
A nest in a power point or appliance is about warmth. Spraying into electrical fittings is dangerous - tell us and we will treat it the right way.
Swarms of winged ants in spring and summer are mating flights. Seen indoors, they can mean a mature colony inside the building.
Bathroom trails around the shower, basin or toilet normally mean water: damp in the wall cavity, or a slow leak supplying the colony.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in lawns and garden beds. Their stings hurt and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.
Retail sprays repel: the ants know they are there and go round. Professional non-repellents do not register, so the foragers deliver the active to the colony for us.
Bait is only taken if it matches what the colony wants right now. Their preference moves between sugar and protein as the brood changes, so we test and switch baits accordingly.
Bait takes days to work through a colony. If you spray the trail the day after we leave, you kill the couriers. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We identify the ant and follow trails back to entry points and nests in walls, paving, garden edges and roof spaces.
Before committing, we offer a little of each bait type and let the colony tell us which one it is on.
Indoor placements are gel on the trail - skirting, window frames, travel routes - sited away from children and pets.
A non-repellent treatment around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths intercepts ants coming in.
Under-paver and lawn-edge nests are handled with granular bait, or treated directly where that is better.
Written summary, instructions on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty covering the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Honeydew and sugary liquids, switching to protein when there is brood | Sweet gel on active trails and a non-repellent perimeter at frames and weep holes | Washing the trail down each day, which only relocates the foraging route |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein rather than sugars | Granular bait with an oil base, spread on paving and at the lawn edge | Boiling water down one hole - there are dozens of other nests |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects, outdoors | Treating the nest directly where it sits in lawn or garden bed | Digging the nest out by hand, which is how people get stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies come out of winter and begin raising brood, which pushes protein demand up | The first indoor trails of the season, and sand reappearing between pavers |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging peaks, and warm humid spells trigger mating flights | Swarms of winged ants, and heavy trails following storms or heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Quiet outside, but colonies in warm wall cavities keep working | Ants around the heater, the hot water unit and the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Mulch against the wall, a shrub touching the eaves and a damp garden bed along the footings all put ants within reach of the building. In Heckenberg we routinely find the colony is in the garden, not the house.
Brick cavities are dry, warm and undisturbed, which makes them ideal nesting. The weep hole is the doorway and it is usually where we start on a Heckenberg job.
Nests under paving are sheltered, warm and almost impossible to flood out. They need bait placed at the active entrances, not a hose.
Trails lead somewhere, so we follow them to the colony instead of spraying the sighting.
Which bait we use depends on the ant and the season: sweet, protein or oil-based.
Non-repellent products that foragers carry home, instead of sprays that scatter the colony.
General treatments come with 6 months. Ants back within that window means we come back too.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. The fixed price depends on the size of the property and how far the problem has spread, and we confirm it before we start - there is no call-out fee in Heckenberg 2168. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
We cover it on scheduled runs, so a day's notice gets you the best slot. Heckenberg sits roughly 29.9 km west of the CBD, inside our South West Sydney run, so we book a time and keep to it.
Estate housing is tightly spaced and near-identical, which means the conditions that suit ants at one address usually suit the whole street.
Modern detached homes close together. We treat the perimeter and the boundary because that is the route between properties.
We do all of those. A good share of the Heckenberg jobs we run are tenanted or strata properties, so the written record comes as standard.
It is, applied properly. We put product into cracks, voids and stations rather than across open surfaces, and we will tell you what to stay off and for how long before we leave.
Normally you can stay. Some treatments mean keeping out of a particular room briefly, and we will flag that when we arrive so you can plan around it.
Allow an hour to two hours for most properties. A bigger building, or one where the problem has spread, takes longer - and we would rather tell you that when quoting than rush it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. So if they turn up again within the warranty, ring us and we will attend.
Yes - we work right across the Liverpool, Fairfield and Cumberland area, which takes in Heckenberg and the suburbs around it.
