Budding splits the colony
Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.

What we cover in Jamisontown, and how quickly we can get there.
Jamisontown sits about 50.8 km west of the CBD in the Penrith & the Outer West, and postcode 2750 is one we are in most weeks. We travel out to Jamisontown on planned runs through the Penrith & the Outer West, so booking a day ahead gets you the best slot.
Our Jamisontown work takes in the streets by Huntington Reserve and Penrith Homemaker Centre, through to Gibbes Street Reserve at the other end.
Penrith City and Hawkesbury is the council area for Jamisontown, and we treat Regentville, Penrith and Glenmore Park on the same schedule. On larger blocks the outbuildings, sheds and woodpiles are usually where the problem is sitting, so they are part of the inspection.
Jamisontown jobs tend to be larger blocks where the shed or the woodpile turns out to be the source. Let us know which when you ring and we will plan the visit around it.
The whole of 2750 is on our regular run.
You get a confirmed time, not a window. We plan the 2750 run the day before, and if Regentville or Penrith is on the same round there is often an earlier slot going.
A colony's preference also shifts with the season. Spring brood-rearing wants protein; later in summer the same Jamisontown colony wants sugars.
In a dry spell ants move indoors looking for moisture, which is why a spotless Jamisontown kitchen still gets trails in January. The sink, the pet bowl and the shower recess are the attractions.
Many ants get most of their sugar from honeydew - the secretion of aphids and scale insects they actively protect on garden plants. A Jamisontown garden with a scale problem is feeding the ant colony that then comes indoors.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

The small glossy black one you find in the kitchen. It runs along skirtings, window frames and cabling, nesting in wall cavities, roof voids and the edges of garden beds, and it takes sweet bait without much persuading.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

Small, dull brown and fast-moving in thick trails. Nests hold many queens and connect with neighbouring nests, so infestations can stretch across several properties. Repellent sprays are especially counter-productive with this species.

These are the large night-active ants that nest in soil, hollow trees and timber that has softened with damp. Structural damage is uncommon in Australia, but a wall nest points to a leak worth chasing.

Taken on an Elite job: a mortar joint with a nest behind it. Weep holes and failed mortar are a direct path into the cavity, where many black house ant colonies establish.

An Elite photo of gel bait on an active trail. The whole point is letting them feed and take it home, so the trail must be left alone once we have treated it.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail coming in from the external wall normally means a nest in the cavity or at the garden edge, and that entry point is where the tracing begins.
Fine sand pushed up through paving, driveway and slab joints is coastal brown ants underneath, almost without exception.
Ants nesting in switches and electrical fittings are drawn to the warmth. Do not spray into power points; tell us so we can treat safely.
Those spring and summer swarms of winged ants are mating flights. If they are coming out inside the house, there may be a mature colony in the building.
Trails around the shower, vanity or toilet often mean moisture in the wall or a colony drinking from a slow leak.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in lawns and garden beds. Their stings hurt and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.
Supermarket sprays are repellent: ants detect them and walk around them. Professional non-repellent products are not detected, so foragers walk through, pick up the active and carry it back to nest mates.
A colony only takes bait if it wants that food at that moment. Ants switch between sugar and protein as their brood needs change, so we test preferences and change baits when needed.
It takes days for bait to move through a colony. Spraying the trail the day after our visit kills the very ants delivering it - our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Identification comes first. Then we trace the trails to the entry points and the nests themselves, whether those are in walls, paving, garden edges or the roof.
Sweet, protein and oil-based baits are offered in small amounts so the colony shows us its current preference.
Inside, gel bait follows the trails: window frames, skirting, the routes they already use, always placed where children and pets cannot get to it.
Outside, a non-repellent goes around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths, so ants coming in pick it up on the way.
For nests beneath pavers and in lawn edges - typically coastal brown ants - we use granular bait or treat the nest directly.
Written summary, instructions on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty covering the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Honeydew and sugary liquids, switching to protein when there is brood | Sweet gel on active trails and a non-repellent perimeter at frames and weep holes | Washing the trail down each day, which only relocates the foraging route |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oily foods | Oil-based granular bait over paving and lawn margins | Attacking a single visible nest while the rest of the colony's nests carry on |
| Argentine ant | Mainly sugars, protein at some points in the cycle | Slow-acting bait with a non-repellent treatment right across the boundary | Spraying a repellent barrier, which causes a multi-queen nest to bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, active after dark | Night trail inspection, baiting near the nest, and dealing with damp timber | Inspecting in daylight when the colony is not foraging |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Outdoor feeders on insects and nectar | Direct treatment of the nest in the lawn or garden bed | Opening the nest up by hand and being stung for it |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies come out of winter and begin raising brood, which pushes protein demand up | The first indoor trails of the season, and sand reappearing between pavers |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | The busiest foraging period, with mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants on the wing, and thick trails after a storm or a hot spell |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies reach full size and start stocking up ahead of the cold | Trails heading for the pantry and the pet food bowl |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor foraging slows right down while nests in heated walls continue | Ants showing up by heaters, hot water services and in kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Food premises need bait placement that will not contaminate, and records of what was used where. That is a different job from a domestic callout.
Anywhere in 2750, or over toward Regentville, is inside the area we treat at the same price.
The Penrith & the Outer West pattern is a surge after the first warm fortnight, then steady pressure into March. A colony treated in September is a fraction of the job it is in January.
Finding the nest is the job - following the trail to it, not treating the visible end of it.
Which bait we use depends on the ant and the season: sweet, protein or oil-based.
Non-repellent products that foragers carry home, instead of sprays that scatter the colony.
General ant treatments are covered. If ants come back within 6 months, so do we.
