Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

Where South Penrith sits, who covers it and what it costs.
We treat ants right across 2750. South Penrith is roughly 48.2 km west of the city, which puts it well inside the Penrith & the Outer West run our technicians work. We travel out to South Penrith on planned runs through the Penrith & the Outer West, so booking a day ahead gets you the best slot.
Most weeks we are somewhere between Jim Scott Reserve and Southlands Shopping Centre in South Penrith, and Penrith Golf Club is close enough to be on the same run.
Penrith City and Hawkesbury is the council area for South Penrith, and we treat Penrith, Jamisontown and Glenmore Park on the same schedule. On larger blocks the outbuildings, sheds and woodpiles are usually where the problem is sitting, so they are part of the inspection.
Most South Penrith bookings come in as larger blocks where the shed or the woodpile turns out to be the source. Say which one applies when you call 1300 313 373 and the technician will have the right products on the van.
Every part of 2750 is covered as standard.
We confirm your slot the day before and arrive at a stated time. Penrith and Jamisontown sit on the same run, so earlier appointments in 2750 come up regularly.
Several of the species we treat around South Penrith are polydomous - one colony spread across many nests. Treating the nest you found leaves the rest of it working, which is why we look for the extent before we choose a product.
A colony's preference also shifts with the season. Spring brood-rearing wants protein; later in summer the same South Penrith colony wants sugars.
Ants lay a pheromone trail that other workers follow, which is why the line is so precise and why it reappears in exactly the same place after you wipe it. Cleaning a South Penrith kitchen removes the smell for a few hours, not the colony that laid it.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small, shiny and black, and one of the most common kitchen ants in Sydney. It trails along skirting boards, window frames and power cables, and nests in wall voids, roof spaces and garden edges. It readily takes sweet baits.

Minute brown ants with larger-headed soldiers among them. Fine sand in paving joints, at slab edges and in grout is the tell. Because a colony holds many nests, oil-based granular baits are the right approach.

Small and flat brown in colour, running in dense fast trails. Because nests hold many queens and join with those next door, the infestation is usually bigger than one property. Never spray a repellent on it.

Large ants that come out at night and nest in soil, hollow trees or damp timber. Unlike the overseas carpenter ants they seldom threaten structure - but a nest in a wall tells you there is moisture there.

Taken on an Elite job: a mortar joint with a nest behind it. Weep holes and failed mortar are a direct path into the cavity, where many black house ant colonies establish.

Photo from an Elite job: gel bait placed along an active trail. The ants are left to feed and carry the bait home, so we ask customers not to wipe or spray the trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
Loose fine soil along paving, driveway joints and the slab edge means coastal brown ants have nested underneath.
They go into switches and appliances for the warmth. Keep insecticide out of power points and tell us, so it can be treated safely.
Mating flights produce the winged swarms you see in spring and summer. Finding them indoors suggests a mature colony inside rather than outside.
Trails in the bathroom point to water in the wall or a slow leak the ants have found.
These are the bull ants and jumper ants nesting in lawns and beds - a painful sting, and a risk of serious allergic reaction for some.
A licensed Sydney technician will talk it through and give you a fixed quote within half an hour.

Supermarket sprays are repellent: ants detect them and walk around them. Professional non-repellent products are not detected, so foragers walk through, pick up the active and carry it back to nest mates.
If the bait is not what they want today, they will walk past it. Preference moves between sugar and protein with brood demand, so we test and change as needed.
A bait program works over days. The worst thing you can do is spray the trail once we have gone - those ants are the delivery system. See our blog on budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Species confirmed, then trails traced to entry points and to the nests - walls, paving, garden edges, roof space.
We put out small quantities of sweet, protein and oil-based bait to see which the colony is actually taking today.
Indoor placements are gel on the trail - skirting, window frames, travel routes - sited away from children and pets.
A non-repellent band around the footings, weep holes, door frames and paths catches ants as they come in.
Coastal brown ant nests under paving and along lawn edges get granular bait or direct treatment.
The job ends with a written summary, advice on what to avoid spraying, and a 6-month warranty.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugary liquids and honeydew, plus protein when raising brood | Sweet gel bait on trails, non-repellent perimeter at weep holes and frames | Wiping trails with detergent daily, which keeps the colony foraging elsewhere |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oily foods | Oil-based granular bait over paving and lawn margins | Attacking a single visible nest while the rest of the colony's nests carry on |
| Argentine ant | Mainly sugars, protein at some points in the cycle | Slow-acting bait with a non-repellent treatment right across the boundary | Spraying a repellent barrier, which causes a multi-queen nest to bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, foraging after dark | Inspecting trails at night, baiting close to the nest, and fixing damp timber | Working only in daylight hours, when these ants are not out |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects, outdoors | Treating the nest directly where it sits in lawn or garden bed | Digging the nest out by hand, which is how people get stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak activity, with swarming flights triggered by warm humid conditions | Flying ants, and trails that thicken noticeably after storms and heat |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | The colony is at its largest and laying in stores before winter | Trails running into pantries and to pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor activity slows, but nests in heated walls keep going | Ants around heaters, hot water units and kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
If your South Penrith paving keeps developing little sand volcanoes, sweeping them away is treating the spoil rather than the nest. The colony is in the bedding sand under the slab.
We are around Southlands Shopping Centre most weeks and cover every street in 2750, including the ones off the main roads.
Food premises need bait placement that will not contaminate, and records of what was used where. That is a different job from a domestic callout.
Trails lead somewhere, so we follow them to the colony instead of spraying the sighting.
The bait is chosen for the species and the time of year - sweet, protein or oil-based.
Nothing repellent, because that causes budding. Non-repellent products get carried home instead.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. We quote on the property rather than the postcode, so a unit in South Penrith and a large house are priced differently. The figure is fixed before any work starts. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
We cover it on scheduled runs, so a day's notice gets you the best slot. South Penrith sits roughly 48.2 km west of the CBD, inside our Penrith & the Outer West run, so we book a time and keep to it.
Out here the problem is normally outside the building. We inspect the outbuildings and the stored timber because that is where ants are actually established.
Larger blocks with outbuildings, so sheds, stables and stored timber are part of the inspection rather than an afterthought.
We do. A lot of our South Penrith work is rentals and strata, so the report, the products used and the areas treated are all recorded in writing for whoever needs them.
Yes, when it is applied properly. We use registered products at label rates and tell you which areas to keep clear and for how long. Mention pets, fish tanks or allergies when you book.
Usually not. Most of the work is done with you in the house, and where a room does need to be clear it is for a short period we will tell you about on arrival.
Between one and two hours covers the majority of jobs. We do not book so tightly that a technician has to cut a job short.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. A return visit within the warranty period costs you nothing.
We do. South Penrith and Penrith, Jamisontown, Glenmore Park and Regentville are all on the same route, which helps if you own more than one property in the area.
